Preston V Toytown Observation

My best mate is a Toytowner so i went with him to the match. It was an interesting game to watch. Both teams went for it. Both goals were well taken , particularly the Preston equalizer which was quality.
Both during and after the match I was convinced if we had been playing either side we would have not been troubled by either of them. The Preston tactics were pure hoof. Every time it came out of the back line it had snow on it. For the team that the play off contenders fear I thought they were very average. Their forwards huffed and puffed but apart from the quality goal did nothing. Toytown did try to play football and I thought just edged it on play. However their forwards were mostly contained by a physical Preston back four.
Im absolutely certain that we would have beaten both teams convincingly and returned to Wembley this time to triumph.
If only we had had Nigel a month earlier.

I was there too, sat just behind the dugouts. Terrible match but good atmosphere and one of the best goals I've ever seen from Garner. I doubt there'll be a better goal at the World Cup.

Although the game was poor, Steve Evans and sidekick Raynor made up for it with their touchline comedy act. Evans is too fat to stand for long periods so he employs Raynor to prowl the technical area, wave his arms about after every challenge, abuse the fourth official, argue with the opposition, and endlessly mither his players with minor adjustments to their positions.

It must be awful playing for Rovrum. Raynor is constantly (and I mean constantly), in his players ears asking them to move ten yards this way or that. It's proper micro-management that must be a massive distraction. Also, when Evans brings a substitute on, he presses his forehead into theirs in some sort of warrior bonding ritual. That just can't be pleasant can it?

It seemed to me that djbaldken was mulling over what our chances would have been had we made it to the playoffs and met either of those sides, based on what he saw at yesterday's game.

djbaldken I watched the game in dribs and drabs but noticed Preston's hoof tactics every time. Can't believe those two teams are amongst the best in the league.

Funnily enough I don't agree.

Rotherham made PNE look ordinary by playing a high pressure, high energy game we can't replicate. When we played PNE their big powerful players pinned us back for almost the entire game.

Also, Rotherham's strikers were very good. In particular Revell had a great game - his athleticism and movement provided an outlet for them and a reliable means of turning PNE's ponderous defenders. He's the sort of player we lack, and when we visited Deepdale that was painfully obvious.

The second leg will be interesting because Rotherham are suited to playing away, but PNE will be happier sitting deep. It's going to be very close.

The reason was we had played 4 more games that month , and we still stopped them scoring , wgen Clough has got in who he needs to bolster our attack , it will be far different

I thought it was a poor game and both teams looked beatable on that display. I agree Rotherham have decent strikers with good movement - but having said that we still beat them recently despite playing lots of our kids. I think PNE had a bit of an off day too - I don't think it was all down to how Rotherham played.

I hope PNE go through - the Rotherham fans have got far too full of themselves recently. And then there is Evans, the obnoxious fat twat.

Why would Clough's arrival a month earlier have made any difference to head to head contests? Although we beat Rotherham recently, we really struggled to cope with Preston (although we had a makeshift back four with three different left backs in 10 minutes) and I felt we were lucky to get away with a point (which wasn't true at Tranmere or Oldham and we got all three at Vale towards the end of the season). Those teams simply weren't as good as Preston.

Fantastic goal by Garner as well, I'd defy any team to defend against that. He may never score another like it, but what a strike.

It wouldn't. But had Clough arrived a bit earlier we may have accumulated enough points to get in the playoffs and so been involved in a head to head contest with one of those sides.

I strongly disagree, i thought Preston played the lot better football and Rovrum hoofed it, thats how they got their goal. Although overall i felt Rovrum looked the more likely to win.

It certainly takes a specific type of person to go around pointing out if something isn't in the right place...(which it was anyway!)

As it happens I thought both teams looked pretty average but a 1st leg of a play off is difficult to judge given the nerves and determination not to throw it away before the 2nd leg. Would have been interesting to see how we'd have fared given how well we performed in similar games this season in the Cup. Would've fancied us against either of those.
