Burnley’s best centre back Egan Riley got a straight red card against West Brom tonight in the 98th minute.

The last time he wasn’t in the Burnley squad, Burnley looked really out of shape at the back and conceded 3 goals against Preston.

Tell you what, that could cost them massively and could be crucial.

Games that he will miss:
Swansea away
Bristol City at home
Coventry away

Tough games they are, big blow for Burnley but fantastic for us.

Thought this was going to be an Anel not getting banned thread. You know, something that would actually affect us that is within our control?

"From tonight". It's a good point raised and anything stopping Burnley picking up points massively affects our season. Disappointing game for us but the draws around us and red card mentioned ease the repercussions imo.

I would have said Scott Parker also but I don’t think that’s a bad thing

Yes but they just bring in Worrall who we were heavily linked with and was probably our first choice permanent centre half option in the summer and would be our 2nd best centre half currently.

Hardly a massive downgrade

Another positive:

We went top of the league tonight.

Or are we not allowed to celebrate that one?

It feels like some are new to football. You don’t win every game. We failed to get going and still took a point. We also avoided harmful suspensions. Burnley missed a chance to leapfrog us.

In many ways you could say it was a fruitful day at the office once the hubris of us not winning every game as a procession has died down.

I agree with all of that but I totally understand people's reaction to not so much the result but the sitting back which has been a constant this season. It's become a dull watch and is partly the reason for dwindling crowds.

Now I’ve calmed down from the pretty dire performance, the truth is we have stolen a point tonight, as they deserved all 3 really. Feels worse because we conceded so late but it’s clear to everyone that we were second best.

Lost 3-2 to BC the last time Wilder got us promoted . So the 1-1 tie is an improvement. Stretch I know but boy it can be tough trying to stay positive after that performance with the piggies coming up on Sunday and thier result.

What he did was madness, kicked a WBA player seconds after the final whistle

Burnley will appeal against the red card shown to CJ Egan-Riley after both he and manager Scott Parker were sent off after the final whistle in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Burnley missed the chance to go top of the Championship as they were held to a 15th draw of the season, having seen John Swift’s fine free-kick end their run of seven consecutive clean sheets at home before Zian Flemming swiftly punished a mistake from Baggies stopper Joe Wildsmith to level moments later.

Their frustrations boiled over at the death as Egan-Riley appeared to kick William Lankshear as referee Gavin Ward was blowing the final whistle, with the defender shown a straight red card for violent conduct before his manager soon followed for his protests.

But a Clarets official confirmed they will appeal against the Egan-Riley decision, apparently given on the advice of an assistant as Ward did not see the coming together, and if successful will hope that counts in Parker’s favour when he has his own hearing.

Confused by the above - in the replay you can clearly see the ref watching the trip/kick and running towards it. Was he dismissed for something that followed after?

if they lose the appeal, would he get a 4 match ban?

It is a net positive, albeit a small one. We're a game closer to promotion and the gap to third hasn't narrowed, with no new injuries or suspensions. Burnley now have a key player out.

Can't help thinking about what could have been - but Bristol City are a very good side and could have won it. As you say, we can't win every game.

Kicking a player after play stops is a red card offence.

Kicking a player before play stops is a red card offence as well. If you are deemed to have deliberately kicked someone, it makes no difference where the ball is or whether it is in play.

If what Egan-Riley did was actually a trip (and it was), then it shouldn't be a red card. Apparently the ref didn't see it which at least means there is a chance that he will say he wouldn't have sent him off for that.

My positive take from the night was a stress free drive back to the republic of Mancunia 👍
