The Blades went back to the top of the league in the topsy turvy race for promotion after a dramatic evening in South Wales. United were wretched in the first half and the home side scored early through Bianchini’s reaction header. The Swans created a number of other opportunities as United struggled to make any impact in the game. In truth, the Blades were lucky to go in only a goal behind. Three substitutions were made and Wilder had his team out warming up 5 minutes before the game restarted. The impact was instant as one of the changes Seriki set up Brewster to convert. Soon after Darling’s wild lunge on the United man saw him sent off and the game had completed turned around in a matter of minutes. The turnaround was complete when Campbell was brought down clumsily by Key and Burrows converted from the spot for the second consecutive game. The only sour note was a yellow card for Gus Hamer leading to him being suspended for the next two games. However, United showed again their resilience and fight to turn around another lacklustre away day in a game reminiscent of the Bristol City win in terms of the score and the numerical advantage that helped shape the victory.

United were without Tom Davies and Andre Brooks took his place but also to bring in Rhys Norrington Davies for Sam McCallum with Harrison Burrows playing further forward. Gus Hamer was still played wide left with Burrows inside seemingly as United were extremely patched up in the centre of the park. New signing Ben Brereton Diaz was on the bench. Swansea made two changes from the side that was well beaten at rivals Cardiff on Saturday lunchtime. Former Blade Kyle Naughton was on the bench.

The game began with Swansea on the front foot and Cullen tested Cooper after only 2 minutes. Hamer tried to respond but went for goal and could only hit the side netting after he robbed Key. However, the Blades were behind after only 7 minutes when O’Hare committed a stupid foul. The free kick was whipped in and Cabango got in front of Gilchrist and Cooper had to spring to his right to push it out. Nobody from United reacted and BIANCHINI turned the ball home from close range with his head.

Brewster had a half chance when the ball fell but hit his man. Swansea were on the front foot and moving it forward quickly with Tymon having a low shot saved by Cooper and then nearly getting in soon after on the right-hand side. Norrington Davies was booked for a cynical pull back on his man as the home side continued to target him and the left-hand side.

Robinson headed over in a rare attack as United won a corner but Swansea were soon back on the attack and Ahmedhodizc had to make a tackle. Swansea were controlling the midfield battle and forcing United back and it should have been 2-0 when Peart Harris got away from Norrington Davies and the United defender tried to pull him back. The forward stayed on his feet and tried to get his shot away and Cooper pounced on the ball. The Blades defender was lucky to escape without further censure in terms of a penalty and red card. Peck then stopped and there was an appeal for another penalty as it continued to be one way traffic.

Swansea broke again and Cullen’s shot drifted just wide. United’s wretched first half was compounded when Hamer brought his man down, after Norrington Davies lost out again, and he was booked – leading to a two-match suspension for the key man – who went down with a knock but was deemed fit to continue.

Swansea probably could scarcely believe how bad United had been and sensed the kill and had a further chance as the ball dropped just before half time but the Blades hacked clear. Hamer tried a long-range effort but Vigouroux had been a virtual spectator with the home side completely dominant and deserving of a bigger lead than the narrow one they went into the break with.

As expected Wilder made changes and it was three of them with Seriki, McCallum and Campbell on for Gilchrist, Norrington Davies, and Brooks. Wilder had his side out warming up almost 5 minutes before Swansea re-emerged and clearly was not happy with what he had seen. Hamer seemed to be moved inside into midfield with Burrows back to left back and McCallum on the left side of midfield. United’s start and response was instant. Seriki got down the right-hand side advancing past his man before his pull back was only stabbed clear by Darling. BREWSTER was on it and his shot was too hot for Vigouroux to handle and went over the line. The striker celebrated in front of the Blades fans as his teammates scooped up the ball with the intent clear to complete the turnaround.

Only minutes later, the game was further turned on its head. Brewster got to the ball first in midfield and Darling’s tackle was high, late and badly mistimed. There was a melee with players piling in after before referee Whitestone brandished a red card to the defender who did not look entirely shocked at the decision and trooped off.

United now were looking to complete the turnaround and Seriki’s impressive play continued as he surged down the right again and pulled it back perfectly for McCallum but as Brewster left it for him, the sub blazed high over the bar. It was a great opportunity and bad miss.

Peck unwisely dived in and was cautioned before Ronald was also late soon after on Ahmedhodzic, and he too was booked. The game had been a feisty affair and the Swansea fans were frustrated that the referee was not producing further cards for United players but Ronald in particular was often throwing himself to the floor. Naughton came on for Cullen on the hour as Swansea tried to find a way back in a game they had been dominating but were now second best.

The fans frustration was not helped on 68 minutes when a penalty was awarded for the Blades. In truth it was an easy award and they could have no complaints. The ball from Hamer sent Campbell away and Key got the wrong side of his man and upended the striker.

BURROWS took it and sent Vigouroux the wrong way and scored his second successive penalty in as many games. United were now in front and with a man advantage would have been confident to complete the job.

Brereton Diaz came on for Brewster but it was Campbell’s superb skill that took him away from a defender as he flicked it inside him and between his legs. His cross was just away from O’Hare. The next period saw it become stop start and a series of fouls followed as Wilder asked for calm not wanting to give the referee chance to even things up.

The Blades had a great opportunity to put the game save as McCallum played it through and Campbell was in. He opted to come back inside and his shot was pushed away from the keeper before O’Hare and then Burrows had chances to convert the rebound but the latter smashed over.

Swansea started to have a better spell of possession as United became sloppy with the ball and were guilty of going too long. A ball in from Grimes evaded Ronald and then Ahmedhodzic brought the Dutchman down but United were able to clear the free kick. Parker came on for Peart Harris in the 87th minutes but United had another chance to break and finish the job but Hamer’s pass was poor as he looked to find Brereton Diaz.

There was 6 minutes of stoppage time to be played but United spent most of this time in better control and saw it out well with Burrows keeping it smartly in a corner. Blacker came on for O’Hare and won two headers as United managed to prevent Swansea from even getting the ball into the United third and the final whistle signalled another win for Wilder’s men in a game that had a bit of everything but ultimately the three points will be all that matters.

United – The cliché game of two halves had to be applied to describe an odd night that sums up the Championship. United went from absolutely dire and barely doing anything right, to a different side that suddenly showed some fight, attacking intent and took the game to Swansea. In the end, the win over the whole game was maybe not deserved but the reality is Swansea did not take their chances and make their domination count and the Blades somehow stayed in the game whether by luck or judgement and then came out and took the game to the visitors. We had as many chances, if not more, than them in the second half but missed a fair few and they were still in it at the end.

First half was our worst 45 minutes of the season and by some distance. We obviously have had some off games where we have squeaked results and at Leeds/Boro played two decent sides but did not really turn up at all and looked sluggish, slow and were slow to the ball. It was really shocking how one sided it was. Swansea badly out of form and had been hammered in the South Wales derby came out and totally took the game to us, scored early, won every battle and looked up for it. Our team, almost to a man looked totally disinterested and almost like they did not expect to get anything and seemed to be almost going through the motions. The two full backs were dire and will get a lot of the focus, especially RND but not sure anyone dud much right, with O’Hare really poor, the midfield not getting into the game and standing off and us losing all the battles. We were so bad. The team selection with RND, Burrows inside and Brooks did not work but even with that you cannot legislate for basic stuff in terms of not running, winning tackles and competing. On top of that, our passing was shocking when we did had it and every touch seemed to come off us. They exploited our left side and really we should have took RND off as it was painful to watch him – he looks done sadly at this level – he cannot run anymore.

The second half we came out, were warming up early and then roared into them with Seriki leading the charge and we got level instantly and then the red card. Just like that, the game had completely turned around. We then had more chances and McCallum missed a big one before we get the penalty and you think we could go and get more. We did have more opportunities and suddenly were cutting them apart but did not take them. The final 10-15 minutes was odd, as we started going long, sitting back and committing a number of daft fouls. I was convinced the ref would even it up with another red or penalty and felt we got a bit daft, although a few of their lads were throwing themselves down to the floor. They did not really create too much though and then we managed stoppage time really well.

In truth, it was a messy performance and we cannot keep giving teams starts – we have done this at a few away grounds and mostly get away with it but we have to start games better and impose ourselves rather than having to keep react. We really could and should have been out of the game but to be fair Wilder did what he had to and clearly gave them a…erm…talking to and the team responded. As much as I can be critical of the first half, I have to praise the reaction and the impact of all the subs that came on. Campell and Seriki were particularly good but many others players did lift their game after the first half debacle. We started to open them up (even before the red – admittedly it came early) and create chances and we had so many opportunities to finish it. The first half performance will still be remembered by Wilder though where the team and a number of individuals simply did not turn up. He needs to ensure that does not happen again (as do they but a few I think may not get a chance for while).

It is another win, even if there were concerns and we looked a long way off a promotion side for big swathes of the game but we also showed the quality and moments to show why we are right up there. I think we need players back to stay up there as at teams a middling team like Swansea ran through us. I do not think we will see RND again and hopefully likes of BBD, Rak Sakyi and Souza will all be able to come in and give us more options. I still think we need a big centre half and you can see why he wants an experienced right back (Seriki giving him real food for thought though). Hamer will be missed but we are playing two poor sides so maybe they are not bad ones to miss? With 8 days after Hull, we need to just get a result Friday and then hopefully we will have a much stronger squad with more players coming in and being back (he may have a few on the bench).

Overall, just delighted to get the three points. Leeds and Burnley fans will have watched it and thought how did they win that but then seen Leeds (and Sunderland) get wins at Swansea from similar situations where Swansea had the game won. They are an incredibly poorly coaches and naive team and in the end United took advantage.

Ratings:

Cooper 5/10 – Thought he was not his best tonight. The goal was not his fault. Some may argue he should push it out further or wider but from such close range he just did well to save it and needed help. I just thought he made several poor decisions with the ball and did not look the commanding keeper he has been in other games and he seemed as jittery as others were. Not helped by the shambles in front of him. Second half was protected really well.

Gilchrist 3/10 - Really poor. RND will get the bulk of the criticism but he was not great either. Gave way too much space down his side, lost the ball and on the goal it seemed to be his man. He was poor on the ball and often just passed it to no one. He looked sluggish and really off the pace as they kept coming down both sides. I am still yet to be convinced by him at all. I do not think he is a centre half too. Can see why we have been linked with right backs. I would give Seriki a run even if there is defensive concerns.

Norrington Davies 1/10 – Appalling and one of the worst individual displays from a Blade I have seen in some time. He got beat time and time again, lost the ball, was badly positioned, and looked so slow it was painful to watch. Maybe did not get much help (Hamer etc) but he looked like he cannot defend, struggles to even control the ball and cannot run. He looks done at this level. Maybe the injuries have done for him but he is way off the standard of the Championship on the games we have seen this season. He was awful against Cardiff but even worse today. Lucky not to get sent off and he really should be nowhere near the first team on his current output which shows he is not at the level we need. He looked a promising player a few years ago but miles off that now. The decision to give him a three-year contract is looking totally bonkers.

Ahmedhodzic 5.5/10 – First half he was slow at times to react but still the best of an awful back line. He at least got his foot in a few times. Second half better and looked more assured. He did commit a few stupid fouls though but I thought was our best defender tonight.

Robinson 5/10 – Got drawn into the sub-standard first half stuff but again not helped by two poor full backs and no midfield protection. They were coming at us all the time and hard to stem the tide. Missed two good headed opportunities first half with the rare attacks we had. Did better second half in the sense he came onto the ball and started to win his battles more.

Hamer 5/10 – Mixed bag. Some neat touches and pieces of skill and he was often involved in our breaks and better attacks – he made the penalty incident. However, he was incredibly frustrating with another daft booking (the foul after was a dive from their man and would have been ridiculous to have been a red) and he was very wasteful on the ball. Some easy passes he just telegraphed and we had chances to finish it and he made poor choices. There were usual flashes but thought he was quite frustrating tonight.

Peck 5/10 – As above – some decent bits – particularly second half but felt we looked so open first half and the whole defence was run at with no one shielding or getting hold of it. We looked full stretch. Not helped with Burrows playing with him (not sure he is a central midfielder). Better second half but again some heart in mouth moments (the silly lunge and piled in after the red -good to see him sticking up for our players but needs to be careful). He did win a few tackles/headers as we saw the game out but we need Souza back and he will need a rest soon – if Davies gets back in a few weeks/and or we sign another midfielder.

Burrows 6/10 – Gets an extra mark for the winner and another cool penalty. In general play he was not in the game first half at all and seemed like he did not know quite where to be positionally. They ran off us and just controlled the midfield and ball. Much better when he was in his natural position and became more involved and influential. Smart play at the end to help us see it out.

O’Hare 4/10 – Really poor tonight. He has been excellent recently but off it for the most part this evening. He set the tone with a daft foul that led to the goal. He also was not sure in possession and not sure he had much of the ball at all. Just seemed to pass him by and not quite the same work ethic we have seen and they had an easy out all first half. Bit better after the break but not sure he was hugely involved, even in the numerous attacks we did have.

Brewster 7/10 – Maybe our best and most influential starting player in the sense that he was at least busy-ish first half and had a few shots and moments -with little service. Did think he did not give us an out ball though and was quite static and we had no one to hit or find. After the break he came out and scored an instinctive finish and then involved in the red card. Was lively on other breaks we had and he did some good things. I have been as critical of him as anyone but with players coming in, he staked a claim to be involved still in coming weeks. Fair play to him. He was a big part of the win tonight.

Brooks 3.5/10 – Not in the game at all. Just seemed to lack heart and when given the ball he came inside or passed it off. We need a consistent run of games from him but he plays well a game and then does little. Needs to get involved and not be so passive.

Subs –

McCallum 5/10 – He missed the big chance and a few other poor choices but he did give us some energy in the middle and was at least able to get his foot in, use the ball to move it on and he set up the chance for Campbell too. He was frustrating with some of his decisions but he was all action and made sure we had a presence down the left, an area they had caused all sorts of problems first half.

Campbell 8/10 – High mark for a sub but he looked superb when he came on. Ran in behind, always playing on the last man. Got in 2 or 3 times on goal, won the penalty, had another saved (maybe should have scored) and some incredible skill on the touchline. Held it up, brought others into play and just a completely different outlet as he linked with Hamer, O’Hare, Seriki etc. Should start Friday – maybe with Brewster or one down the left with Hamer out.

Seriki 8/10 – Another big impact off the bench. Within a minute he is driving down the right and making a goal. Made another chance too with a lovely run and pick out. So many times, he gave us that outlet and ball down that side. Few times he went down looking for fouls and a few moments defensively he needed to be tighter near the end but I am nit picking, his impact was excellent and helped turn the game. Him and Campbell made a huge difference.

Brereton Diaz 5/10 – Not really in the game that much and looked a bit rusty. Few times it came off him or he rushed with a pass but a couple of decent link ups.

Blacker – Only on for a few minutes but won a few headers as we saw out the win.

Manager: Wilder 2/10 first half / 8/10 second half – So 6/10- maybe 7/10 for end result! – He got the team selection wrong and also who played where – should have in my opinion and easy with hindsight played Hamer inside, McCallum left midfield and Burrows left back. He finally did this at half time. However, even with RND’s poor performance and us not having any real shape to the side and players in unnatural areas/positions – he still cannot legislate for us being so poor in all aspects of the game. We had no intensity on or off the ball and looked like we had been on a 20-hour coach journey never mind 4.5 hours or whatever it takes (probable got there last night too?). We were so sluggish and they could have put the game away. The touch and passing was awful but we did not get close to them or engage in any kind of contest. We sat off all half. Second half totally different. The subs changed the game but the whole team played further up the field, got into them, and started to push them back. We saw a different team and approach and they had to worry about us. We made changes in personnel and who played where but it was the approach to a man of the side in terms of what we did, with and without the ball. Must be frustrated he has to demand a response from HT rather than the off but we got away with it in the end.

Swansea – Had an up and down season where you think they are flirting with the playoffs but then they have a few defeats and end up back in mid table. Been on a poor recent run and before today the gap between 6th and them and 3rd bottom and them was almost identical- pinning them as stuck firmly in mid table. They continue to stick to their principles of playing it out but have had some exciting games against Leeds and Sunderland with a fair few goals but then take those away and they have a low scoring record and relatively low record of conceding (30/33). They have won 9, drew 7 and lost 12 which shows how poor the league is, that they still somehow were 13th (now 15th).

Luke Williams continues to have them playing patient football and trying to draw teams out but it is having mixed results. Other games (not today) it has been so frustrating to watch.

They lack the players and ability to do this and beat teams consistently – especially the better teams and do lack experience and quality in the side. They will not go down as there are so many bad teams but will not threaten the top 6. I think they will finish around where they are (maybe a bit lower even) as they are quite predictable to play against. Oddly today they went forward quicker and started the game with a high tempo, got a goal and could/should have had more. They played it down the sides and did not mess around as much and be patient. It was more back to front and quicker. This caused us problems and they exploited our left side. They did miss some decent chances and a few went just past the post and maybe should have had a penalty.

You sensed they may regret it, as surely we could not be as bad after the break and so it proved. The defending for the goal was not great and too easy for Seriki to get down that side as we caused them problems in exactly the same spot on the pitch. The Darling tackle I am not sure was malicious but was really clumsy and so high and could have been a bad injury. After this they lost their head a bit and we came through them and eventually got the penalty – another moment of madness. They will protest at the referee’s handling of the game and maybe the big decisions went for us but not sure you can argue hugely with either? After this United missed chances and to be fair they had a bit of a go at the end but got caught up in trying to get the player count evened out. Ronald was disgraceful as he was chucking himself to the ground (two on Hamer and Ahmedhodzic where he was barely touch was embarrassing). In the end they did not create much and the ten men run out of steam. It’s no co-incidence they have had a bit of a go and been well in games against the top sides at home, but lost them all. They are not clinical enough in both boxes and do not capitalise when on top and always give teams chances. They must be so hard to watch as seem to conspire to throw goals and games away despite playing quite well for big chunks of games. They do need some experience (surprised Allen stayed on the bench) but will continue to frustrate their fans unless they show some calmness in games and some structure to ensure they can see games out.

Opponent Man of the Match – Peart Harris was non-existent at the Lane but caused RND all sort of problems down that side and was their most threatening player in that first half where they dominated. Too honest staying on his feet when RND grabbed him. Ronald showed some flashes, away from his attempts to get our players sent off and Grimes put a few decent balls in.

Opponent Weak link – Has to be Darling in that he cost them the game really. Maybe we go on and win anyway but he made it so hard for them with almost an entire half left. Tymon was bad at the Lane and second half he really struggled with Seriki down this side who just went past him like he was not there.

Referee/Officials – Dean Whitestone. Thought it was a tough game to referee as both teams’ kind of lost control. Sometimes it is easy to blame the ref when there was a lot of yellow cards but many of them were deserved I felt! Both teams were quite clumsy and not helped by an awful pitch, were diving in and giving him no option. I do feel, despite that, he made it a bit stop start. I have just looked and he only booked 3 a piece actually – it felt more. First half he could have given them a penalty but when a player stays on their feet refs often don’t. I would have been annoyed if it was not given though. The red card I felt was very high and often when teams have a melee and all gather round pushing and shoving it often makes the ref’s mind up! It is like it must have been bad for that reaction. United players were sticking up for Brewster to be fair after so many bad injuries but will probably get another fine but I was ok with this reaction here. It was high and late and sort of raked down his shin so can understand it. It was more clumsy but he did not grumble much. After this there were a few poor ones both ways but he then got in a spell where he was booking players from both sides and he did lose a bit of control (as did the players). The penalty for us was an easy one (the two hand balls by the way they screamed for on Peck and Hamer were not – first one deflected onto him – the second he chested). I was convinced he would even it up and when Hamer was penalised (for doing nothing and the player dived) I thought here we go! I did not like the way a few of their players were throwing themselves down to be honest. The home fans may feel they got the wrong end of the decisions but the two big ones he got right – and lots of other appeals for second yellows on ours were a bit desperate. The only major one they could protest was the one on RND but granted this would have made it 2-0 possibly and us having a man less so it was a big moment and if I was a Swansea fan writing this report I would not be happy.

Thanks Deadbeat agree with all of that. First half was appalling; second half more like. I think Wilder max mark of 5 as the first half set up was awful

Accurate report DB. Its another scruffy win. Tactically inept first half tactically sound second. Tonight emphasised how important it is to get a quality midfield player in, possibly 2 if Davies and Souza continue to have injury problems. Burrows poor against Cardiff in the middle and tonight again got caught in possession too much. Different player when moved to his more natural position. I understand the managers desire to have the RND second leg play off semi final performance where he kept Johnson in his pocket version tonight but he doesn't exist anymore. We really have a weakness against pace down the left hand side without a pacy LB, LCB and Left footed midfield player. Thought McCallum added the balance to LM when he came on. Agree thats where he should start against Dull on Friday.

Hope tonight Seriki has proved to CW that he is a player who should feature much more than he does. CW seemed to play down his contribution for the rest of the season this week but thats the second game after Sunderland at Home he's single handedly turned around a game in our favour. He has all the attributes to be an EPL player he has to be given more game time imo as very few teams have a player of his physique and rapid pace at RB. His direct approach is refreshing and negates the need for inverted wingers when he's on the pitch. Brewster benefited tonight from having a player going down to the bye line and crossing first time into the box.

Campbell has been a huge miss as his 2 latest cameos have proven, along with Seriki the 2 most influential players in the second half. We are crying out for a Souttar replacement. The goal conceded showed how weak we are in the air at the back again.

No game in this division is easy as Swansea proved. Any down turn in performance and you get hurt. We have 2 more games before the end of the transfer window and neither will be easy with the injuries and suspensions we are carrying.

I am shocked we have not signed a centre half as that is surely the priority?

I'd say that and midfield as we are getting run through.

Hopefully these areas will be addressed in the next week

The only major one they could protest was the one on RND but granted this would have made it 2-0 possibly and us having a man less so it was a big moment and if I was a Swansea fan writing this report I would not be happy.

If you, me and half this forum can call the selection and formation that should have started then you seriously have to wonder what was going through Wilders head today. Another one of his bizarre brain fart line ups. Good report.

I am shocked we have not signed a centre half as that is surely the priority?

I'd say that and midfield as we are getting run through.

Hopefully these areas will be addressed in the next week
CB replacement should have been first through the door imo. We are riding our luck at the moment. Omobamidele and Shea Charles who can drop into a back 3 would make this transfer window one that only Carlsberg does, but unlikely.

I do appreciate your detailed match reports. As another poster alluded, it was a repeat of the Bristol City result, which we also didn’t deserve the 3 points if we’re honest.
Salvaged by Wilder realising his mistake, and an improved 2nd half performance.

The first half emphasised how much there is left in the tank for some of these players. At least Hamer gets an enforced rest/rotation. Maybe O’Hare should join him? Pushing tired players out of position seems to have reached a peak?

Still, Wilder managed to rescue it second half with substitutions and reorganisation. A better club would have punished us for that shocking first half.

Can’t argue with any of that and the marks were pretty much spot on.

RND should not appear for us again this season, if he does we have had a major injury crisis. Personally I think he is done at Championship level, if we could sort out a quick loan to league one or two before the end of January it might be best for all concerned to see if he’s still got it at all at Football League level. As mentioned the decision to give him a 3 year contract in the summer was baffling, especially as it had been sort of leaked in the spring that he had been ear marked as one who was being released once his contract expired. It seems he was given a contract about the time Wilder was talking about having “Culture Carriers” at the club so Wilder clearly likes him and maybe he does have a strong personality around the dressing room .. however that’s no good if his legs have gone from the injuries.. at the moment he looks a complete liability on the pitch.

The score for O'Hare is a bit harsh. Although poor in the 1st half, he wasn't the worst and like the rest he was much better in the 2nd half. Yet again, his workrate was absolutely tireless.

I would also mark Brooks lower, as he was all over the place.

Other than that, I can't disagree.

It’s games like this and Watford that could well decide our season.

Hopefully the next few days can mean that for the remainder of the season we can avoid having to play scratch teams with players out of position and filling in.

Hamer having an enforced rest might not be a bad thing.

I’d be tempted to put BBD in his position and go at the next two teams. He’s not come to sit on the bench.

Notwithstanding Cannon imminent, BBD and Campbell would seem a couple of very good attacking options, especially if Souza and JRS are also due back. Those with O’Hare should mean the front 6 is pretty strong for the next few games even without Hamer and possibly Davies (as well as Arblaster). Having a chance to rotate Peck is also going to be a good thing. His emergence has been impressive overall but being able to keep him fresh will also be a plus.

We’ve been good at putting away teams like this. We have on field points 4 more than Leeds and 6 more than Sunderland and 7 more than Burnley. This is despite losing to 4 of the top 6 already. Good thing I suppose is we only have 4 matches left against top 6 teams and 3 of these are at home. Unlike the Burnley game you’d hope we are not bereft of 7 to 9 players when we do play them.

In fact we only have those 4 games left against the current top 8. Hopefully our good form continues against the ‘rest’. This should also be helped by the fact that 10 of the remaining 18 now are at home. The average placing of the teams we play away is 15.375.

Brief addendum; Bianchini was on loan at Châteauroux a couple of seasons back and he was absolute garbage. I was amazed he turned up in the Championship and then he’s gone and not her his first goal against us!

Like flicking a switch at HT wasn't it? As soon as we equalised I expected victory. Saw it out nicely at the death too. When we had some of our better players on we were simply a better side.

I sometimes wonder what we'd get from Seriki were he to start every week, because when he comes on, he changes the game down the right side. Takes the game to them.

Poorest half of the season by a country mile. Poor old RND. I suspect a less honest striker could have won a penalty in that situation. You hope it's a slump but fear that this is the talent level now.

Wilder getting lots of stick for the set up but (i) when McCallum played on the left v Plymouth in front of Burrows it did not go very well (ii) he changed it up when he needed to and (iii) nobody could realistically have expected RND to be that bad.

I have no sympathy for Darling. A high dangerous challenge. I'm sure he didn't mean it but it was very reckless.

Classic Brewster goal: hit hard straight down the middle of the goal. Kudos to raul for calling it in Shoutbox before the game. One of Brewster's better games and he's adding value.

Finally, congrats to Swansea for having shots on target against us and actually trying to attack. It's been a long time since we saw that from them.

Got to feel for RND. He'll know he had a shocker and will be unlikely to start again anytime soon. But the lad's only 25 and can potentially come good again. Players can lose form and regain it. Agree that a loan may be the best option now. 1/10 seems a tad harsh though.

In hindsight it seems daft to give RND a 3 year contract and release the versitile Osborn who has done well at Derby (especially given our injury crisis). I suppose the players' respective ages may have had a bearing on the decision, though Osborn is only 30.

I thought Peck was superb. Surprised he got a 5 out of 10. 8 out of 10 for me. He gets better every game and it's unbelievable he's only 20 and was on the periphery at the start of the season and possibly going out on loan

Wilder 8 out of 10 - 3 games in 6 days, he HAS to use his small squad to the fullest, particularly with all the injuries. That includes picking RND who a couple of years ago was very good for us. Under most managers, going in at half time, we'd lose that game, heads would be down and they wouldn't have made 3 attacking subs. There's other factors too, the obvious development and coaching of Seriki into a game changer by Wilder and Knill, and the fact the team has the character to keep grinding out wins against the odds which is very much down to him. Folk should give praise here.

I thought Peck was superb. 8 out of 10 for me hard to believe he's only 20 and may have been going out on loan at the start of the season. He gets better and better

8 out of 10 to Wilder. With 3 games in 6 days ha HAS to use his small squad to the fullest, that includes RND who was very good for us a few years ago. So it didn't work, he put it right at half time. We wouldn't have won that game under most managers I've seen at Bramall Lane. But we saw the full spectrum of why Wilder is so good, not just the subs and the tactical changes, but also the clear coaching and development of the likes of Peck and Seriki (who thought he'd become a game changer). Also, this team again had the character to dig out a result against the odds, that is very much down to him. So folk should give praise where praise is due here

Cheers Deadbat, I really struggle to watch United live on tv, I’m a nervous wreck, ridiculous really. Sounds like the first half was truly dreadful. Has Brewster rediscovered his touch, sincerely hope so. I’ve since watched the recording, TC and Seriki were immense.
Might have to be patient with BBD.

I’m sensing a Plymouth type match on Friday given a long away journey yesterday while Hull were at home and have a hop skip and a jump on Friday

Not really hindsight, to play Hamer in midfield, McCallum left and Burrows LB was obvious.
RND should be nowhere near the team and Burrows is not a midfield player, Cardiff Cup game was a big clue to this.
The team will have travelled down to Swansea Monday afternoon, staying over and rested all day Tuesday so fatigue should not have been a problem

3 games in 6 days, he HAS to use his small squad to the fullest, particularly with all the injuries.
I'm very much in this camp - sure the first half team was not what we probably all wanted it to be - and the performance certainly wasn`t.

But I absolutely understand the reason for rotating through the (currently small) squad we have - especially with people coming back from injury. Getting 45 mins in Campbell & Seriki will help massively.

I'd probably feel very differently if we hadn`t turned it around.

Honestly it felt very like games in the PL where Liverpool/Man C/Arsenal rest a few players, the other team take the lead - and then they realise they actually need to bring on the rested players - and inevitably turn it around.

In some ways its nice being the big fish for once...

Another really good report. I always enjoy the read. My only criticism would be your mark for Cooper. Last night I would have given him at least a 6.5.
He is our best player and deserves better marks than you usually give him.
It is all subjective though and I thank you for your excellent reports.

I think it's unfair by Wilder to play Brooks on RW - he simply can't operate there - he'd be fine on LW - if Wilder is sticking with inverted wingers he needs to forget Brooks and get players like BBD who are suited to it.
Personally I like conventional wingers like Seriki who produced our equaliser last night and an open goal for Brewster or McCallum if they could have taken it.

Brooks is a bit of an enigma. At the start of the season he looked great on the RW before dropping out of favour, and then he goes and tears Watford a new one in that role too. He has looked pissed up ever since.

Agree on Seriki.

I disagree there, RND was good for us a few years ago, in fact we were all hopeful he'd return to fitness last season as he was seen as better than all other options we had in the Prem at left back, sadly it wasn't to be.

McCallum got a knock against Hull and isn't great defensively anyway (remember Boro away)!

He probably played Burrows centre mid because he's played there before and if Hamer gets booked (which he did), then Burrows centre midfield could well be the only option we have for a few games.

Like it or not, he's got to use his squad and I don't know how you make the assertion that they shouldn't be fatgued

Anyway, we won. So who cares

He is young and inexperienced - wild variability on performance level is to be expected.

They key is to ensure that he understands that - and therefore understands there may be times he is hauled off at HT.

Easy to expect RND to be that bad.

In the limited minutes hes had this season, he's been a disaster every time.

Think he's had 1 game for the unders this season and was sent off in exactly the same fashion he should have been sent off yesterday, and could have been vs Cardiff in the cup.

Came on as sub v Sunderland and almost put them through twice in the space of 20 seconds.

The kid unfortunately is done at this level, it's a shame.

RND was the lowest earner in the entire PL last season, so I'm sure that had an impact.

When he limped off against Cardiff, I thought he would be out for a while. I think he isn't fully fit, so maybe a loan will help with this.
