Premier League transfer spend

It’s misleading because you haven’t factored in income from players old (transfers out).

Last season in the Premier our next spend was about £30 million
But that was higher than several clubs Wolves, Luton, Fulham, West Ham, and Everton.

Our big problem whilst in the Premier league was that no clubs were coming in offering £50 or £60 million for any of our players.
This exact point was brought up by Steve Bettis in one of his interviews on Radio Sheffield.

man citys only spent big now for when they get an embargo in February they will get docked 30 to 40 points which mean theyll stay up as the bottom 4 are adrift

should do a Rangers on them START AT THE BOTTOM

I’d wouldn’t give the scally mancs the opportunity to hammer teams across the 4th, 3rd and 2nd tiers for the next few years and it takes away a promotion place in those leagues during that period, they’ll only end up back where they are now and the fans will have a laugh in the process so not really a great punishment.

Unless of course they break ffp for the division they are in.....

Yes well known football finance expert Kieran Maguire posted it today The whole post is quite interesting

Cheers, yeah it's interesting if you know what the full context of it is. The first one you posted was for the 3 year period, only for the sides currently in the Premier League, with Forest spending 365 million. This season only 86.8million, clearly because they're close to FFP or whatever the new acronym is. I understand that Everton are trying to get their house in order and both Newcastle and Leicester are close to FFP as well.

Looking at Brighton, they're a having a big spend, but does that mean that they are also getting close to FFP limits.

Would say Rangers haven't really caught up yet still playing 2nd fiddle to Celtic

Would lose a lot of players who want the lime light of playing in the champions league and will the owners carry all the loss of prem and euro TV money ie double or treble their investment for league one football and winning only the trophy v crewe

Brighton are in the fortunate position of having regularly sold players to bring in funds which isn’t the case for Forest and Everton

And they've had success on the pitch with it, Forest are heading that way as well (like Villa and Newcastle both did) but at a big cost as they don't have the depth of squad to compete in europes top competitions as well as the league.

Brighton had their success but have dropped off a bit so need to keep the recruitment and balance in the squad as they push forward.

Again, the context of the charts is key, it appears to be total spend rather than net spend or total spend relative to turnover

Man City sold a lot of youngsters so their net spend was actually among the lowest in the league certainly of the top clubs. Obviously this season that's caught up with them

Brighton often have a big spend but a bit like Southampton a few year back
Always seem to be able to sell their best players for £70 to £100 million, so their net spend is negligible.
It’s great business when you think they sell off their best players, replace them at a lower cost and somehow seem to be even better.

Bettis made the point that if we able to sell one of our players for £100 million….then we’d be spending £150 million each season on players in the PL.
Regards spending power, player sales are a massive part of the equation.

Wednesday fans think their owner doesn’t invest in players when it’s simply not the case.
The problem with SWFC is they are unable (for some reason) to sell any of their players.
In the last 10 years they must have raised a pathetic £5 million in player sales, which is a disgrace.
As mentioned the net expenditure on the playing side at SWFC this season is higher than what we’ve paid out.

Spending on transfers is only one part of spending on playing staff - there’s also the costly business of hoovering up all the talent from 6 years old and spending millions developing it for example, or bringing someone in on a ‘free’ because you’ve offered them a multi-million pound signing-on fee and millions more in wages and bonuses. And there’s paying-off failed managers to get new ones in. There’s a long list of ways the richest clubs spend huge amounts that go beyond just buying players with transfer fees. You can have a low net-spend on transfers and still be pushing a lot of money towards the playing staff.
