Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

First game I really remember.

Sat in the South Stand, I thought the crowd was massive (but imagine it was 10k maximum), the red and white striped nets, and a 1v0 win.

Mel Eves scored (I think) or was it Mark Dempsey, can't recall now
Without looking I think we won 2-0 but could be easily wrong with the final score

Steve Butler missed a hattrick of good chances for Maidstone, including an open goal.

It was the first game after McEwan's resignation following the 0-5 debacle v Oldham.
Didn't he take the ball round Leaning and then hit it into the side net from a not at all narrow angle?

Danny Begara was caretaker manager as he was the following week when we won 2-1 at Bournemouth and Bassett was then appointed.

So the less well known DB is the only United manager with a 100% record...

Don't forget the indoor nets, to the left and back of the pavilion, on your photo.
Built by YCCC, specifically for all weather nets in the 1950's.

Did that become an indoor five-a-side pitch with a viewing platform? I remember going to someone's birthday party there, to play in a mini tournament.

Bassett kept Bergara in the backroom staff until summer 1988. I remember Bassett saying in his autobiography that Wendy's Harold Wilkinson told him that one of SUFC's coaches paid a visit to Wendy's ground and criticising Bassett's coaching methods to Wendy's coaching staff. Bassett didnt reveal the name of the coach in the book but revealed that it had made him decide to get rid of him during the summer. Was it Bergara?

Back in the days when you had to crash a bus into the flats to get the community together...

Looks like East Bank Road near the junction with Daresbury Drive. I grew up near there in the 60s , so I guess I was around for this, but I cant remember it. I do however remember a lorry losing control going down the really steep bit of Gleadless Road, across Leighton Road and crashing into the Ward family's tower house. ruined our gang's football pitch.......
