Heard he's signing today.

If correct, he could certainly be a good option at Clough's disposal.

I've just had a quick look at his career record, over on Wiki, and it's a mixed bag really.

He's been around for a fair while, and has clocked-up a lot of clubs on his CV over the years. At times he has been exceptional and has won 'player of the season' and on other occasions has been moved on very quickly by other managers, no doubt because he wasn't scoring enough?

Never prolific, but steady. We shall see if Clough can do anything with the players obvious talents, if this transfer rumour is indeed true.

Source/Quote/Link? Or is this a 'this Jim bloke who drinks at the rutland told me' carry on? Don't see this being likely as Nigel is very insistent he will only bring in players who are better than we already have. I'm sure he doesn't view Billy Paytner in this category.

With a name like Billy Paynter you would have thought he would be much more suited to a stint at the Rust Bowl in S6. Lee Strappon would have been in his element for that one.

Based on what I saw of him at the Vale, admittedly some time ago, I'd take him over our current number 9, more mobile and doesn't need four sitters to scuff one over the line.

Might not be the most attractive of signings but he did a job for Doncaster last year and was a part in gettin em promoted so I'm willing to give him a deal til the end of the season to bang a few in for us hopefully. Tell you something else, he is the type of player of would work nicely with Jose, Murphy and Flynn too so would compliment what we already have.

I hope you're right!! But can't help feeling underwhelmed.

Scores goals at this level but clearly is not Championship standard.

Let's be honest, he can be a very poor player and still be a big step forward up front.

Let's hope that this level of signing is a sign of FFP, and not the new owners ambitions.

Signed till the end season is fine. I'd judge the transfer policy of the club in the summer not in January when we are still hovering round the relegation places of league 1.

Listen he might not be the bigger, better name that some wanted but he is more than effective at this level and will do a job for us until the end of the season no doubts what so ever and he is technically the righttype of player to fit what we already have.

He was pivotal in Donny's promotion and this video shows some of the stuff he did for them last year in this league, he's more than good enough and in all fairness a very decent signing giving us great options.

I hope he's going to apologise to Tony McMahon for his violent assault on him last season ;)
