Following on from Darren's recollection of Bob Atkins wonder strike at Millmoor, here's another question.

Which are your top three goals (quality wise) but scored by players who you considered to be "not very good" (or shit if you prefer). Should cause some debate anyway just for the players that might get a mention.

1. Tony Field v Ipswich.
Can be seen in archive footage somewhere, but here was a very poor forward who, on this day, managed to dribble the entire opposition half (I still maintain he never actually had the ball under control) and scored at the Kop end. Astonishing moment in an otherwise uneventful Blades career.

2. Bob Atkins @ Millmoor.
Dazzlers pretty much nailed it but it was unbelivable and Bob was useless.

3. John Gannon @ Forest.
Cracker from edge of box, wrong foot, flew in. Gannon was not the worst player but a goal scorer he was not.

Obvioulsy if Douggie Brown had scored any sort of decent goal he'd have been a shoe in (or our favourite ex York centre half come to that).

Mike Lake at Southampton on 11/1/92.

Lake was generally shit, but for some strange reason started playing like Zico in Jan/Feb 92 (hence his nickname). He managed 5 goals, most of which were good, but the favourite has to be that dipping 35 yard shot at The Dell. This time, I said "don;'t waste it" as I saw him shaping up to shoot and end what looked a promising attack...

Del Geary (big heart, decent full back but not a goalscorer) 25 yarder v Millwall in about 2004.

Steve Wigley v Blackburn remains the greatest goal I have ever seen by a United player, though it was not a screamer SEB!

I think Wigley was poor enough for us to qualify.

Jean Calve v Preston
Keith Treacy v Leicester
Steve Wigley v Blackburn
John Ryan v Rotherham
David Frain v Sunderland

Funny how the mind plays tricks. I remember him getting the ball wide on the right, cutting inside and beating 3 or 4 players before drilling into the corner.

Tri Dellas scored a belter against Portsmouth that almost snapped the Kop-end crossbar. Didn't have him down as a goalscorer though (or much of a footballer when he played for us). That said, can't imagine many of our players have gone on to win the Euros.

I remember him scoring from the byline/six yard box intersection in a friendly against New Zealand, cracking goal.

I'll add any goal scored by Doyle.

That sounds like his goal against Man City on 8/2/92. He also did a long range one at Forest on 1/2/92

Was that a night match ? If it was I remember it well.

Think he scored against us for Forest more than once.

No, it was on Saturday 9th November 1985. Blackburn went 1-0 up, McNaught equalised, 2-1 then to Blackburn, then Morris 2-2. HT 2-2.

Just after HT came the Wigley goal., 15 mins from the end, ex Wednesday player Lowey did a speculative shot from about 35 yards which Burridge let slip through his hands for a final score of 3-3.

I seem to remember Richard Cadette scoring a screamer at some point in the 1980s.....someone will have to fill the gaps :-)

Right, seeing as my memory is fading badly and not referring to tinter web - I think I remember a great goal from a 70,s right back on a Tuesday night at the Lane kicking towards the Kop against Brighton to secure a 2-0 victory. Step forward John Cutbush !

Please Darren tell me I'm at least close ....

Indeed Dazzler. A goal fit to win any game until my second least favourite goalkeeper (DR in case you're wondering) stepped in and fucked it all up.

Some good calls here. Must say I'd forgotten all about Jean Calves stunner. Fits the bill of this thread to a tee although not in the way I originally meant as Calve could have been "anything" at that time whereas my choices were already known to be poor before one moment of magic.

Although not strictly in the spirit, because he wasn't a seriously bad player, Gareth Taylors wonder strile vs Forest was way beyond anything else I saw him do.

Yep. 4th April 1978.

He only managed 7 goals and you may be thinking of the one he got v Ipswich at the Lane end on 26/3/88.

Wow, another good call.

Brings Tom Heffernan's barnstormer v Orient into play. Mark Dempsey once scored a curling free kick in Edwardsesque style but I can't remember the opponents.

Reading 11/10/86. That was the one where we were 3-0 up after a hour and it was 3-3 after 65 mins.
