So m

So much for his family being in the Netherlands and hence him being unsettled...
Tried to make a similar point to a forum rent-an-opinion t'other month, even my claim that I knew a member of staff at his childs school who chats to him at drop off / pick up was met with a response of "If you say so"😄
Well - that were me told so I backed out gracefully.!

If we can keep him that would be brilliant. If his comment at the awards re 'the table over there' is accurate then it seems he wants to stay but on wages he could get elsewhere. I wouldn't be against that (ie get rid of Matos and give his wages to Hamers ) However id have a weight and discipline clause in there to make sure hes fit and available on his higher wages !!

Bit skeptical of this story .

Lets be honest we dont want to look too desperate to cash in on him so putting the story out that we might keep him could be warning that we're not giving him away .

All part of the transfer window pantomime.

I wouldn't be averse to keeping him around for at least another season, certainly at Championship level where we'll see plenty of the ball and he's undoubtedly, from a ball mastery point of view, extremely talented and is one of not many in the current squad who can pull a rabbit out of a hat when we need it.

On the rare chance we went up, he'd need to go to a pre-season boot camp to play in the Prem to any sort of great effect because he's not someone to carry when we're chasing shadows against Man City or Arsenal.

Wilder needs to stop being so stubborn and just go back to the 3-5-2.

The full backs we already have here would make much better wing backs and I think Gus would be brilliant in the "Duffy role"
If he does sign a new contract then we should be building a team around him to accommodate for the lack of defensive output / input how ever you want to look st that.

Move him inside give him a free role as mentioned and make sure he gets on ball in final 3rd. Let him float about, somewhere that it doesn't hurt us with his lack defensive duty.

Far too often we have been attacked overloaded and conceded down that left hand side.

Could even go to a 4321 without the freerole with hamer and ohare behind bamford as 2 no10s both popping up in pockets of space, this should allow space on outside for burrows and Seriki to bomb down wing.

Would love to see Gus stay and be given a role in the starting eleven that doesn't involve defending or pressing. Somehow, let him have a free role between the striker(s) and midfield.
Not sure why we've not just played him as a second striker/just off the front man. We did it with O'Hare quite a bit last year so no idea why we haven't with Hamer

Been saying this since O’Hare had that great spell playing on the left when Hamer was injured/suspended in Nov. Just let him press the back line and not leave a massive gap on our left.

There was a shed load of emotion in that moment with the fans at the weekend.

I'm a firm believer in striking whilst the iron is hot. Cov will circle, Leeds will circle and if the papers are to be believed, West Ham will circle.

If he's giving a come and keep me please, get in there Yoonited.

They would be my preferred options of lineup/system too, although I think when I suggested the latter recently, it was shot down - and I can remember why...

Might not even be dependant on what Gus wants, we may actually just want to cash in on him.

This reads as its come from Hamers agent and basically says "pay me and I'll stay"

This is some great face saving from both camps. Hamer makes the right noises that he wants to stay, United can appear to be keen to keep him in order to drive up the fee. Everyone wins when he moves on for ~£8m in the summer.

Aside 1: Hamer only had 12 months left on his Coventry deal when we signed him for £11.5m yet there's a lot of noise about how him only having 12 months left now makes him somehow only worth £3m

Aside 2: if we don't sell him we'll have to raise £10m from somewhere else (fee + saved wages)

Aside 3: any new contract would need to be at top end Championship wages - £40k plus. We're not offering that to anyone this summer.

Is Aside 2 factoring in the sale of Peck?

Yes. We need to bridge an income gap of around £30m. Some of that will come through wage savings (~£5m on the three released so far), some through Hamer (probably) but that probably only covers half of what's needed. Peck will fill the rest and Wilder will say that he's the one most easily replaced within the current squad.

So 5mil on wages. 13-15 for Peck means we need 10mil more. If the choice is keep Hamer and sell a Brooks or Seriki, or sell Hamer - I'm leaning towards moving one of them two on (as much as I'm a fan).

Is this also factoring in however much the buy option was for Zatterstrom?

No - NZ has played 1 minute for Genoa since moving so the chance of them taking up a €5.5m option (as reported by Fabrizio Romano) is minimal. That would give us around a €3m (£2.5m) profit, FWIW.

if we sign riedewald and phillips we could give the number 10 role to hamer for me with his talent hes not involved enough stuck out on the left with those 2 behind him in midfield and hamer further forward centrally we would create far more chances i do think wilder will go back to 3 centre backs and wing backs in a 3412 system with a physical striker like simms at coventry alongside bamford up top

3-5-2 is fine. But wing backs need to be physically able and have a .motor on them to defend. Burrows is certainly not that

Mate, don't come and piss on my chips here, allow me some giddiness!

Correct. The Wilder/Knill innovation wasn't only something brand new, it was awesome to watch and was very successful from L1 to the EPL.
Then came the shitshow Covid season and all of a sudden it was Wilder's tactics that had been found out and this brilliant formation and new style of football that got the better of a lot of EPL teams was now defunct.
Wilder 2:0 seemed to agree and went a different route, first season back we were effective but dull to watch and although close to a Play off win we achieved nothing. He's tinkered with the old system at times as Wilder 3:0, even recently but it's like he's a former champion that no longer believes in his winning strategy.
I say recruit to go again, we didn't have the cash back when this brilliant innovation started back in L1, likely we won't have much money to recruit for next season.
One real positive for Wilder is he's spent buttons much better than gold over his career so don't abandon the best footballing system I have witnessed in over 40 years of watching the Blades. Get the players that fit the system (like JOC/Baldock/Bash/Duffy/Fleck/Norwood etc) all inexpensive but could play in this system (they are out there).
With smart business this summer we can do what we did back then to devastating effect, playing a brand of football that at times was unplayable.

Normally I’d agree id like to think we could have a far fitter squad next season but Gus is built more rotund I wouldn’t want to change him for the sake but yes he does need more fitter.

Hopefully not a similar scenario to Illy the other season…
On and off till we sell him with a week before the season starts
