Keith Hackett gives verdict on Sheffield United penalty and Rob Dickie red

Having reviewed the footage, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett told Football Insider exclusively that whilst the defender had made contact with the ball, the decision was a simple one for Langford.

“The Referee clearly has awarded a penalty kick for a holding offence.

“The Bristol player [Dickie] is holding his opponent and therefore not attempting to play the ball.

“It is a foul for holding, and the referee has made the correct call and been left with no alternative other than to dismiss the player for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

“Correct decision by the referee.”

It was absolutely brainless from Dickie and it something that winds me up in general when professional footballers do that so early in a game.

If you’ve no chance of making a genuine challenge just let them through. Far better to simply concede a goal that early than get yourself sent off and give a pen away.

If it was one of ours who’d done that I’d be fuming.
It had all the hallmarks of a JLT challenge 🙂

Who is this cnt trying to tell us and thousands of our fans who paid good money to go down there that we didn't see what we and millions of others saw with our own eyes, and that the laws of football as written shouldn't apply to this incident because it didn't suit him for it to do so.
Everybody who comes across people saying similar about it today, just laugh in their faces because it was the most justified and deserved penalty and red of this and any other season and he is calling the ref a cheat or incompetent, and us fans and club to be denied the application of basic football rules.
Needs to be disciplined for advocating cheating and getting away with it without any consequences for his team.

He got a touch on the ball only after he decided to be Moores hand luggage.

Foul had been committed long before the attempt to play the ball

He's made himself look a right stupid c**t there... he contradicts himself, he says yeah he's pulled him but made a genuine attempt to play the ball... how is it a genuine attempt if he's dragged him down from behind first? 😂.

He'd have been better just batting it away, like most managers in saying not seen it back to make a judgment on it, but instead he's let his sourness and emotions of getting battered get in the way.

What Mark Clattenburg said about Tyrese Campbell’s disallowed goal

We picked the brain of Mark Clattenburg on the situation, and he told us: “Campbell thought he had given Sheffield United an early lead but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

“Campbell, when he heads it goalwards, is in an onside position but his teammate Peck looks like he is just ahead of the ball. Even though Peck does not touch the ball, he clearly stops the defender from trying to clear the ball from going in the goal.

“It’s a tight call and without the use of VAR, we cannot be 100% if Peck is ahead of the ball. But, I believe as it’s so tight and I still believe the benefit should go with the attacking team, I would prefer to give a goal”

So, there you have it. It’s an incredibly tough one to call on the pitch, of course, but it sounds like when in doubt, the attacking team — United in this case — should have been allowed to celebrate the opening goal of the game.

Made no attempt to win the ball = straight red. The fact he got a foot on the ball afterwards is irrelevant. Manning needs to learn the laws of the game.
Well exactly this. I mean his arms were around Moore and he swiped his leg before the ball was even touched AND it was from behind let's not forget. To use VAR terms, that was pretty bloody clear and obvious.

If I body check someone in the stands and then collect the ball after does that make it okay? No. I like to think I'm pretty fair, I've called out united players for shit defending or tactics in fact I can't remember a red in recent times we didn't deserve. Nevermind Souza throwing himself to the floor a few minutes prior to the pen decision. All stuff that should be recognised.

I'm genuinely stunned people are actually willing to consider that wasn't a foul let alone a bloody red. It is true, we will honestly argue about anything these days.

Saying decision for pen is shocking said he got a foot on ball 😂what a complete nut job

To be honest I initially thought the same as being the last man is irrelevant.
As a penalty has been awarded then I knew the “double jeopardy” rule would be applied

And that revolves around whether the defender made a genuine attempt to win the ball.
Regards the tackle it is a genuine attempt, so as the BC manager said based on that in isolation it would be a yellow card.

However neither me or the BC manager noticed that in the build up to the tackle
Darling had his arms around Moore trying to pull him back from behind.
That part was no attempt to win, so under the rules, clearly a red card, the ref ended up being right.
Agree that Moore used his experience and played for the penalty but it’s still a penalty, the defender was stupid and should have let Moore take the shot.

It’s become quite common that when decisions go against a team…..the manager and fans who lose out on the decision always complain.

Regards our disallowed goal initially I agree with Wilder and thought it really harsh
But in the replay you can understand the decision, Pecks hip looks offside…..it’s close but whether it’s 1 inch offside, 3 inch offside or 10 inch offside….it’s offside.
Also it looks like their defender might just have been able to hook it off the line. It’s a close decision but at least you can understand why.

Rob Dickie – 1/10

Caught doing pirouettes in the middle of the pitch, before rugby tackling Kieffer Moore. Single-handedly killed his side’s slim chances of becoming a Premier League team

Clattenburg can still fuck off though

It'll be interesting to hear what he says about it in the next presser.

I'd have a lot of more respect for him if he held his hands up and said he was wrong to call it a disgrace.

Kin ell
Bernard Manning AND Clattenbug getting ‘kudos’ (in the same thread to boot !!!)
What the fuck is happening?!
It’s the “end of days” I tell ya !

Tbf a lad who I met through business ( and a hell of a lot more through the years ) messaged me this morning on FB out of the blue and said well done and it was a definite pen he was stood behind the goal, they really don't like manning

Maybe if he hadn’t been so busy pulling Peck’s shirt off his back the defender could’ve actually tried to get back and clear the ball 🤷‍♂️

Same starting 11 for me on Monday. They couldn't handle our front two. Moore in the air and Campbell running them ragged.

Moore should have a field day now that they have their main CB out.

If we score first then game over, if they do then squeaky bum times, but we are still in a great position.

I do think we will beat them at our place as well. I didn't see anything of a threat from their forward line other than 1 shot that hit the bar.

No chickens counted just yet, but United should go for the jugular from the off.
