Is Ruben Selles about to change formation?

The signings we're linked with, and have already completed point to a strong looking 3-4-3 formation in my opinion.
Cooper
Japhet - Bindon - Godfrey
Seriki - Soumare - Peck - Burrows
O'Hare - Campbell - Hamer

Leaving a bench of

Ben Mee
Zatterstrom
Tom Davies
Oli Arblaster
Andre Brooks
Louie Barry
Tom Cannon
Et al...

What's everybody else's thoughts? Could give a bit more licence for Burrows and Seriki, plus Tanganga and Godfrey are quick so could cover..

Fuck me, the legend that is Tom Davies is on ghe bench
When he was available and called upon last season I thought he looked decent. Injuries (and possibly motivation) has always been the key issue though. If Selles can get him firing I would love to see him and Blaster run the midfield. Without that and Vini gone I think we need one of Billing or Brownhill.

Agreed, that's the difference between Davies and Shackleton for me.
If Davies is fit for 10 games, keep him, he brings enough to make it worth it
If Shackleton is fit for 20, move him on, we don't improve when he plays .

I see that team losing the ball and never winning it back...

Maybe let Selles pick the team for a wee bit longer!

It’s not the selection that is wrong. It’s the tactics or “process” they are then asked to execute. It’s naive schoolyard footie. Waint work. We will struggle without quality loans and a change of system. Unfortunately that may mean a change of manager.

If all things work out
Cooper
Godfrey
Tanganga
Bindon
Burrows
Seriki
OHare
Soumare
Hamer
Arblaster
Barry
Campbell
I’d give that a go if/when available
As ever UTB !

It’s the future , if we move like first half v Bristol City no one will be able to count them ! Didn’t mean to add Seriki ha
As ever UTB!

I've said elsewhere that we gave a real mishmash of a squad but even last season it was extremely obvious that our fullbacks were more suited to playing as wingbacks. Even McCallum makes a passable wingback.

We don't have enough height in the the team so playing 3 CBs helps that as well. Gives us width without trying to play wingers/wide men which hasn't worked for 2 years.

With the players we have, this is the obvious formation

-----------------------------------------Cooper(Davies)
-------------------Bindon/Godfrey-----Mee/Tanganga/Bindon---Robbo/Z
-----Seirki/Godfrey----------------------------------------------------------Burrows/McCallum
----------------------------------Peck--------------------Soumare
---------------------Hamer/Brooks----------------------------------Barry/O'Hare
----------------------------------------Campbell/Cannon/One

Said similar mate.

There still seems an awful lot to do.

If you revert to a 3-4-2-1 then not so much.

Complete moves for Mee and Tanganga. Offload Robinson and Norrington-Davies. Bring in someone like Choudhury or Iroegbunam. Then done. You don’t need to mess around to get crucial wingers because you don’t need them.

Keeper - no worse than last season, Cooper, Davies, Faxon.

Wing backs - Seriki, Burrows, McCallum can thrive there, I reckon Ukaki could work as a RWB alternative too.

Centre backs - Mee flanked by Godfrey an/or Tanganga to the right and you can ease Zatterstrom into the team in a three far more readily. Less pressure on Bindon too. That’s 5 for 3 spots. Arguably McCallum has attributes to play LCB given he’s extraordinarily good in the air as well as quick before out even consider Sasnauskas.

Midfield - Peck alongside a Soumaré or a more experienced version like Choudhury who can also cover right side and I reckon could be a centre back in a three if needed. You then will have hopefully Arblaster and Davies adding depth.

Attacking midfield - finally a system that allows Hamer and O’Hare to play with freedom and introduces Barry and/or Brooks without pressure of starting.

Forwards - Campbell as no 1 with two creators behind him. Option to go 3-4-1-2 with Oné and Cannon.

That’s 25 players mentioned. Reasonable balance, no silly transfers to make it happen.

3-5-2
Cooper
Godfrey Mee Tanganga
New-RWB O Hare New-CDM Hamer Burrows
Ings Campbell

Subs:-
Davies
Seriki
McCallum
Zatterstrom
Soumare
Peck
Brooks
Barry
One

Others:- Faxon, Bindon, Arblaster, T.Davies, Ukaki, Marsh

Sell:- Cannon, Robinson, Shackleton, Curtis

Two new signings and we’re done

With the lack of wingers and problems at the back 532 might not be a bad option for us. The only downside is the lack of options up top as we pretty much only have Ings, Campbell and Cannon.

Isn't Soumare a new CDM?

We've got to do something that's a bit more defensively pragmatic than what we've seen so far but not to go into park the bus mode like we did last season.

My proposal is either 4231

Cooper
Godfrey, Tanganga, Mee (if he signs)/Bindon (if not), Burrows
Peck, Soumare
Brooks, O'Hare, Hamer
Campbell

Arblaster into Peck/Soumare's spot once he's fully fit

or

Cooper
Godfrey, Mee, Tanganga
Seriki, Peck, Soumare, Burrows
Hamer, O'Hare
Campbell.

Also has the ability to change into something like what Bielsa did at Leeds with 3-3-3-1. Push Peck on a bit in attack or hook him, put Barry or Brooks on and push Hamer in behind Campbell.

Billing gone back to a danish team, would've been a good signing.

He is but probably only ready to be a backup/rotation player at the moment.

The manager who signed him clearly seems to think so anyway.

I envisage us having at least a first XI of players who are or have been proven to be top 6 Championship players.

With the fringe players and “ones for the future” being exactly that for the moment.

Too much to ask?

We need a change of formation and system and it needs to happen NOW.

I want Selles to succeed, I maintain that he wasn't backed anywhere near well enough or anywhere near early enough. BUT he has to identify the flaws in a system and rectify them.

Seriously, what are the redeeming qualities of our current formation or system? We aren't solid defensively, we don't retain possession and we don't create chances. We are fucking woeful.

The system doesn't work. The players are sold short by the system, they are chasing shadows, frustration sets in, confidence drops. Sort it out now or make a managerial change.

Cooper
Tanganga Mee Godfrey
Seriki Peck Soumaré Burrows
Hamer
Campbell Ings

That could not fail to be an improvement

Ings and Campbell isn't a partnership btw which further illustrates the total lack of vision and joined up thinking

Even if he went to a back 3, Selles would still try the same midfield three and it'd still not work.

It's like the opposite of Wilder's stubborn flat midfield three in the PL, when even if he changed to a back four mid-game, the trio of doom remained in place in the middle.

The squad is quite suited to either four or three at the back now, just needs a manager capable of using it.
