He can play there though as proven last time when he came in for Norwood( Slightly different shape this time but the idea will be the same) . Agree he is a difference maker, another set piece taker as well to add to that
Yeah but Oli wasn't really a defensive midfielder either. Deep playmaker type. Too slow to be covering the defence or winning loads of possession back.

Don’t think we could have afforded him.
According to reports weren’t we quoted £20 mill transfer and £35K a week salary, that’s right at the top of our limit
But as Wolves were also in for him, we might have been involved in an auction, so we end up being asked for more.
Good player but outside our price range.
Or perhaps - was … out of our price range ?

Absolutely. One of the worst transfer decisions this club ever made. Should have been sorted when we played them in the semi final and been the first signing that summer. He would be my first choice for midfield in this window.
I don't think for a minute we had the budget to make that deal, and there was the rumoured relegation clause which he didn't want which would have also scuppered it.
If we can get a deal now, then it's the right time.

I think he would jump at the chance to join us now.

I think he would have loved to come then. That seemed to be clear, to me at least, when he went to Wolves, but you I think he probably signed the right contract for him financially at the time.
If it's not going to work out for him at Wolves, then I still think he made the right choice, but hopefully we're a solid option for him if he's moving on.

Couldn’t afford him, Man City needed him as leverage for a wolves player and we insisted on stupid contract clauses. On a personal level he would have probably wanted to come back. But from a business point of view we never stood a chance of getting him.

I think we'd have got him at the end of the window instead of McAtee, probably with an option to buy. Allegedly he was at the Palace game wasn't he.

I don't think the issues/ frustrations with the deal for Choudhury are there anymore.
Doyle more than capable of covering the ground, especially in a 2 . A Doyle Souza partnership would be ridiculous in this league.
I liked Doyle more when he was deeper, same with Souza and also Peck now... We'd have a lot of decent options and flexibility if we got Doyle or Charles, more so than Choudhury, but Choudhury could run things from deeper

I'm sure I said in the previous post we couldn't afford him, and the clauses aren't stupid they protect us from getting into even more hot water when were relegated.
Could you imagine the state we would have been in if they weren't in place when we were relegated when we had gambled with the transfers and had Berge, Ramsdale, McBurnie plus all the old guard with new Premier league deals too. Crazy for us not to have them given our financial backing.

My impression of Choudhury is that he is more of a Souza type, admittedly I don't know a lot about him. Doyle, Peck, and Tom Davies are all a bit more box to box. but great options whoever the new CM will be

You put a lower transfer release fee in there instead of 60% relegation wage cut. No one is saying keep him on same salary if we got relegated, but our hardball approach with silly clauses will have put off a lot of players. Moot point anyway, as we didn’t have the £10m+ required to sign him. At least that we can agree on

They only paid a small fee from recollection as make weight to Nunez deal. That low purchase price should be reflected in sale price

Im pretty sure Doyle was going to come to us. Didnt he change his Insta pic to him wearing a Blades shirt
The sticking point IIRC was that Doyle and his agent wouldnt accept a wage reduction if we got relegated

The transfer of Neves from Wolves to Man City also put a spanner in the works

The relegation clause is a vital one and one we should keep in any contract we do with a player.

Correct, he refused to sign because of the relegation clause. Don't know if the new owners will scrap the clause if we go up but it will be a big risk

One thing's for sure, if he managed to get Wolves to agree not to put a relegation clause in then there's a good chance they'll be desperate to sell him in the summer, before he becomes the English Benito Carbone

Fun fact, the English Benito Carbone would be Benedict Cole. If we want to sign him we could do worse than perusing this racy little novel...Screenshot_20250124_171509_Google.webp

What a load of click bait….. Manager addresses Dunne situation, not our manager, QPR manager and starts by saying QPR manager refused to be drawn on speculation linking Dunne to Blades. Quotes Football Woks as source who probably were using AI and picked up Dunne interest on here.

Can see this being a Chinese whisper rumour.

Aye
Stuff about Doyle later on - although your point about ‘bait’ still relevant

I read this morning Wolves manager wants more units in midfield.....slight opening of the door? Or are we all in on Hamza and need to prioritise defenders now?

Think Choudhury has been number one midfield target all window. If we get him I think that’s us done.

Will give two holding options in Souza and Choudhury and two smaller players who should be more comfortable on the ball in Davies and Peck.

Can go with full on shield option or ball player and holding side by side. Hopefully with Hamer centrally ahead.

We won't sign another CM.
We already have Choudhury, Souza, T Davies & Peck... and Hamer could find himself central with the arrival of BBD.

We've also got 4 loan players in assuming Choudhury arrives today (JRS, Gilchrist & BBD the others).
Presumably we want to keep the last matchday loanee spot open for a CB.

we have to give peck a break hes a great prospect but is out on his feet hes had to play that many games even with choudray coming in we need davies back fully fit and im hoping hamer is moved more central thats where he can do most damage but with these new incomings at least we have options now for the run in

I'd take Doyle in a heartbeat but we're now loaded with defensive midfielders and our new CF will require some creativity to show what he can do. I've always been impressed with Chekvetedze at Watford. Exciting and creative, something we're currently missing.

Whilst hardly a resounding endorsement the Sunderland Echo is (marginally)more reputable than its Sheffield ‘sister’ publication
