The comments from the manager today confirms that he knows he’s either bought the wrong players for the system he wants to play or the right players that don’t suit the system….

We are 7 months into the season and I have no idea how we’re trying to set up… we may be 2nd but this will not last with these kinds of performances, we only need to see our results against the top 6 to see this.

Wilder needs to go back to basics. I’m gonna get replies saying yeah but we’re 2nd, … we may be that that’s not gonna last..

Get it sorted Wilder, play to the player’s strengths, it in this god awful attritional play that makes us look god damn ordinary.

See you all in the play offs… If any of us can be bothered to turn up.

He's just bought in 5 players and has almost as many coming back from medium term injuries.

It will take at least a few games before everyone is on it, and he now has more options than he did before, so finding that ideal mix will also take a bit of time.

Today wasn't great but we got the points on the board. In contrast, Sunderland played better than us but dropped points.

I am happy with how the weekend panned out.

Yawn

We played poorly against Sunderland at the Lane late November but managed to win. Most games since we have played badly. Somehow we have managed to stay second while playing rubbish. Can this last til the end of the season? I never leave a match early but was tempted to leave at half time.

For me the last 2 home matches have been worse than last season. We've been far worse than 2 relegation championship threatened teams.

We looked a better team when he brought on his three subs and played with pace and got people wide and beyond their defence.
We then scored so he then changed it to a back five and invited them on.
Yes we won but it was bloody hard work.
They missed two open goals and should have had a penalty, we were pedestrian and predictable.

Just tell me what we’re our tactics because I watched the game and don’t know but I do know what Portsmouth’s were

Penalty?

First five mins of the second half when one of our central defenders, think Anel got the wrong side and pushed their guy over.

Someone said that it was like watching a Blackwell team, it was other than at least he got his defenders to launch it forward quickly, we piss around with it at the back for ages and then launch it. Primarily due to the fact that none of our midfield players come short to receive the ball off our “ball playing” defenders,

We've been 2nd best at home to Plymouth, Hull and Portsmouth now

Good going that

What the hell has happened to our fanbase! When did we become so entitled? Do people not understand the size of this rebuild we are in the process of? 4 players in the starting 11 today were here last year! I think it’s 16 new players in the squad plus the likes of Peck, Seriki, Arblaster & Brooks who are only just getting started in senior Championship football.
To overhaul the squad like we have had to and be sitting 2nd is remarkable, especially considering all the injuries towards the end of 2024!
Yes it’s not good to watch at times, but results matter! It’s going to take time! Patience and prospective needed!

Great post!

"Entitled" = fans adapting to the new reality, something which never takes long to do

It's not just our fans, it's all fans. It's not just football, it's life in general, it's human nature

Our fans would behave differently if we weren't so utterly shite to watch, despite having one of the top squads and budgets in the league. We've not put on any sort of show once all season. Not once, in 31 games

It's painfully clear inside the ground that our fans are bored shitless. Surprised, pleased and baffled to be 2nd, but bored shitless. And Wilder will know that

The new reality is that we are 6 months into a major squad rebuild with around 20 players who 6 months ago had either never played for us or made very few appearances! How many teams have ever had such an overhaul and managed to play the football you are expecting to see?
In an ideal world some of the January signings wouldn’t be starting yet, but the injury situation and lack of numbers brought in in the summer have meant they’ve had to be thrown in!

It's more a noisy, entitled element of our fanbase that's rattled. They have been all season. Some of them were booing at the back of the Kop when we were 1-0 up yesterday.
Where was the booing coming from ? I’m at the back of the Kop and didn’t hear it . Mind you I’m needing hearing aids, the guy at Boots says

I’d agree, it’s the Bedwetters who are rattled. CW is doing a remarkable job. No doubt performances will improve, but the reality is we just need to get out of this league.

We've landed back where we were, at the top end of a weak championship, and this has become the new normal, with nothing about it feeling new or remarkable

Many may be surprised but even with the rebuild I thought we'd be in the mix, the top 3 in the division are exactly the 3 I expected. After we kept Hamer, Souza and Anel and finished recruiting, many more will have expected similar. It was a relief to see us settle back among the top 2, but little more

This isn't to say we've not done well to be where we are. We have, but it's not a shock, it's the new normal of the last few years so when it is also so poor to watch it's inevitable the fans will be unsatisfied and bored

I think you can appreciate that the squad has had a major overhaul and still question the tactics and performance… especially when the last 3 performances have been markedly worse than games previous this season.

Before Jan it seemed to me that the only position that we had shoehorned a player into was the left wing, we’ve signed BBD and for some reason he’s played on the right the last 2 games! Why?
We played with 2 holding midfielders at home and it was clear that wasn’t working after only 5mins! What a difference it made when Peck came on!
Can anyone tell me what position Cannon was playing?? Or Hamer for that matter!

Hopefully lessons have been learnt, with the players at our disposal we should be playing better, more cohesive, fluid attacking football than was on display the last 2/3 games ⚔️

C. We've also had "Wilder, Wilder sort it aaaht" chants during the Plymouth game (again when winning). It's just uber negative bordering on toxic at times. I go with three people and we're considering moving next year after sitting there for 20+ years. Tbf the atmosphere did pick up for a few games after the Plymouth game.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t enjoy the performance at all, and there were mistakes made in the set up which hopefully we learn from. My frustration with the fans is the mass overreaction and lack of prospective from some fans. There doesn’t need to be a hammering of players, managers etc after every performance. I walked away thinking, well that was shit but it’s 3 points and enjoyed my evening!
I expect it will be up and down in performance levels all season, it’s Championship football.
We got it right a lot in the first half of the season and I fully expect we will again.

What formation/style would you play? And what players would be in the lineup?

Spot on

This is the issue it’s nothing to do with entitlement. You’d probably call me entitled because I’m not happy with how we play.
I’d genuinely prefer to see us playing great stuff but maybe be a couple of quality players short of promotion then I’d be excited for next season thinking carry on playing like this and get those couple of additions in and we’ll piss the league! I think the mood is mute because most realise we’re playing crap, showing no signs of improvement and the bit of quality we rely on to win us a game will be gone at the end of the season if we don’t get promoted

I know you wasn’t asking me but I thought I’d have a go.
I’d play the 4231 we’ve been playing all season.

Cooper
Clarke Anel Robbo Burrows
Vini Hamer
JRS O’Hare BBD
Cannon

That would’ve been an interesting line up for yesterday’s game.
Obviously team selection is dependent on player fitness. But at least play them in their strongest positions.

I'd largely agree.

Holding over Robinson though.
Hamer needs to be central and box-to-box.

Many on here were excited for a Souza and Choudhury 2 in midfield, but it's too defensive for me. Especially at home... Although we may need it against Boro.

Massively missed O'Hare yesterday

Yes you can interchange whichever players you have a preference for or if they’re injured etc.
A team should only have one midfielder that drops deep, whether that’s Souza, Hamza or even Peck. Then you need another who will transition the play up to the attackers in the form of Hamer, Davies, Blaster or Peck… the box to box player.
Yesterday was so disjointed and unbalanced. We have the players to stretch teams now and there was countless times where we got caught too deep.
And even worse for me, whenever Burrows had the ball there was no one in front of him giving him no option but to pass back inside to Robbo. That was criminal when you’ve got BBD starting on the RW when a number of players could’ve been over on that side of the pitch.
Wilder needs to get back to basics and figure out his best starting 11… big big game on Wednesday!
