Bit too much doom and gloom on here recently (mostly from me), so thought I'd throw some stats in to suggest that the sky isn't falling down and we're (maybe) closer to being a competent side than we think.

We have the third-highest average possession in the league this season (59.9%). While we're not doing much effective with it so far, there is a strong positive correlation between average possession and total points at the end of the season.

We are joint-second for touches in the opposition box this season (95), only beaten by Coventry, who got a very healthy helping hand from QPR at the weekend.

We have a better xG than 13 other teams (4.2). While this is down to poor finishing so far, over the course of a 46-game season, actual goals tends to trend towards the xG. Middlesborough have scored 5 more goals than us, despite having an xG of just 2.8!

We have a lower xGA (4.0) than 10 other teams, including league leaders Stoke (4.5) and title favourites Southampton (5.0) and Leicester City (4.7). This suggests our opponents have been very clinical in their finishing.

I'm not saying we've started well - we've been crap. But the stats suggest we're not playing like a bottom of the league team, more like a mid-table team. We're strongly underperforming both our xG and xGA at a rate that's statistically unlikely to continue. Every now and then expectations are off over a longer time-frame, (Burnley conceding 16 goals last year from a 40.8 xGA was a 1 in 10,000 freak outcome, for example), but it's rare.

Regardless of incomings or changes in approach; assuming the players don't let their heads drop, don't be surprised if we start picking some points up over the next few games.

On the other end of the spectrum, Stoke, Middlesborough and Bristol City are all riding their luck. Expect them to drop off.

*In before "football is played on the grass not on spreadsheets", "xBollocks", etc. etc.

What the fuck are you doing? We've lost three games! The underlying stats in those three games and the context of those three games are completely irrelevant! We should have brought Wilder back in and then sacked him already!

It's very odd in pre-season we were very attacking. Maybe the pre-season opponents had a part to play in that but we looked decent going forward and our main concern going into the season was at the back.

Suddenly we seem to have panicked after the Bristol City match and decided to pull back.

Possession should not be a badge of honour.. some teams are very successful by deliberately not having posession.

(See Leicester and more recently Forest as some examples)

This is very true. It does generally correlate with league position though (Leeds had the highest possession last year, Plymouth had lowest).

That is the most concerning think for me. Might have been in a minority but I was positive after the Bristol game. I hoped we would make signings at the back and make tweaks in midfield. Now we don't look promising at all.

How long was it before we won ? !!
6th game at home to Norwich. Ashley Ward put Norwich ahead, Blake equalised before half time, Bryan Gunn complained that he was fouled carried on complaining to the ref all the way to the tunnel. When the players returned to the field for the 2nd half, some of us were mystified that Norwich had a different keeper (it was Rob Newman) then a loud cheer rang around the ground when the PA announced that Gunn got sent off by the ref in the tunnel. Veart headed in the winner.

Can't believe the EFL are letting this happen to us, do they not understand what it's doing to my mental health. I'm gonna email Donald Trump and tell him our owners are bringing dishonour on America.

Can't Prince William do owt about all this?

Your memory is incredible.

How many points do we get for that then..?

Dyche has a good point here perhaps?

Is that what you saw v Chezzy, York & Rovrum? Even the game in Nice?

I was concerned v Burton. A slightly better opposition was able to contain our “press” and play through or around it on many occasions. We didn’t control that game and we’re easy to bypass. That Moore scored a freaky goal 30 seconds before the end probably masked how dreadful we were. That has continued into the league so I have not been surprised at all by the crap start.

Can I point out that sometime or other we were bottom of some league or other and then went on to be not be though that may have been down to relegation?

Thanks. It gets confused in my old mind with the season when we went several matches before beating Forest at BL.
