Davies has never been a very good Golakeeper. Fact he has played 44 games in the last 6 years and only 11 in the last 3 tells you all you need to know.

I said to my lad on about 40 minutes last night when Davies was still warming up that Cooper wasn't coming out for the second half. As we walked back up the steps following a half-time pint my heart duly sank as I saw him on the touch-line. It was effectively game over from that point.

Agree. I am amazed he has lasted so long at the club.

I play Sunday league as a goalkeeper (so maybe Davies will be down here soon) and there are two of us in the squad.
I feel for Davies; he looked, and always looks nervous when he comes on.
That said; why has he stayed so long and not looked for a move? He's never going to be #1 and honestly don't think he is the quality we need.

Same reason that Wes Foderingham left us to be West Ham's third choice keeper: because he's on a decent contract here with almost no responsibility. If he agitates for a move it'll be to L1/L2 and therefore less money and a lot more to do.

I have never rated many of our second keepers. There was only Simon Moore and Ian Bennett who came close to being decent second goalkeepers.

Seems the days of having an Alan Kelly or Simon Tracey dilemma are over.

Which makes sense as you don’t want to be paying the wages of a championship number one to get maybe 2 games and a sub appearance in a season.

You want a good experienced keeper who can do a job for a game or two. On paper Davies is that (experience in this league and a full international) but has made mistakes and doesn’t fill us with confidence.

Ian Bennett, Billy Mercer, Simon Moore. Always felt they’d do a job if needed.

You are right there hasn’t been that many decent back-ups since Paddy took over from Tracey.

We were very lucky for a long time. Stealing from something I wrote in 2009(!) we had the following goalkeepers start league games between 1989-90 and 2008-9, i.e. 20 seasons or 892 games:

Simon Tracey: 322 starts
Paddy Kenny: 276 starts
Alan Kelly: 213 starts
Everyone else: 81 starts

That's 91 percent of games in a 20 year period being started by one of 3 excellent keepers.

We were spoilt. That's not the norm for most teams. Adam Davies as back up is the norm.

Wilder's been here 3 times in that that period.

It's on him

Why are some people obsessed with blaming Wilder for everything? Wilder didn't sign Adam Davies, he came in under Hecky in the Slav season. He will have been identified by our scouting system and for I know was a better player before coming here.

An upgrade to the second keeper position could well have been one of CW's priorities after the Play Off final. Unfortunately he didn't get the chance to sign anyone.

To be honest though not much chance with 3rd and 4th goals and 2nd took a deflection.

Only question mark is their 1st for me and it's a decent strike.

A.Davies isn't the reason we lost it was what was in front of him. Especially us as a defensive unit. Imagine that display Vs a decent champ outfit. Wed have conceded 6+ goals and that oppo might have still had less than 2goals xg!

Probably for the best he didn’t get to sign another keeper as his last few have been Ramsdale, Foderingham, Verrips & Olsen, and if so remember rightly he was in charge when we brought Grbic in. Fairly sure he was also in charge the summer Davies was given a contract extension.

This will be the point where I’m told ‘ah but the board signed all them, Wilder had nothing to do with it’.

Fodderingham with all dye respect was brought in as a 3rd choice at the time, although eventually became our no1 over time was steady, terrible kicking and had rush of blood every now and then but he is levels above davies and olsen.

Verrips I reckon was use dipping a toe in with that bloke pa mate who was acting like a tech advisor type role (can't even remember his name) at that time we brought verrips, ratos and that striker in.. all of them hardly saw any minutes when wilder was in charge (so u could tell wasnt really his signings).

Well, Ramsdale was sold for a good profit and has played 115 times in the Premier since he left us and Foderingham was a great value free transfer, initially brought in as cover.

Verrips was signed under his tenure but probably as much a Wilder signing as Coulibaly. Olsen was signed when Slav was manager but I personally wouldn't blame him or Wilder for that mistake.

Grbic, I agree that he should take some of the blame for, but you've also omitted Simon Moore, Jamal Blackman, Dean Henderson and Cooper for some reason.

Cooper,

We sold Ramsdale for a profit, last seen playing for Newcastle 3 days ago. Henderson premier league regular.

So, a touch selective, though that's no surprise ;)

Ramsdale was largely at fault for our relegation in 20/21, went on strike and went on to torpedo arsenals title chances before being relegated (again). He’s not a premier league keeper. He’s playing backup to Nick pope.

Blackman and Henderson were loans. Cooper’s had one good season and is currently the worst keeper in the league.

The criticism surrounding Cooper generally seems to ignore the fact, as has been reported on here, that Cooper has been playing with an injury. It's hardly his fault if his understudy isn't up to the standard we need. Cooper needs time to recover, and so far he hasn't had the opportunity to recover and find the form we know he's capable of.
