Genuine question. If you were offered wilder back tomorrow, would you take it?
I think it’s extremely unlikely to happen, and it is clearly quite a polarising issue. I’m interested to see in the poll just exactly how unpopular it would be.
I was pretty shocked when he was sacked. The football wasn’t pleasing to watch. But given the situation he inherited it was effective and I think surprised most of us with such a serious promotion challenge.
Personally, I thought it was the wrong decision to sack him - it was a season too early. We could have had another season of much the same, and another real chance at promotion. Now - who knows what - but promotion already seems to be a dream and most of us are looking the other way. The worst part for me is that we seem to have squandered a parachute payment season. This is such a huge advantage, that to throw it away like this is a disaster. Wilder certainly isn’t perfect, but would have given us a strong chance. Now, it’s highly likely we’ll end up just being “another championship team” from next season onwards. It would’ve made much more sense to go for a whole new approach / big shakeup after the parachute money dried up, not in the middle of it.
To me, taking wilder back would be a “safe” option. He’d steady the ship. We wouldn’t go down. We might still mange a play-off challenge.
Anybody else would be more of a gamble. And a gamble when you’re already chasing your losses. But, if someone else was able to turn it around, this would likely be a better long-term outcome.
For the record my answer is a (somewhat begrudging) “yes”. But unless there’s a real dramatic change in the type of football, then I’d only want him this season to prevent a disaster and go again next season with a new approach.
