All they have is a big fan base being in an area dominated by egg chasers, no significant clubs within 35 miles of them hence their chosen local rivals are Man Utd 😂 and that following is from their team of the 70's they did have a good side late 90's but apart from that throughout their history they have done nowt.

Agree. We’ve played more seasons in the top flight than Leeds (63 seasons compared to their 53 seasons)
We’ve also won more domestic cups than them (4 FA cups compared to their 1 FA cup and 1 league cup)
And from 1900 to 1960 we were better also supported than them.

The media refer to them as a historical club…but their history only started from 1965….how is that historical?
They timed their run to success perfectly as colour TV started become popular from the late 1960’s.
Their early 70’s success (when they had a great team) won them admirers and new fans all around the country and it stuck.

He could have been less complimentary of course, but as others have said showing ‘respect’ to the oppo is what all managers do almost all the time, whoever they are playing.

It’s a common sporting psychology to blow smoke up the oppositions arse telling them how great they are.
Leeds are on a high after scoring a last minute winner against a rival in Sunderland, they were celebrating after the match like they’ve already won the league. Their fans expect them to play well again and win, their players are full of confidence and expect to play well against us.

Quite often when any team receives all the plaudits they lose focus and are at their weakest.

It’s a no lose situation for Wilder, if we lose he can say “nothing to worry about because I told you they were the best, so we can now focus on finishing 2nd”. Where if he wins he can congratulate his team as we go top.

Don’t worry,
Wilder will feel very confident his team can win but he’s seen an opportunity to put some pressure on Farke.

Let's be right about things here since the Revie years Leeds have been a vile club known for cheating and violence on and off the field after that they have a chequered history full of points deductions, financial irregularities and cheating it runs through their DNA. The only club in Yorkshire that comes close in dodgy dealings resides across the city in S6

Turns out this woman is mentally unstable and a stalker. Who could have guessed

There giving them confidence but similarly he could be accidentally reinforcing the message to our squad that 3 points is hopeless. It certainly felt alot like that when we turned up there earlier in the season.

I can stomach losing, I can deal with them being 3 points ahead with better GD but I can't be happy with a performance where we considered ourselves beaten before a ball has been kicked. That's exactly what it looked like earlier in the season and it's beginning to feel like that could happen again. We are on the same points as them despite a points deduction (which is our own fault, no excuses) we have every right to consider ourselves capable of winning.

Like I've said on other threads. If Leeds are terrifying us then we need to bow out of this promotion race because they will quite literally be the least of our problems next season.

Ridsdale and the ramifications after him gave me great joy in the 00’s. They are a big club though, we’d be bigger if Sheffield was a one club city and Chesterfield, Rotherham, Barnsley etc were all rugby towns like Cass, Wakefield and Fax.

But you’re ignoring the other things he said in the presser

Wilder didn't doff his cap to them, he's just bigging them up because that's showing respect. Much better than winding Leeds up and giving them extra motivation. As for Leeds as a top six PL club? At times yes, but only along with several other sides of a similar size like Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton and Man City all of which have had longer periods in the top flight than Leeds. Spurs, Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal definitely bigger and then there's the argument of who follows. Success wise Leeds would be behind Everton, Man City and Villa, possibly Newcastle too.

He seemed a bit down-beat/deflated in the presser. Giddins tried to keep the tone of the questions upbeat, but Wilder seemed like he quite fancied a moan/battle, though he softened a bit later. Maybe it was just Giddins he had an issue with. Anything said on BBCRS this week that's got his back up with them? 😅

Injuries & Absences:
  • Moore, Cannon and Hamer are "ticking along nicely. We'll give them as long as possible. We'll wait and see"
  • "Everyone else is OK", but nothing specific asked about whether that means Shackleton and Seriki are ready to make the bench on Monday
  • Adam Davies, "had a tight calf, so he's touch and go for the weekend, [but if not, then] for the QPR game", then talking about how highly rated Luke Faxon is internally

Looking ahead to Leeds:
  • "No change in our preparation and approach. Everyone in our camp is looking forward to it"
  • "Huge football club" "Top 6 premier league club" "I'm not trying to upset anybody, that's how it is" "A power house of English football" Shoutbox prediction: ✅
  • Talking about Leeds 'finding a way' against Sunderland, he praised them but also ourselves, "it's why we are 43 points above Luton Town, why we are 25 points above certain clubs"
  • Talking about the title race, "I will be astounded if any team in our division wins the next 13 games", further talking about the title not resting on this one game, for either club
  • "We are comfortable in our own skin and we'll crack on"
  • He talked a bit about "learning and reflecting" after every performance, good or bad, pointing out the Leeds and Boro away games, as well as those recently, whether we lost (Hull) or didn't play well (Pompey)
  • He mentioned how, on reflection, the setup at Leeds away wasn't the best way to win the game, but that before-hand it seemed like it would be, specifically mentioning the way Southampton beat them in the playoff final
  • "There'll be no arrogance or complacency [from us]"
  • "They've got good players and a good manager"
  • On Farke's touchline ban, he said "it's absolutely ridiculous" that he got a yellow for that. "Pashun". "If we step out of line, we deserve to be punished, but three yellow cards [is light and hard to manage over the season]", going on to also complain that the financial (club) punishments are also "ridiculous". He questioned whether the people deciding the punishments have "ever stood in the technical area"
  • On Bogle's reception at BDTBL, "I got it when I walked out at Elland Road, Jayden should get it". He didn't want him to go to Leeds but it was out of his hands. "I'll shake his hand before and after, but it's game on"
  • "My players are competitors, they're warriors, they'll want to get after Leeds on Monday night"
  • "First goal is massive, but ultimately it doesn't decide the game. Sunderland got the first goal, but Leeds kept banging the door and it came"
  • "We've got a massive task, and we respect that"

General:
  • Lot's of praise for Rob Holding "in a 2 or a 3" and how he's "slotted in well"
  • "We'd like to play the same formation (4 at the back) all the way through [a game] but sometimes we have to respond"
  • "Our team has massive personality and massive character and we didn't have it last year...and hopefully we'll get the rewards. One game at a time"
  • "I could forego results over style" but he won't
  • "These boys are showing the same character as [previous promotion teams] did"
  • "There's a genuine togetherness of the players, in the changing rooms, on the bus, having a bite to eat, at games. I listen to players who've only been here 5 minutes and what they say about the group"
  • "There are big challenges ahead of us, but ones we should embrace and enjoy"
  • "Out of a career than lasts 10/15 years, if you get three promotions that's good going. They have to embrace it, enjoy it, and really grab it. I'm enjoying watching how they overcome adversity, the togetherness", mentioning a few points in the season. "For a period of your career, you're right up against it, relegation, mid-table obscurity. When you're in this period when you've got the opportunity to achieve something, you 've got to enjoy the challenge"

Interviewers: Andy Giddins, Danny Hall, Stuart Rayner

As ever, much appreciated. But it's Giddings, not Giddins. Shame it's not Giggidy, but you can't have everything in life 😉

When did they cheat in 1989/90?

Or when they won Division One two years later?

It’s a quote from “The Damned United” allegedly made by Brian Clough to the players when he took over from Don Revie in the 1970s given their long history of “gamesmanship”. Worth both a read and a watch.

As for their title in 92, the back pass rule was introduced during the summer and Howard Wilkinson never won anything again. 🤔

Leeds are a top 6 pl club???
Historically yes, at the moment, no.

Newcastle are more of a top 6 club than Leeds at the moment.

Leeds and Newcastle are probably the biggest 1 team cities in English football, part of reason why both clubs are so well supported.

Most of the other cities (Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham etc) have at least 2 well supported teams each.

Their chequered history goes back further than Revie.
Leeds United only exist in the first place because Leeds City were forcibly disbanded for illegally paying their players during wartime.

Need to see visuals of the press conference to fully confirm cap doffing or not

Wilder was just making them complacent, they will think they can walk the win then bosh here come the Blades.

I forgot about this but I got a notification and happened to be between meetings, so...

Injuries & Absences:
  • His "yellow card stands and I have to accept this". "A few yards outside my coaching zone for 6 or 7 seconds. If someone thinks I deserve a yellow card for that...I miss the [next] game". "17 years as a professional coach and I have got 6 yellow cards. But you have to adapt [to the rules]" "I always try to be self critical, but I can't remember one game where I've been disrespectful [by celebrating]". His tone was very gracious about the punishment
  • "Having a week between games for once, really helps [recovery]"
  • "Bamford and Max Wober still out and unavailable"
  • "Solomon got a big bruise in the last game and in the last couple of days was unable to train, so it'll be a tight race for him. We hope he can return to training tomorrow or possibly Sunday, or he won't travel"

Reflections on Sunderland:
  • These games where you have to fight "are the best kind of wins. The points and the win is crucial at this time of the season for the belief of the boys"

Looking ahead to Sheff United:
  • "They are able to win very very tight games and it is a sign of quality. Chris Wilder has forged great unity. Bramall Lane is one of the most difficult place to go. We look forward to being in competition against the best sides. We are looking forward to it and have to be at our best to give ourselves a chance, but we travel in good confidence."
  • Too early to call it a title game? "Yes, so many games to play. I've heard 'massive game' already 20 times this season. It about consistency". "We beat Ipswich and we beat Leicester, and they are playing in the Premier League right now". "It's a chance to add points for both teams"
  • "Top Manager" *

General:
  • 49ers looking to take over Glasgow Rangers. Any concern or distraction? "It's not my topic. I speak just about my club. My only focus is on Leeds United and the players are the same. No distractions."
  • "We have the chance to create something special in the history of this club. In the last 20 years we have had one promotion but it was when Corona stopped the supporters seeing it. So we have a great chance"

Interviewers: Pierre S. Cliffe, Jee Mee Sarveel, & Frederick Vest. No idea

Wilder has turned to Jesus for inspiration now?

Even yesterday is history.

When you look now taking out the national stadiums etc. They have the 13th highest capacity stadium in England, granted probably not as many Irish fans going to Sunderland & Villa but they have a long way to catch up. Their catchment area similar to others in that "top 10" capacity stadium wise are one city clubs. With them dominating the '92-99 era in West Yorkshire, unless you were a die hard local fan of Bradford/Huddersfield, most of West Yorkshire were supporting Leeds or at very least had them as their "second" team whilst supporting an semi-pro club. Most of Harrogate and vast swaths of North Yorkshire (not forgetting 'boro were quite big and Hull had their day too) were captured into it. Luckily I wasn't, although I live near the airport, you have a 80/10 split of Leeds & Bradford with the remaining 10% supporting clubs like us/other randomers. It's bonkers on a Saturday match day with the early morning flight from Dublin bringing over 100s of Leeds fans although I did notice and do ask quite often where they were when Leeds were in League 1.

Rubbish, which 3 of these clubs are they historically bigger than?
Man U
Man City
Liverpool
Everton
Arsenal
Chelsea
Spurs
Villa
None of the above over the lifetime of the club. However, during their prime they were better than some of the above so historically (for a time) they were a top 6 club.
