Team for Rotherham

Hamer was head and shoulders above anything else on that pitch today - the owners have already lost quite a bit of their money, sell Hamer and their investment I'd say is bordering on 50% of what it was.
There was far more vertical passing and attacking intent in the second half when Hamer wasn't on the pitch. I feel that he wants to play too deep needlessly taking the ball of the defence when he would be more effective higher up the pitch like COH.

Unless u r taking the piss name the 13 teams who will finish above us if we make no further signings
Not taking the piss at all, we look extremely lightweight, the 2 signings we need are exact what we have lost- we need a Vini & a Souttar, keep Hamer and we will do well. Without those signings this team is going to get bullied big style, it's so plain to see its ridiculous.

Without replacing Souttar and Vini with similar size and ability- 14th

Get 2 good additions that are similar - 5th
That's around 18 points and as many as 25 goals were goal difference.

Slight overestimation of the ability of 2 players who already missed a fair few games last season

I get the quality of opposition isn't Championship but we look a lot quicker than last season already. I like the intensity style rather than the tortoise style. Signs of a good season are there. Bringing in Seles might work. Overall very encouraging

My prediction:

Under Wilder we aim to win 1-0.
If we concede then we try to win the game 2-1.
The last 20 minutes of most games when we were leading…..we parked the bus and managed to scrape a win….in most games.
Even with an impressive points record our fans weren’t happy with the negative style.

Under Selles we’ll be more expansive and positive…..we’re giving the fans what they want eh?
We’ll now see some very impressive 5-0 wins but occasionally we’ll get caught out or outdone tactically and we’ll see the occasional 2 or 3-0 defeats.
Our fans won’t be happy with naeve tactics and incredibly you’ll find many saying we should focus on defence and play more like Wilder.

Conclusion: It doesn’t matter what we do, how we play…..fans will find something to complain about.

Hull under Selles only lost by 2 goals once, against Burnley, and know how easy that is.

i know we shouldn't compare, david weir is proof of that. brilliant pre season & was a dead man walking 6 weeks later

but as i on shoutbox. 12 mths ago we beat york 2-1 & Rotherham 2-1. this season its 6-2 & 5-0. also 24/25 we scored 12 conceded 4 in 5 friendlies. we've already all but matched it in 2. things are looking very bright

You had to feel sorry for Weir.
He decided his style of play was “possession football”, even the defenders were under orders to play it out from the back.
Also most of the team tactics involved our best player Kevin McDonald.

We looked great in Weirs 1st match at home to Notts County and I genuinely thought we looked good for promotion.
Then Kevin McDonald was sold a few days into the season and obviously we were never the same.

Weir stuck by his principles…..trying to get us to play like Peps Man City.
It worked in spells but obviously a player or defender would misplace his pass….and the opposition would score an easy goal from our mistake.

This attack happened after Hamer dropped deep to start build an attack. Rotherham tried to press us high up the pitch, but Hamer dropped deep, held on to the ball, ran with it, passed it around, all with the intention to break their pressure. Eventually they had to resignate, and that's when we got an opening to hurt them:

Although the highlights doesn't show the brilliance of Hamer's out of position deep playmaking, it shows what we gained from it.

I think this will lead to some confusion about what formation we play and what role Hamer plays. A formation should be categorised based on how a team lines up when the opposition have the ball. But even this is a lot less rigid than it used to be, and the shape will look different if the team tries to press high, close down and mark certain players and prevent the other team to build in a specific area. Here's an photo showing a rare occasion where our basic (4-3-3) shape can be assessed:

So, Peck is the holding midfielder, Hamer is LCM, Marsh RCM. Within this formation, Marsh and Hamer's roles are a bit different, with Hamer having a bigger role to play when it comes to building attacks from deep. Burrows' role is also different (stepping into central areas) to Sasnuaskas' more traditional full back role.

I love how much we keep the ball and run with it. The second half demonstrated how deadly this can be as it drew players out to meet the player with the ball creating huge spaces to exploit. Long may this continue. It's a shame Davies is injured as he was one of the few players to do this last season and he'd thrive under Selles.

We’ll now see some very impressive 5-0 wins but occasionally we’ll get caught out or outdone tactically and we’ll see the occasional 2 or 3-0 defeats.
Our fans won’t be happy with naive tactics and incredibly you’ll find many saying we should focus on defence and play more like Wilder.
Why is it "incredible".

Let's see how the percentages play out. An action packed 80 points next season - say - stuffed with 5-0 wins and 3-0 defeats. Or an often tedious and dull 90+ points shutting up shop, parking the bus, and managing resources.

I don't see why it's so "incredible" to prefer the second option to the first.

Yes indeed , and I agree entirely with MartBlade’s comments above .

Boy oh boy ,does this lad like the sound of his own voice . In this role , he seems to be operating on the basis of why use ten words when you can use 50 . Worse still is the fact that much of it is tediously repetitious .

The two phrases he used most often today were “As I said before “ and “As we discussed earlier “ and then go on at at to repeat at length earlier observations he had made , many of which fell into the category of stating the bleedin’ obvious or were highly questionable to say the least

If he is to remain in this role , I sincerely hope that someone will have a word in his ear and remind he that it is one in which the co-commentator is not required to out speak the main one by at least a factor of 5 and that most of those watching SUTV have the capacity to assess what is happening on the pitch without him having to impart his great knowledge and understanding of the game upon us .

Maybe I'm greedy but I don't see football, or indeed the world, in binary black/white scenarios. I do don't this Wilderites v non Wilderites stuff. As I've said before, last season I thought Chris was the man for the job, now I'm comfortable with him being replaced. This doesn't however change how I feel about the outcome of the season. I want us to smash the league and get promoted (even though I fuckin hate the PL).

Why can't we have an approach where we go out to be expansive and positive and steamroll teams, however, at times when it may not be working or we've nicked a goal completely against the run of play for example, adopt a more solid, disciplined approach and win a tight game? In other words, there are times to go for it and smash em, and times to think, kin ell we are in serious danger of getting nowt from this, maybe chuck an extra defensive player in there and head/kick it into row Z for the 3 points.

I think we have enough talent in this current group to form the basis of a team that can do just that. What we need now is 3 or 4 good quality astute signings to make us even more solid and adaptable to whatever situation we find ourselves in in any particular game.

Absolutely spot on - personally I’d prefer to hear some expert views from an ex player …. Just supplementing the commentary.

I’ve got a feeling Ruben and his assistants are aware of this somehow

Here's my two penn'orth, for what it's worth.
I only got to see the second half, and squinting at my phone (yet another power cut that's only just ended) at a stream that was rather less than HD and didn't have commentary made figuring out who's who somewhat difficult, so I had to use AI ('Aircut Identification) in some cases.
A few things struck me as noteworthy:
  • the Selles system is made for O'Hare — he's going to be a key component, I suspect;
  • Brooks and Seriki look full of confidence;
  • it was lovely to see our players receive the ball facing our goal, and instead of looking for a safe backwards or sideways pass, turning their marker and trying to carry or pass the ball forwards;
  • similarly, players dribbling past opponents when a forward pass wasn't on.
An enjoyable 45 minutes. More, please.

Absolutely nailed it there mate!

Agree. Rob Kozluk is the best on the SUTV rotation. Hall maybe does it for free as he’s there anyway. Ex-pro’s will want a fee I imagine.
