They had tax relief - lowering bills - in the tax years affected. HMRC are simply reassessing those years as the tax relief claimed was denied due to the scheme used no being allowable after legal challenges.

In short it’s money they’ve effectively had which the weren’t entitled to. The figures due will also include back dated interest and probable penalties.

I struggle to see their argument here tbh. Ive worked with many of this eras players and they openly talk about it, Its never sounded like anything was ever miss sold or hidden from them, they all seemed to be fully aware it could be clawed back however many chose to hear the words "want to reduce your tax bill now" Ive also spoke to many who said they saw this coming and avoided the scheme, so I guess contradictory to my statement above the Co involved were pushing it whilst other advisors were saying to avoid it. I have been told that certain names were big vocal champions of the scheme and pushing it, but I don't know if they were on a kickback for referrals or just couldn't believe how good it seemed.

No one deserves to be scammed but I dont see this as a Post office scandal or some cowboy builder taking £10k off an old woman and not doing the job, its exactly how you described it.
