Bradford. A local derby?

I suppose it fits into the category of "Yorkshire" derby.

However, we only have one real derby. I think the media have expanded the definition over time in the attempt to write something interesting. It isn't, we're playing another side from Yorkshire but we never give them another thought apart from the games we play.

Just because 2 teams are covered by the same media outfit doesn't make it a derby for me. Matches against Barnsley, Bradford etc are no different to Colchester, Port Vale IMO, in that they are forgotten by the time the next match comes round. Whereas THE derby lives forever. I am still gutted from Boxing Day 1979.

Another aspect of this is that when we play, say, Barnsley it is a derby to them (I think) but not to us. They are really up for it and we are in just another game mode. Perhaps explains our poor record against Barnsley, Chesterfield etc.

I've got a couple of City supporters coming down from Bradford on Saturday, so I suppose I want to win a bit more than if I didn't know them, but yes, it is not and never has been a local derby.

All the above have put it perfectly. Especially like Wardonia's reply. An overused media attempt at overhyping any fixture. We only have one derby fixture, two a season sometimes. Personally I couldn't care less about Leeds, another fixture that we're supposed to get excited about

I've always considered a match to be a derby if it's between two teams that have overlapping catchment areas. For example, if you're a north Notts blade, you'll be in an area where there are Forest fans so a Forest game would be a derby, same with Barnsley, Chesterfield etc. And if you're a Donny based Blade, Leeds is a derby.

I just don't like the idea of southerners who know no better thinking that Bradford is close to sheffield..
Thankfully southerners don't know where Rotherham is .

Not true at all.

If we were in the Championship with Barnsley and at the start of the season you asked 100 Blades fans whether they would rather win both matches against Barnsley and lose both matches against Ipswich or vice versa they would all choose the former.

That's a sweeping generalisation if ever I heard one.

Some sweeping generalisations are true.

;)

If one of those Blades was my mate who is from Colchester, but whose mother is from Sheffield, he would profoundly disagree with you. Having being brought up in Colchester, he has an irrational dislike of the bumpkins from Portman Rd, almost as much as a Blade would despise swfc.

Everybody knows its just a small town in Sheffield

The only extra feeling this generates is "bollocks, the train'll be even fuller than normal".

It's not a derby cos there's no rivalry. There's no doubt rivalry between Ipswich and Norwich, but who cares if we beat Bradford or not except for the 3 points?

True but that doesn't prove it's a bigger game to them than it is to us. Take Chesterfield, they see us as rivals because there are quite a lot of Blades born and bred in Chesterfield. There can't be many Chesterfield fans in Sheffield apart from the ones that have moved to Sheffield so they're not rivals for our support. If you're born and bred in Sheffield it's very unlikely you'll be a Chesterfield fan (unless you're dad's from Chessy and he makes you go to the game with him).
