Its because you defend from the front. Watch Campbell on his own. No defender gets a free header, no defender gets time on the ball.
I would be loathe to use this season’s Campbell as an example. All he seemed to do today was to go for the man rather than win the ball, and his control was atrocious. Fluffed a great chance in the second half.

Here's Sheff United's scorelines whilst Tom Cannon has been on the pitch (goals scored or conceded whilst he's off the pitch not included)

Cannon debut - Plays full game: Blades 0 Hull 3.
Cannon starts vs Derby: Derby 0 Blades 1 (Cannon gets an assist)
Cannon starts vs Portsmouth: Blades 2 Portsmouth 1
Cannon starts v Boro (subbed off at half time): Blades 1 Boro 1 (we win 3-1 after he goes off)
Cannon subbed on vs Leeds 59th minute - we're winning 1-0. Blades 0 Leeds 3
Cannon subbed on 73rd minute (we're winning 1-2) QPR 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 64th minute (we're winning 1-0) Blades 0 Preston 0
Cannon subbed on 76th miniute (we're winning 0-1) Pigs 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 70th minute (we're winning 3-0) Blades 0 Coventry 1
Cannon subbed on 76th minute (we're losing 1-0) Oxford 0 Blades 0
Cannon subbed on 65th minute (we're losing 0-1) Blades 0 Millwall 0

In 11 appearances our form whilst Cannon is on the pitch is W2 D6 L3 our actual form in those games is W7 D0 L4
In the 443 minutes Cannon has been on the pitch we've collectively scored 4 goals. That's around 1 goal per 111 minutes.
In that same time period we have collectively conceded 9 goals. Tom Cannon himself has contributed 0 goals and 1 assist.

Basically if you see Cannon coming on, you can just walk out of the ground at that moment and you'll probably be glad you did.
"If Cannon's on - we've given up" might be an appropriate chant.
Please Chris there's got to be better on the bench than him, stop giving him game time every chuffing match!
Cannon is a Wilder signing, he’s always going to be trying to get him in the pitch.

Can anybody tell me what that free kick was for!
Didn't see any infringement at all
For starters, I'm not blaming the ref/Cannon for our insipid performance and subsequent defeat. But as Cannon was stood outside of the penalty area, I'm not sure how/why the free kick was given? It was the GK's choice to run to the edge of the area towards Cannon and try to kick it...

All game the ref gamble soft decisions. Mostly to our benefit, but thought he was weak

I assumed it was a new rule. Cannon just stood there, not stopping their keeper at all

I'm going to contradict myself a little bit here, but are there statistics that can compare Campbell and Cannon playing in the same position this season?

I think they have both been terrible, but i also dont think you can compare them as they haven't really played in the same position enough to be able to compare (hense the contradiction).

If they have both been terrible up front (which is a very strong possibility), potentially the manager needs to change the way we play, to get the best out of them (just a thought).

With what we have available at the moment, perhaps 3-5-2 is the best option.

Play them both up top with Hamer behind and two more defensive midfielder behind with one holding and one up and down.

Burrows on the left, the strongest of the bunch on the right.
Tanganga, McGuinnes and Godfrey as a 3 (until players get fit) at the back.

Anyway, back to my computer cos that systems great on there 😂

I’ve tried to defend him in the past, but really think it was just out of desperate hope that he’d come good eventually.

He’s garbage, we’ve been absolutely hoodwinked into signing him and I don’t think I’m being over the top saying I’d rather have Beattie up front….

Craig Beattie that is.

Unfortunately, we're a team that just doesn't create many chances, so most strikers will look a bit shit in our side. Absolutely doesn't excuse a lack of effort, but you can understand why you'd be a bit despondent as a striker in this set up.

You just have to look in his eyes. There's no spark there, there's nothing behind them. He's just dead on the inside. It may as well be a cardboard mask he's wearing, his expression never changes.

My words rang true in early April, and as sure as night follows day, it is an irrefutable fact at this point. If Cannon comes on, get yourself off home and beat the traffic and kick the dog without even checking the final scoreline, and you'll have saved yourself some depressing viewing.

In the 1117 minutes Tom Cannon has been on the pitch for us since he joined in January 2025, we've collectively scored 11 goals. That's 1 goal per 101.5 minutes.
In that same time period we have collectively conceded 22 (1 per 50.8 mins).
Blades Goal Difference with Cannon on the pitch = -11
Tom Cannon has contributed 1 goal and 1 assist in those 1117 minutes.

I made him a chant:

There's a dimness in your eyes all the way
If we booed you every game would you stay?
You're a man without conviction
You're a man who doesn't know
Professional's a contradiction
You score no goals, you score no goals

Cannon Cannon Cannon Cannon Cannon Comedian

You scores no goals
You scores no goooaaals
Laughing would be easy if he didn't play for my team
Ten Mill Obscene! Ten Mill Obsceeeene!

When he came on yesterday there was an audible groan from the crowd. Bringing him on is like making a voluntarily decision to go down to 10 men.

We need to take him out of the match day squad completely, for 3 months play him for the u21s see if he can start scoring goals at that level, if he does start scoring then maybe look at him at first team level again in December then if he is still not making the grade cut our loses and move him out In January.

In the meantime until Ings is fit enough give One’ a run of games, and promote young Beattie to the bench. Neither of them can be worse than Cannon.

It was almost uncomfortable wasn't it. Other subs all got a good reception, Cannons you could hear a pin drop.

I felt a little bad for him, it can't be good for his confidence, but tbh I wasn't full of hope when he came on either.

Seriously? Do you actually believe that? I can agree he isn’t a lone striker but even when tried as a two he’s a Brewster.
That's fucking harsh on Brewster, even banjo legs could be visibly seen trying.
Cannon hides behind players so good there's only ever a single shadow 😉

I didn't feel bad for him.

He's getting paid fortunes to be shit at football. Infact not even shit, just to be a passenger.

Ryan One and Jevan Beattie are so raw and absolutely not ready for Championship football, but god almighty they have to be better than him by virtue of the defenders needing to at least have their kit washed after.

As I said yesterday, Ryan One is 10x the player.

He makes them work for a start.

Cannon just wears the shirt and ambles around.
It’s time for One to get more minutes. One of the best players in pre-season playing out of position and if you go back to last season and his goal against Bristol, no one else in our squad scores that goal.

Peck was playing week in, week out at his age.

Agreed, but Cannon didn't give himself the contract or suggest the fee. That accolade goes to the board 😆

The bloke is dire though. Nothing against him as a person, but he just doesn't look anything like a professional footballer. He has zero redeeming qualities except maybe his shooting from range. Pace? Non existent. Strength? He looks and moves like he has a 50 year old dad bod.

He surely has to go down as our worst ever signing. Even Brewster offered more.

Its because you defend from the front. Watch Campbell on his own. No defender gets a free header, no defender gets time on the ball. Go back to other strikers, Didzy, Sharp, McBurnie, even fucking Mousset... they all chased and harassed defenders.

When Cannon is on he does nothing to help the team defensively or as an attacking outlet. An absolute waste of a player in our team.
Tbh this season i've barely seen Campbell do any of that either.

I have zero sympathy for Cannon. If he's getting that sort of reaction when he comes on then it's entirely down to him to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and change some minds. However, he comes across as spineless, poor technically and a bit dim. That's a toxic combination.

Actually... is the #7 shirt cursed? Since squad numbers were introduced in the second tier, before Cannon it was worn by Rhian Brewster (21/22 to 24/25), John Lundstram (17/18 to 20/21), Marc McNulty (16/17), Ryan Flynn (12/13 to 15/16), Will Hoskins & Nathaniel Mendez-Liang (11/12), Darius Henderson (08/09-11/12), Luton Shelton (06/07 to 07/08), Paul Ifill (05/06), Andy Liddell (03/04-04/05), Paul Shaw (01/02-03/04) and Michael Brown (00/01-03/04). Only Brown, Ifill and to an extent Flynn were any good for us. The rest veer between bang average, grossly overpaid and genuinely dislikeable...or all three (hello Darius Hendercunt).
