I think you probably get your info from our esteemed Foxy?![]()
Good point Mr Pinchy, maybe Linz and Foxy would consider a version of the T-shirt with Velcro on heads so we can buy one shirt and purchase additional heads. We could also have serval beard types to Velcro onto the faces of various players to match their current face furnature. And make me sell my T-Shirt??? I should Cocoa!
Was on about that guy from Luton last season , but can't find fault with any of them names Mr B .Signings like Billy Sharp are part of the reason why we are where we are. We don't need to be signing expensive players with little or no potential to improve.
What we need to be looking for - and what I have no doubt that the scouting department has been tasked to find - are young players with the potential to improve. Andre Gray (Luton), Cody McDonald (Gillingham), Kieran Agard (Rotherham), Chuks Aneke (Arsenal, out of contract), Sam Winnall (Scunthorpe) and Scott Hogan (Rochdale) would be on my list.
If Connor Sammon is at the top of Mr Clough list I'd be surprised , stocking of shite springs to mind , and I would have seen him a lot more on the International stage " playing " for Ireland . Then some of you gentlemen .This striker thing is a bit unpredictable isn't it? Not long ago we'd all have been salivating at the thought of Paddy Madden, Stuart Beavon or Billy Clarke. Not now I suspect.
The usual mark of a prolific striker is a 1 in 2 goal ratio, maybe adjusted to 2 in 5 these days. That's why I was intrigued to see someone suggest Cody McDonald. I've never really seen or thought of him but look at his established scoring record. Also in that region are Callum Wilson, Billy Sharp and (just about) Sam Baldock and Ched. It's not a precise science and you have to take the level of football into account of course.
Oh, and then we need a bigger more physical specimen who can weigh in with a few goals as well. I'd have thought Conor Sammon might be towards the top of Nigel's list for that role?

Connor Sammon , shakes head in bewilderment .
David Moyes is rumoured to be coming in as NC's assistant, he's bringing Rooney and Felaini with him, will that do?![]()

No problem with Sammon , just think we should be aiming for someone who's not just a younger version of Mr Porter , mostly played as a sub for Ireland over the last few years , hoof it up , knock it down ,You have your opinion of course, mate, but both Martinez and Clough have paid decent money for him.
Those are two excellent references so far as I'm concerned!
Nah That Fellaini is rubbish and Rooney would only be a bench warmer![]()
Darius Henderson anyone?
I have heard from an impeccable source that Billy was incredibly frustrated by Blackwell's reluctance to play to feet during his time with us the second time around.
Apparently there were a number of times he challenged him, stating that if he had service into feet from the wings instead of chasing balls pumped long, they'd get more out of him, but Blackwell was so pigheaded he continued to totally ignore him, preferring hoofing it up to Henderson, who'd end up giving away a free kick, and probably getting a yellow card in the process.
Watch a number of videos from the time Sharp was in red-hot form, and you'll note that he's getting great service from both wings into the box, turning the defender quickly or beating him to the first ball to nip in and score. With some of the players we have now, I could imagine him quite easily picking up at least 10 should he wish to come in. A season long loan wouldn't do him any harm in a successful side, surely - particularly if Southampton want to contribute to his upkeep ?
Yes please.
Got so much more stick than he deserved when he was here. Would be an unbelievable signing at this level.[/QUOT
Darius Henderson anyone?
I can't think of any other player who would fit into our current style of play less than Henderson. I'm sorry but picturing Hendo in the current squad is missing the point somewhat.
I'm not sure how much Clough is committed to the 4-5-1, whether it evolved due to the players he had at his disposal, or whether it is his chosen method of playing. If it is his first choice system then we may assume his summer signings will fit into the system. Personally I have thoroughly enjoyed the style of play over these past few moths; one up front, attacking wingers, surging midfield, all playing "proper football" and getting numbers in the opposition box by the time the ball gets there; all this achieved whilst at the same time being rock solid as a defensive unit ( apart from Wembley!). To be successful playing a style of football which will serve us well in the Championship is truly building in the right way and the type and quality of player we are attracting will be well capable of challenging at the higher level. I have always believed you have to go up with a strong squad and established team ethos rather than just sneak up playing rag bag football and needing to strengthen drastically and I think Clough can do that, hopefully next season.
Right, having said all that, that was my mentality when I suggested "Billy Sharp -Why Not?" in the OP. Whatever you may think of the lad, he has skills and game awareness, is a provider as James Beattie will testify, and a goalscorer. He lacks height and pace, but so does Baxter and Clough has been delighted with him on his own up front, far more pleased with him than many fans. Thing is the role does not need height and pace, the lone forward is a target man who comes short to meet the man in possession, holds it or plays it first time if a teammate makes a run. Baxter is very good at that, Sharp would be excellent. Diego will be able to do it as back up to begin with. Baxter could play very well with Scougall in forward midfield, an exciting combination the more they play together. Baxter's main quality, as I see it, is an awareness of colleagues making runs and an ability to play defence splitting through balls. If we sign Ched in my opinion he would have to drastically improve his team play, game awareness and workrate to play as lone striker as described above.
So, why would Clough even think about signing such as Darrius Henderson? I can see the case for signing a striker or strikers who can do the above job and have pace or height as well, that would be perfect. Thing about Billy Sharp is that he would guarantee 20 goals plus next season and maybe 10 assists. How many other players within our reach would you get that return from? Is he within our reach? Of course he is, he's a Blade through and through.
I think historically Clough has favoured 4-4-2
My only problem with that post is that I dont believe Sharp would be guaranteed to get 20+

I was joking.
He is probably the last person we need right now.

Fair comment however I will agree with op.Given that Sharp's name has resurfaced elsewhere I thought I'd have a dig for this. I stand by what I said back in April, we don't need Billy Sharp: his cost outweighs his benefit.
Most of the players I mentioned have moved:
Andre Grey: signed for Brentford for £300k. We may have been able to compete but he got to stay in the south and gets Championship football
Chuks Aneke: turned down Leeds (among others) to sign for Zolte Weiregen in Belgium. Probably wouldn't have considered us.
Sam Winnall: signed for Barnsley for around £300k. Scunthorpe fans don't seem too fussed by his departure and his attitude has been questioned.
Scott Hogan: signed for Brentford for £750k. A lot of money for a player essentially unproven outside L2; if the price had been £250k I'd have liked to think we'd have been interested.
Leaving:
Kieran Agard: reportedly unsettled at Rotherham but since their promotion (which happened after I wrote the post) I doubt he'd drop back down
Cody McDonald: still think he'd be an excellent signing although he's older than I thought he was at 28.
Fair comment however I will agree with op.
Sharp is tailor made for our requirements and NC knows it.
Getting him ( wages / drop to L1 etc) is a different matter.
