Player Suggestion Ben Godfrey

How much does a typical loan signing cost? If we’re paying Godfrey’s wages and no loan fee that’s £3.5m total until the end of June.

Say for other players we have to pay a £1m-£2m loan fee plus wages, then it probably doesn’t work out much more expensive for Godfrey.

£3.5m player that isn’t ours and goes back at the end of the season and a question regards his fitness, not so sure?

I would like a permanent signing to replace a permanent signing, not another loan.

Selles has been told he’s been given part of the sales money, obviously no clue how much that is, but seeing as it looks like he’s after a no9 as well, I’m guessing things might be a bit tight?

I can't see us paying all the wages - though even if we did its the same cost as bringing in a player on half the wages with a £1m loan fee.

Feel its more likely they will cut their losses and be happy to get 50% of his salary off their payroll - probably like we have done with Grbic

I actually think he would be an astute signing depending on what kind of wages he would be on.

However it's yet another loan in a key position.

I'd be happy with Godfrey on loan and a perm young CB.

That would give us;
JLT
Godfrey
Bindon
New perm CB

Back ups:
RND
The two academy lads.

Yes, two loan CBs and one in his last year isn't ideal in terms of continuity.

Yes we need to give it a go, but ideally we should also try to plan long term, certainly in the spine of the team.

Presumably this would be the Hughes signing, but it would definitely be nice to have more than one long term permanent project in central defence.

My ideal conclusion to this window in defence would be all three of the discussed targets, Hughes for now, Godfrey to also cover off RB and compete with Bindon for the middle, and then Zatterstrom too. But I admit this is unlikely and I'm more likely to have the wife bring home Mila Kunis.

We could make a permanent signing that turn out to be another Brewster, cost a fortune and always injured.

No guarantees in what you do, sometimes a loan turns out to be better than a permanent and vice versa.

I don’t see the problem to be honest, I just want good players to sign for this season and get promoted. That’s all that matters at the moment

But its not all that matters is it? There has to be an eye to the future beyond next May and if we dont go up ( very likely) and we dont sign a permanent CB then come June we are left with just RND on our books and you could argue hes a left back.

Then what? Parachute payments have ended so are we signing decent permanent CBs next summer if we didn't this?

I'm pretty sure someone will be signed but until they are its not surprising many of us are nervous given there has been no communication from the board or Bettis as to what out long term plan is.

You'd be paying £20m plus for a player with his experience for a perm deal (fee plus wages).
That is what you're factoring your £3.5m risk against.

Godfrey is currently on their books and not playing, but still apparently costing them £60k / week.
Whilst they may want the club that takes him to pay all of that fee, commercial sense indicates that they would be prepared to accept less.
As time moves on prior to the closure of the window it becomes more of a buyers market and this is why we have not yet made any significant signings

More chance if getting gazumped and losing targets though!

Not sure how far this wedge that the owners have given Selles will go?

Looking at squad numbers allocated Selles may also be after a No9 ?

Personally I wouldn’t want to spend £3m on a loan that is not our player and goes back at the end of the season, especially if money is tight, but that’s just my opinion
but if the idea of signing Godfrey is to help strengthen our defence sufficiently to achieve promotion, wont it be worth it?

I get it but I was hoping Selles’s overseas scouting could find a cheap gem

Spending £3.5m on a loan that will go back at the end of the season if we don’t go up and we are then still, after Gods know how long, short of CB’s I’m not in favour of.

If we can afford Hughes which would be on a permanent, I’d rather go with that. Our player, open to improvement and of course a saleable asset should the shit hit the fan

Dunno why cos it's more than likely not true but still part of me thinks Godfrey is a smokescreen and we're signing Nils and the Korean kid plus a striker possibly even Danny Gudjohnson on permo's given Selles comments about Scandinavian league and his personal interest in it and saving our loan spots for any injuries we might collect or towards end of the window just has that feeling to me

If we don’t go up this season the future isn’t look very good, therefore promotion is number 1 priority.

If we can sign some players on permanents that will have a long term future with us whilst also getting promoted, then great. But we have to go up, if loans help us achieve that, then so be it.

I don't like it, but I can kind of stomach it if he's signed to cover both CB and RB and we spend decent money on a permanent CB. We're going to be spending £3 million plus on loaning a player we then won't own. And then have the same problem next season.

Can't get a multi pack of Wotsits for £3 these days

Hope not, that would leave us in a really rough position, particularly in defence.

Not a player I would want that kind of outlay on tbh. Too many red flags and it’s been years since he’s been consistent.

Signing him on loan for the year is the equivalent cost to the signings of burrows or cooper at those types of wages. Another way of looking at at it is 69k per week is probably more than what Brewster Moore and grbic have cleared off the wage bill - there’s surely better ways to spend it

I’d much much rather find the next young permanent addition than spend on him, Get very little out of it for a year and then STILL be in a position where Jack Robinson is your only CB. Feels so wasteful

You want to be finding the next attacking superstar like mcatee or mGW when good clubs want to blood but no lose instead of some millstone a club wants shot of.

Godfrey on 50k a week. Classic dressroom unrest. Building a strong unit better than signing an underachieving 50k a week mostly on the bench past few years
