With the season all but done and dusted, and plenty of excellent of photoshopping done to provide glimpses of what next seasons shirt might look like, who should next years Scapegoat be?

I think we should offer Porter a contract because of this.Every set of football fans need a Scapegoat to vent their spleens on, and i feel Porter is the man for this role.

Who else can we make a Scapegoat?

We should pay someone way over the odds then he is doomed before we start.

Chris Porter is an anti-scapegoat.

Never, in the field of modern football, has so little pressure been put on a man, with so little talent.

"Porterised".....we actually celebrate shiteness where Chis is concerned.

You still preaching Marlonisation? Its such a big word, its been around since Richard the Third.

Why do we need a "scapegoat" ??
Why can't we simply comment on the positives and limitations / weaknesses of players as we see them and discuss this like the knowlegable responsible adults that we are ? .......

some are already making noises about Baxter so hes in contention.

Collins and Doyle are always front runners.

I prefer to think of it as character building.

If they take can't take the abuse then they are weak-minded and not the sort of player we need.

I will celebrate any player who does the business for us. I thought King would, and recognised that he didn't. You see, I can recognise a poor player when I see one, and I refuse to get attached for the sake of being proved right. You should try it.

At the same time there are a lot of peope sticking up for any (even mildly) criticised player. The past three months the team has done very well, and with a few exceptions it seems this forum want them all to stay.

Despite the upturn under Clough, it is absolutely vital that we aim to improve and develop. That means we have to bring a few players in, and let a few players go.

Ched Evans ;)

Honestly though, Baxer seems like a good candidate for scapegoat (not condoning it though). Could also see a new striker being scapegoated if they haven't scored 20 by January.

When they fail as absolutely as Marlon did you are left with no option really. We clearly both see it very differently.

Got to be honest and say that whether this is meant with tongue in cheek or serious intent, there's a difference between criticising a player and making him an ongoing target for poorly considered comments. I don't see how this type of irrational behaviour does anything positive other than confirm in the poster's mind that he has made a 'valid' contribution to this forum.

There'll be plenty of moments when we can give someone stick, so why not be patient and judge a player on their merits, rather than adopt a pre-conceived position that someone deserves to be knocked just because there's a pack mentality at work.

This is why I expect Porter and Hill to go. It's something every club has to do regardless of whether they've got a Prince bankrolling them.

Porter and Hill are both at an age when they won't improve, and given Clough's preference for a small squad, there are very few candidates to make way for new blood.

I don't see any irrational criticism of Porter. I don't see what you're referring to. If anything, he's treated much better to a few others we've had with such little to offer. And I don't recall ever hearing him booed, and that's the way it should be.

I accuse him of having not one strong point to his game. That attracts vitriol from some for some reason, yet nobody ever seems to point out the attributes that I'm missing.

So are you saying we've got other poor players who I think are better than they are? Very confusing.

I just say what I see, nothing more.

You could never be accused of taking yourself too seriously Alco.

Read my post again. It was in response to the original post.

I made no mention of Porter so how your opening line was arrived at - "I don't see any irrational criticism of Porter" - is baffling.
At no point did I mention Porter or any other player. If you'd like a discussion about Porter my advice is to start a thread and get feedback from other posters. You are clearly not a fan of Porter, but why you decided to respond to my mail escapes me. As I said, puzzling.

Shame Lalas retired....what's Shaun Goater up to these days?

Well, another take on your post would be that you're actually taking serious the notion that Brownie is calling for a scapegoat - I dismissed that because that would be really baffling.

It seems I just don't understand it - so sorry for reading something into it that wasn't meant.

I did begin my original post with a clarification about the difference between criticism and scape-goating, which should clear up any confusion you may have about my intention.

From reading further posts, to scapegoat a player is meant to be character building. It could also be construed as bullying, which I think is usually the outlet for those who feel there's merit and benefit in doing this because they are clueless about how to be constructive in their criticisms.

Does anyone actually set out to "scapegoat" a player?

Surely, it arises when (as is the case with Porter), there's a split opinion. If you think he has something to offer, you really can't understand those who don't. So the next step is to charecterise it as scapegoating.

I'm the opposite, you'll be surprised to hear :) - I don't understand what anyone sees in him - unfortunately there's not a name for these types.

Of course, it can all be taken too seriously. This is a message board, intended to discussing such things. Bullying would be more apt when discussing a crowd getting on a players back - and thankfully I don't think he's had any of that.

At the sake of repeating myself, I'll do it to make sure that what I originally wrote is understood.

I never brought Porter into this, so please don't include me in a discussion about Porter's merits. The original post - whether tongue in cheek or otherwise - asked about who to scapegoat. I never mentioned a specific player, yet my comments have been construed as saying this. Some sections of the crowd at t'Lane have indulged in this from time to time. Fortunately they appear to be in a minority, but because they're very vocal they make a noise out of all proportion to their numbers. I doubt it will end. We're all entitled to an opinion, I'd just prefer there to be a suggestion of constructive thinking behind any criticism than something that celebrates mindlessness.
