Upon reflection I’m beginning to think it’s just one of those things.
Very similar to Robbo getting a red against Newcastle.
Gets first to the ball, clears it fully then the opponent, who is miles late, gets clattered with the inevitable follow through.
Now it’s very hard to confirm intent by a player to follow through and harm their opposite number. But it’s also hard to advise what Phillips or Robbo are actually supposed to do. At the point they clear the ball they are the winner of the duel to get to the ball. Once you commit to putting your foot through the ball there is a certain inevitability about your foot continuing. Then you add to the fact the opponent comes in from the side not head on and it’s very difficult to avoid.
If that’s a red card due to the outcome as
Balham mentioned then on occasion each team is occasionally going to suffer.
All I know is that I’ve seen Lundstram win the ball, Robbo do it and now Phillips and they’ve all seen red. Conversely I don’t recall a single opposition player being pulled up for it!
