Not so much an old picture, but a picture of an old place. Love Conisborough castle, really interesting and worth a visit. When my American wife and me went there a few years back we sent a picture of her standing in front of the tower to the young granddaughter. When we were back in the States, we went to pick her up from school and all the kids came running up to the Mrs. saying 'are you the lady who lives in the castle and drinks pigs blood'? Kind of right as we'd talked about black pudding as well in an earlier conversation.

Out of the mouths of babes, and all that...

I doubt the castle looked like that in 1700. The model would appear to be from its heyday of the 12th century. The castle was already a ruin by the time of the Civil War.

Exactly. I like the pictures of old and new on that site but their dates are usually complete nonsense.

Used to go at least once a year on a school trip. The highlight was always seeing if anyone had nicked the 'Butt Hole Road' sign in Conisbrough on the way 😄

I've always liked boxing, some of my earliest memories are of sitting round the wireless with my dad and grandad listening to the fights. I knew fighters died in the ring but the first real exposure I had to it was this lad and his sad demise. I followed the build up to the fight and thought he had a real chance of outboxing Pintor but sadly it wasn't to be. The final punch still sends shivers down my spine. After 6 weeks in a coma he died and it's one of the few things that still chokes me up, the thought of him all those miles from home and his family.

Anyway, some years back I was working in South Wales so took a detour to go and pay my respects to The Merthyr Matchstick and I'm glad I did. The days before mobile phones so no pictures sadly, these are stock ones.

RIP Johnny Owen, legend.

If you can on BBC IPlayer in the US, there is a documentary that has just come out about Jonny Owen.

We did the double header school trip: Roche Abbey in the morning, the castle in the afternoon.

Both well worth a visit of course.

When I was in my early 20’s I had a sheepskin coat like that, went to a match in it once, had to pick my ticket up from the office, when I came out some kids came up to me and asked me for my autograph so I signed my name, had a little chuckle when they were walking off looking at my signature(I used to practice it as a kid for when I was a footballer) and saying to each other “who’s that”? Showing their parents and them saying “ I don’t know either”

Budgie, what a cock bird. 🤤
War'e a goalie or an entertainer?

A bit of both really .

Whilst he is not up there with the best keepers we ever had he was by no means one of the worst and on his day , capable of making some very good saves .

The thing I remember him most for though , is that after a home match he would often emerge from the South Stand entrance into the car park dressed in his trademark overcoat and proceed to give his opinions on our performance including his own to anyone who would care to listen , delivered in a typically flamboyant and often humorous manner.

I know of no other player from any club who has ever done that and is one of the reasons why I have always had a soft spot for him .
