You really to get out more there are many people who live in the UK who have parents/grandparents who are 1st or 2nd generation Irish born in the Republic and in Ulster from a Nationalist community who have zero hatred for the UK given they actually live here I'm one such person. I often go to Ireland to see friends and family and I have a Sheffield accent and I have never been treated with anything treated as close as even dislike. Maybe because in 9 years time they might not want to use a ground where poles are still holding up the biggest stand? Especially considering the excellent stadia in the process of being developed at a number of clubs.

I haven't, but I was just giving you a personal anecdote and I'm not claiming to be representitive of everybody. I have met decent Irish people too.

For fairly obvious historic reasons, many of them hate us.

Of the couple of dozens visits to Ireland as a holiday maker over the decades I’ve never once had any sort of hate or resentment, not once. They are great people in my opinion. But if politics are brought up, each and everyone of them who gives a toss about it will say they hate the British Government not the British people.

My time in the forces and serving in Northern Ireland I kept a secret when visiting friends purely because I didn’t want any hassle but from maybe the late 90s onwards I never kept it a secret if asked and again never had a problem as I was always told it’s not the people they hate but the government.

But tbh in my experience it would only be about 1 in 10 who actually gave a toss about the politics and the history and have a discussion on it, would be a lot more up around the border counties though tbf but again they don’t hate the British people and border counties such as Donegal have always been teaming with British people on holiday especially the summer.

Well my father was a staunch Irish Catholic from Dundalk and he never had a good word to say about the English, Britain in general and the Royal family etc. As a (English) youngster I’d have to endure this one eyed bigotry from a man I loved dearly. But as I got older I found stories of the “struggle” and tales of the “RA” very tiresome.
I accept much of that bigotry has probably died along with his generation, and I would personally welcome Ireland to be part a British Isles tournament, but just wondered how the people of Ireland would feel about that.

I'm pleased to hear your experiences have been happy ones as mine have been with my Irish family and friends, equally with all the Irish people I have encountered on my visits to the Republic and the North.

When I go Ireland and speak with my cousins and when they come to England there isn't any anti-British sentiment discussed. I think the people of Ireland (North and South) would welcome a British Isles tournament. I was in Ireland the week after Jack Charlton died and you would not believe the number of cardboard cut outs of Jack that were in shop windows in even the very smallest villages in the South East and all over the Wild Atlantic way. I always find it interesting that Ireland Rugby Union (apart from the random “residency rules players”) are made up of players from all 4 Irish provinces covering both the North and South. Rory Best (from Belfast) was their captain at one point and they get on with it. I did the blades tour to Ireland in July 2007 playing Newry, Longford Town and Portadown. The fans of all 3 clubs were great and locals were really welcoming

I can’t believe we even thought that the Lane is at the required standard to host an international tournament in 2035. The Lane is a 90s stadium and needs improving to modern standards as soon as possible.

Apology accepted, Yes, my post was a little bit one dimensional and lacked context. But it was posed as more of a question than a statement of fact. I also have many cousins over there, but they are almost entirely from the north, just over the border in Newry. Maybe for obvious reasons they are a little bit mixed in their opinions, even though they do quietly like their dual status. But when I go over for (now quite regular) family funerals and the odd wedding, I’m always welcomed with open arms, even though they still persist in calling me the “Englishman.”
