Not been the best season, but is he still a ledge for what he did back in his first spell?

Or is this season and his "Mardiola" reputation sullying things?

I'm obviously pro-Wilder and think we would have made the playoffs if we stuck with him and not appointed Selles. But that isn't the most popular tek on here now.

He will always be a legend in my eyes.

Ball boy to Ball-ding coach, Its the story most football fans dream of having in their club.

Legend in my eyes. I think its a double edge sword, as most managers potentially have more scope to care about themselves more than the club, Wilder has his colours nailed solidly to our mast, which then makes it hard to separate the fan from the manager.

I'd liken him to Bassett, in that he took a team with little talent and poor morale, that was floundering in the third tier (Bassett started in 2nd but only really had chance to make significant changes in his first pre-season), spent very little money on a team of, generally, journeymen and misfits, and guided them to the Premier League in 3 seasons. Not only that he, along with the coaching staff, revolutionised the way we played and transformed nothing players, like Basham, into key players at the heartbeat of the team. We not only got to the Premier League, we finished a very respectable 9th in our first season and I'm convinced if it hadn't been for Covid, we'd have qualified for Europe and wouldn't have been relegated the following season. I genuinely think that some fans forget what an achievement that was.

For that he should always be regarded as a legend, regardless of what happens.

Who cares? He's the manager of a football club, currently in his third tenure and it just happens to be the club he supports. When did it start to be more about who's the manager than it did about the players and the results? What's a Wilder Fan versus another who wants to gerrim aht? You should be Blades fans ffs.

Fuck me, all teams win games and lose games but some of your lots obsession with the manager is like listening to the Pitsmoor Pig banging on about the grunters. Have a fucking break in the summer, you might even get to sleep at night.

To be fair this forum is going to be full of "you can tell it's the close season" comments.

Gave me the best 2/3 seasons as a blade.

Stars aligned for me and the lads. Old enough to be earning decent money but before kids etc so had a few years travelling home and away. Overnighting away trips getting pissed and signing our heads off. Stuff like the MK Dons away trip with the half time flairs will stay with me forever.

I’ve got a signed shirt in my study from that season.

He’s a legend for me, but not someone I want managing the club in the here and now.

What makes you think that? Yes you can blame the summer recruitment disaster but most of those players have been moved on or are unused. The Selles excuse was exhausted a long time ago, Wilder has worked with this squad, the vast majority of which have been his signings and we have largely been woeful.

He's been in charge for 40 games, won 17, drawn 6, lost 17. We've lost more points from a winning position than any other team in the division, all under Wilders watch. And that's even before talking about the bizarre team selections, (Bristol City away and Blackburn at home recently were baffling) substitutions, complete lack of ability to defend set-pieces......

its been a shit, boring, uninspiring season and I'm glad it's over. I'm resigned to the fact that Wilder will be in charge come August but I don't think he should be.

Wilder will always be a legend
Doesn't mean he isnt past it
He deserves another crack next season but after that, no excuses
Look at someone like mourinho. He hasnt had an A list managerial gig for years and hes still a legend. Yeah I know thats a different level to us but the point stands. Just because someone isnt quite what they used to be doesnt stop them being a legend

Another poll.

Wilder took a club from bottom of league 1 to 6th place in the Premier league genuinely battling for a champions league spot using many of the lower league players.

That feat is remarkable and I would say impossible ….its probably the best feat in English football since Brian Clough
took Nottingham Forest from div 2 to winning div 1….then winning the European Cup (that rise also seems impossible).

So just based on those 4 years Wilder became a legend
And if people have sincerity then once a legend always a legend.

However that doesn’t mean he can’t be criticised and/ or sacked
But like Warnock and Bassett (and even Hecky), he’ll always be welcome back at the club.
Wilder gave me some of my best times supporting United in 50 years….so I’ll always be grateful.

The good old Covid ollocks rears its head again

That first four season periods built up a momentum that I have never seen before or since. It was halted by the Covid shutdown and once it was lost the magic seemed to go. So for me - wilder pre lockdown was immense; I genuinely feared he might end up losing him to be the next England manager at this point. However, if we had only had Wilder in his post - lockdown incarnations I don’t think we would be saying legend. It really is a career of two halves with us it the first period surely confirms him as a legend (albeit one whose best days with us are most probably behind us).

He will always be a legend for that first 4 and a half seasons. The best football i've witnessed us play and we took the Prem on. He's still a legend, forget it being only for the first few years...that's a bit irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

He has most definitely earned the label of legend.

Tarnished somewhat as we stand, it’s a shame that things have divided the support.

But a legend nonetheless

Of course he is.

Saying no would be like saying Deano wasn't as good the 2nd and 3rd go around so he's not a legend for the first spell. I'll fight anyone who says that btw

Tainted his legacy and I was a big fan of his. Wilder could do with taking stock and looking back at what actually made him great in 2016. He is making errors that previously he never would do.

His worst trait is taking digs at the "punters" rather than accepting that maybe he may have actually got it wrong after a loss.

Scruffy looking tramp and one could have sat on his bottom lip when he sulked his way out the first time. He's a parody of himself now.

In my lifetime he’s a legend for what he did in 3 seasons the first time round. Not sure what’s happened to him since then just gone a completely different manager.
