I'll make my excuses first, there are many reasons not to sign past players, you should never come back once never mind twice, the footballing world is bigger than South Yorkshire, not that Billy Sharp obsession yet again surely, etc etc.

However, watching the style of football we have played for the past 3 months, time and again have I pictured Billy Sharp revelling in all the balls to feet, laying it off to the marauding wingers, finding space in the box pulling away from defenders, scoring plenty of goals AND providing loads of assists. The lad is only 28 years old and for what he lacks in pace he makes up with game awareness and plays with his head up and even in the box knows exactly where players are. He is short but this team plays it to feet, absolutely tailor made for the big Blade.

Billy's contract with Southampton runs until June 2015 but surely all parties would welcome a deal on sensible terms. In purely professional terms he is too good for League 1 but I bet he would jump at the chance to put past spells to rest; the circumstances were not right for him then but they would be now. He looks a Clough type player to me and a sure fire winner at this level.

Sharp will be able to get a deal with a second tier team. Why on earth would he take the pay cut involved in signing for a 3rd tier team?

are you aware hes scored 16 goals in the last 3 years

dont let facts get in the way of a myth though
have you ever thought why hes had more clubs than Tiger Woods
Brandys scored more goals and I dont want him

hardly what we are looking for is it

Billy Sharp needs to be at a settled club for you to see his best. He would be perfect for how we play in my opinion. He has made his money now at Southampton so it's time to come home. Nigel tried to sign him a few times at Derby apparently.

With investment, class management, a creative season ticket deal ;) great youth players coming through and the bones of a good squad what would we want to set our sights on Billy? Miller is the same kind of player, scored again for the Shrews.

If you don't think Sharp is good enough for League 1 this year and the Championship the year after then fine, it's all about opinion.

He has had all these loan spells because he got a big, long dated contract with a team he helped get promoted to the Premiership and who then changed their manager and playing style and went on to great things, that's all. Have you ever thought why Adkins and O'Driscoll always wanted him in their clubs time and again?

However statistics tell only part of any story. 16 goals in 64 games in the Championship in three disjointed spells out on loan is a respectable goals tally. Bear in mind Ched only scored 13 goals in two full seasons in the Championship with us. Sharp's career statistics will bear comparison with any player who could possibly play for us.at this level.

The lad went to Wembley last week bear in mind.

He's as big a Blade as you and me, that's why.

all strikers are as good as their goals per game ratio . which is why porter gets slaughtered,
Sharp being a blade some how gets this key feature over looked , but professional view of him means hes not selected at most clubs he goes to , you have to ask why, when we get back to what I consider our level , on a par with forest, Reading and saints pre current prem era , you have to ask why any of them couldnt find a place in their team on a consistant basis for him

Tough one that.

"Billy, I know [insert name of reasonable 2nd tier team] are willing to pay you £10K a week and we can only afford to pay you £4K a week, but you are a big Blade and thats got to be worth £300,000 a year in anyone's money"

Not many teams in the Championship will be able to pay him anywhere near what he was on at Southampton. Do you think if Donny stayed up they would be able to offer him 10k? What about Wednesday? Personally, I believe that the FA cup takings have levelled things up enough and if he wants to and more importantly Nigel does, why not?

Average wages in the 2nd tier are over 3 times those in the 3rd tier

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ier-League-wages-FIVE-times-Championship.html

Since he rejoined United in 2007* he has consistently scored goals in the 2nd tier. There is no reason why he can't get a decent 2nd tier team to sign him who could pay him quite a bit more than United could.

EDit: should be " left United in 2009"!

again you only pay scorers big money if they score, Billy goal scoring is more myth than fact

kindly move on to someone who actually produces in a red and whit shirt, hes a lovely guy , but since signing for us in july 2007 he scored 73 goals in 7 years , 10 per season , which as hard FACTS , is less than Porter

We offered McDonald £7.5k per week. We will offer Brayford close to that. Trouble is it means we are not permitted to spend more than 60% of income and you can only spend it once in effect. Striker salaries have to be a priority in next year's budget.

As for scoring records 308 games 153 goals, not that bad, At this level 53 in 82 games!!

You think Miller is as good as Sharp?
Not really, my point is BS is not what we need. If it were Miller would have taken that role for us under NC but we need a physical presence with some pace not another 5'-7" player with a goal per game ratio >0.5.

Fair enough, the fact is though he can almost certainly get more money from a second tier team. Call me cynical, but I suspect that will weigh more with him than the bigness of his Bladeness.

I think the strategy will be to keep the costs down by using season long loans up front and using the budget for wages for a spine of defenders and midfielders.

1.) We can't afford his transfer fee
2.) He wouldn't want to take the huge wage cut required.
3.) He isn't the type of player we need to solve the forward problem.

The forward we need to be signing of upmost importance needs to be mobile, able to hold the ball up and able to run in behind. Sharp would be a great signing as a second striker but he would need another forward to be signed inorder to play 2 upfront. I don't think that's the way we're looking to play and I think Billy would really struggle upfront on his own.

He is out of contract. The rest I can understand your point.

Michael Brown in the rumour section (where this should be, as we don't have a 'same old bollocks' section) and now this here again. No reaction to this, just one comment. Can we please, please, please have just a modicum of imagination to make the rumours just a tad interesting!

He is out of contract and currently on loan at a team struggling to stay in the Championship. Can you give us a list of things you find interesting so we don't bore you :)

I think he's a realistic target and the type of striker we'll need next season.

He's not pulling any trees up at Donny, and there weren't any top end Championship clubs in for him on loan. He's not played regularly over the past season or so.

If he had the choice between a bottom end championship team likely to be fighting relegation, or join us again who I believe will be going for automatic promotion then I think he'd chose us.

The list:

Anything other the same old names brought again and again. Invariably because they have worn red and white before!

It's funny you know, I think the parallels (in footballing terms alone) between Sharp and Ched are extremely close. Yet our fans seems much less willing to re-sign Sharp than Ched. Fail to see how Evans would be a better option??

Strangely, the pigs and Donny were all over Billy last season, yet because he played for us before we shouldn't touch him? I like the Sharp suggestion and he is probably about the best we could get this summer.

Let the ones who want him back clap like seals :)

Let's face it, he isn't going to get his chance at Southampton anymore; that ship has sailed for Billy.

Will he get lots of offers in the Championship? I'm not sure right now. He's hardly pulled up loads of trees at Donny since joining them on loan so I don't see lots of Championship teams being that interested right now. Certainly not the teams towards the top end of the division. He's definitely a gamble signing for teams like Wednesday, it could pay off and he could fire them towards the Play Offs but equally he could prove to be an expensive flop. I'm not sure that there would be many teams willing to pay the money needed for Sharp. I'm sure Doncaster would like to sign him but that proves to be our chance. Realistically, how much more money can Donny be offering? Not the five times increase from L1 to Championship. FFP there gives us a shot against the likes of Donny and Millwall, teams that might look at him and consider it and then we have the advantage, you would hope, that Billy has sentimental feelings for United that might tempt him.

I think he is a realistic option but it would need the top end of our budget to come off. However, it'd be a gamble. Whilst I think he'd score goals in League 1, would he be good enough in the Championship if/when we get back there?

I disagree and if information is correct, Mr Clough will prove me right!

Don't see why we can't sign him, if Clough wants him I'm sure we could offer a decent sum to Southampton who would likely want him off their wage bill.
If other championship clubs want him how come none have actually put in the bids for him, Donny are happy to have him on loan but not willing to actually take him for a fee.
If its realistic that we can get Brayford why not Sharp as well, on the Brayford note he, Harris and Coady have had no problems dropping the divisions to play for us, so wouldn't sharp being a blade.
I would like him back as I think he would do well up front in this leauge alongside a possible Evans partnership, we would have a solid front line for once which we have lacked in a while.
But its all up in the air at the moment, so who knows what will happen but it would be worth the shot and trying to get him back.
