Billy Sharp - Why Not?

Don't see why we can't sign him, if Clough wants him I'm sure we could offer a decent sum to Southampton who would likely want him off their wage bill.
If other championship clubs want him how come none have actually put in the bids for him, Donny are happy to have him on loan but not willing to actually take him for a fee.
If its realistic that we can get Brayford why not Sharp as well, on the Brayford note he, Harris and Coady have had no problems dropping the divisions to play for us, so wouldn't sharp being a blade.
I would like him back as I think he would do well up front in this leauge alongside a possible Evans partnership, we would have a solid front line for once which we have lacked in a while.
But its all up in the air at the moment, so who knows what will happen but it would be worth the shot and trying to get him back.

Things to consider mate -

1: Coady came here on loan due to Weir being able to use his contacts at Liverpool. This is not uncommon amongst some of the larger clubs who view it as a way to get game time under the belts of their young fringe players.

2: Brayford was wasting away at Cardiff. Clough did exactly the same as Weir, as in an already existing relationship with the player made it easier for Clough to persuade Brayford to come here on loan. I assume Cardiff continue to pay his Premier League scale wages, something that United would be hard pressed to compete with at the moment.

3: As for Billy, the sentiment that surrounds him, ie, the prodigal son, abandoned by his parent club, returned under a promise of making the difference, yet failed to deliver. Since then he's had a chance to prove his reputation at Southampton, didn't deliver there, yet his reputation continues.

I doubt Billy would be the answer to our goal famine, but that's not my shout. As for Coady, as with Sharp, whether we'll get him back here remains to be seen, and as for Brayford being a realistic option for us? Where has it been suggested he was a realistic option? Speculation and opinion shouldn't be confused with hard facts. I'd like to see both Brayford and Coady here for at least another season, but Clough will have so much wheeler dealing to attend to that it's impossible to know what he'll be able to secure in terms of players who can improve the squad.

Final point - wages! Is it realistic for a player on between £15-25K to accept a drop in income if he doesn't have to?

Fair enough, the fact is though he can almost certainly get more money from a second tier team. Call me cynical, but I suspect that will weigh more with him than the bigness of his Bladeness.
You are cynical: But in my view your honour you are right.

Come on SEB you can't drop that in and not explain your comment!

Only that the names I've heard would be regarded by most people on here as a better 'fit' for the remit of what we need up front. Doesn't mean we'd sign them as targets disappear, but IMO any one of these would be better for what Clough has said he wants up front than BS.

Wy Not? Cos we are still in the 3rd fuckin division that's why not.

Let's get realistic.

are you aware hes scored 16 goals in the last 3 years

dont let facts get in the way of a myth though
have you ever thought why hes had more clubs than Tiger Woods
Brandys scored more goals and I dont want him

hardly what we are looking for is it
From 2011-2014 involving Donny, Southampton, Forest, Reading and again Donny he has scored 37goals.
From 2012-2014 he has scored 18goals for Forest, Reading and Donny.
Brandy has 4goals this term whereas Sharp has 6.
Last time he was in league one he scored 56 goals for Scunthorpe in 2 seasons.

I'm half tempted to set up a template to automatically enter this, as I must have said it 100 times :)...

Billy Sharp did not/does not want to play in League One. He's had the opportunity to and not taken it.

As time goes on, I'm sure this requirement could become less important to him, but it's as simple as that.

In terms of signing him anyway, I think we'd be better looking elsewhere.

as for Brayford being a realistic option for us?
Just going on what he said recently about the club, if he's willing to join us he's a realistic option in my eyes, but yeah won't argue with any of your points, just trying to be optimistic about the future.
But I don't live in the real world you have to remember ;)

I get that mate, I'd love to see Brayford sign permanently for us so don't think I disagree with you about the guy. I happen to think there are a few hurdles that need to be negotiated before this could become a realistic option, wages being one of the biggest problems as well as whether Solskjaer decides to keep him. Seems he has 3 years left on his contract at Cardiff, so if his manager gives him the thumbs up we move on and sign someone else.

Pinchy, love affairs sometimes come to an end. I feel for you fella, your pain and distress would not go unnoticed, but I believe The Brayford Helpline may be operational if he leaves us, or I can offer the type of emotional therapy you're clearly destined to need......of course, let's hope I'm wrong and you can continue to wear your Brayford T-Shirt, pants and socks with pride.

Signings like Billy Sharp are part of the reason why we are where we are. We don't need to be signing expensive players with little or no potential to improve.

What we need to be looking for - and what I have no doubt that the scouting department has been tasked to find - are young players with the potential to improve. Andre Gray (Luton), Cody McDonald (Gillingham), Kieran Agard (Rotherham), Chuks Aneke (Arsenal, out of contract), Sam Winnall (Scunthorpe) and Scott Hogan (Rochdale) would be on my list.

I've publicly admitted my pogonophilia. I've taken the first steps to recovery, but I'll always be a pogonophile.

One day at a time....

Rubbish. ;)

Because Bladey Bladey Blade Blade Bladey Blade. Even if we were in the Hallam Sunday League he'd want to play for us, because he has played for us before. Every ex-Blade wants to return, even the dead ones. Get a voodoo chap to do the business and we could have the first team made up of zombies. We could even get him to doodoo his voodoo with fans, and I could bring my great-great-great grandad.

Billy's a good player and striker, but please can we stop these threads about former players returning. He had two go's at Bramall Lane and for one reason or another it didn't work out. Seems better suited to playing at Donny, I'm sure that if he could get a season long loan there the goals would flow again. I'm a big fan of Billy's but he's not the only option in the world, as others have pointed out on here, there are other perhaps more exciting prospects out there, besides our goal machines coming home soon anyway.

I think you probably get your info from our esteemed Foxy?;)

No mate, there's only one band for me.....

Forget the poncey academic title, you're a beard junkie pure and simple, and we all know where this leads, you'll be pitting beard against beard before we know it. Where once there was beard harmony, this will be replaced by hirsute chaos on a scale that is barely imaginable. Get a grip man, there's still time to reflect and contribute to society as we all, eventually, have to.

So you're saying it could all get a bit hairy?......

This striker thing is a bit unpredictable isn't it? Not long ago we'd all have been salivating at the thought of Paddy Madden, Stuart Beavon or Billy Clarke. Not now I suspect.

The usual mark of a prolific striker is a 1 in 2 goal ratio, maybe adjusted to 2 in 5 these days. That's why I was intrigued to see someone suggest Cody McDonald. I've never really seen or thought of him but look at his established scoring record. Also in that region are Callum Wilson, Billy Sharp and (just about) Sam Baldock and Ched. It's not a precise science and you have to take the level of football into account of course.

Oh, and then we need a bigger more physical specimen who can weigh in with a few goals as well. I'd have thought Conor Sammon might be towards the top of Nigel's list for that role?

Apart from writing all of the Star's headlines for them, he's just a Chris Porter with knobs on. A team player with few goals in him. Which is fine by me if we buy someone else to work off him and do the difficult bit….
