Honest discussion about the atmosphere

Safe standing doesn't fix it because you are still allocated a place to stand.

I did go in the away end when St Pauli played Nuremberg. Although standing spots were allocated, they were ignored. Fans organized themselves to be where they were most comfortable and as a result, those who wanted to sing grouped together.
But the fans who want to sing and create an atmosphere will all go into the standing section - that's the point. Where they stand after that shouldn't matter.

As someone that prefers attending live football (rather than watching on tv) because of the atmosphere.. its harder to justify forking out when there isn't much atmosphere.

Now if I'm thinking like that, then others must be too?

Could failure to improve the atmosphere lead to a reduction in ticket sales in the long term?

yep the atmosphere is definitely why I still make the effort to attend live games and that seems to get flatter every season for most games. Until we get an ‘unreserved’ section where like minded people can sit/stand together it will continue to decline. I know Ricky tried unsuccessfully to set something up in the BLUT, no idea why that failed, was it him or the idea? Maybe it needs to be a club initiative rather than an individual. And maybe it’s got to be the kop which would involve making some people ‘give up’ their seats.

I dont think fans are looking to change which stand they're in. I think Ricky's idea presumed fans didn't care which stand they were in, but most do.

Also being in upper tier makes it really hard to have a back n forth with the away fans which is vital for atmosphere really.

Its been 20+ years since back & forth days. Hasn't existed since H block was sanitised.

I love that aspect of our culture; we don't like being told what to do and resist authority.

I hate it when it works to stop us doing things which are mutually beneficial, just for the sake of it.
Unless it's an orchestrated virus perhaps🤔
That particular project fear steered many if not most of us into a heightened apathy. A withdrawal from life's pleasures, not just footy.
Almost like our souls have been ripped out.The very essence of us that normally embraces joy and excitement has been replaced by hollow meaning,no matter what the topic it could be argued.

As for social fuckin media 🙄More shite than good in my eyes given the daily evidence of it's addicts.

I feel like asking folk what the fuck they're doing at a game, glued to their phone. But I don't.

I guess it's down to those of us who can go a whole day without a phone to create something meaningful.Ya can't beat a good matchday singalong.

We used to be such a gobby lot.
A Sheffield trait I thought🤔

I think the yo yo effect from going up and then really struggling in the top flight has lessened the atmosphere this season and the last promotion one because getting promoted to the PL has resulted in dismal seasons up there. Also its not like in 1990, 2006 and 2019 where we'd not been in the top flight for 13/14 years which then made promotion a much bigger deal, especially when we'd recently been in league One in two out of the three promotions attempts.

The all seating stadium effect has an effect I think because when you're standing I think you're more inclined to sing, i.e you can project your voice more stood up than sat down.

But it's not just us at all. On the tele Sunderland sounded very quiet other then just after they scored.

We need a safe standing section, affordable tickets and most importantly a PL that is something to look forward to, aspire to, rather than just get there to remain a strong Championship club on our inevitable return.

If the new owners are able to afford decent funding of the team if we get promoted fans will see a more competitive team.

Personally though I love getting promoted because even with the long odds it's still great to get to the PL and I think if we go up well at least compete like Ipswich are doing.

There has been a general worsening of the atmosphere for some time now. Even when there is anticipation because of a full house or near full house ‘under the lights’ these recent sort of games have been muted. Maybe it’s because a whole generation of fans have seen the Prem for 3 seasons, 4 or so seasons in Champ and 6 in League 1, we’ve sort of covered a lot and so can say ‘been there, got the t-shirt’. My own enthusiasm is on the wane seemingly irrespective of results. I do think a PO final win under Wilder would sort of rekindle it wildly for me before going back to ‘Normal’.

People's generally widespread addictions to social media/phones/gambling/drugs etc etc probably have impacted many people's enjoyment and therefore the atmosphere.

Specifically, maybe the football match doesn't create enough dopamine hits for modern attendees. Just a theory.

"Ironically" I'd have thought the buzz of the crowd being loud, would give dopamine hits.

But what the hell do I know. Nothing really.

The amount of young(ish) lads I see at the back of the Kop scrolling through betting apps and social media during matches is quite depressing.

There's a big thing in the nightclub industry going on with more and more of the high profile nightclubs covering camera lenses as the dancefloors have become zombiefied with people just filming the dj/visuals.

An issue has been noted and action is being taken. No ones is really complaining about the action taken either as its clearly for the greater good.

It's a shame that there's no equivalent we could realistically introduce to prevent doomscrollers at the footy.

Possibly. Not guaranteed, but possible.

I got to the Coventry away game which is allocated standing. Didn't really work as you're not making a decision on who you're surrounded by and as others have mentioned, not everyone is willing to stand out by singing when those around them aren't.

Except some will say "you're in my seat"

If safe standing ever does arrive , I doubt it will be a general area allowed to be filled-up randomly.

In the days of the old kop , you & your mates just shuffled and squeezed your way into your favourite place.

In two decades standing on the kop , whether there was 20k on there or just 7k , we never failed to get right behind the goal just above the horizontal walkway halfway up.

But safe standing contraptions will physically prevent such movements.

Will need to be allocated slots , otherwise gaps will get left all over.

The only way it will improve the atmosphere is if ALL the occupants are singers.

Auditions are next Tuesday. TC and Simon Cowell on the panel.

The vast majority of chants on the Kop are completely independent of any away fans factor. Point taken about merely seeing them making some difference, but up there so far from the pitch, you can't hear most of the away chanting

Similar applies to away fans often not hearing us. The distance is too vast and the acoustics on the Kop are too poor. Every other stand is better for it and if there was ever a vocal away (or home) following on the upper tier it would be extremely loud

I haven't attended loads of matches in person at any ground, but my limited experience is that BDTBL isn't better or worse than any other ground I have attended.

Could it in part be a combo of:

1) young(er) fans having not experienced a "good atmosphere", they don't know there is more?
2) rose tinted glasses? with the capacity halved with seating introduced, it wouldn't take a huge amount for the volume and atmosphere to be less?

I probably shouldn't comment as I don't get to the ground much and maybe I am just happy to be there when I am!

i still think we only see the highlights of previous decades of football & we only remember the good games so there is abit of rose tinted glasses. we cant remember every game for previous 30 years. & its not as bad as we think but i think there is a still a drop off

could it be as much, football fans are too "intelligent" & the likes of Monday night football have had a adverse effect. because we are too busy watching & analysing to sing. as we cant multitask. whereas back in 70s or overseas they weren't. i remember the women's euros the swedish woman orchestrated the Swedish fans. great atmosphere but i dont think she saw any of the 1st half

There's less pissed up lads and more families. In the old days you had the match to watch with only a scoreboard for the other scores. Now people are on their phones half the time.

were not on our own on this topic locally porktalk got similar thread about how bad the atmosphere at the sty is

It was good to hear a bit of noise from G&H block today - I was on the BLUT and they were more audible than the Kop (recognise they’re closer, but still). Overall the atmosphere was still poor for a team top of the league, but it wasn’t the worst of the season by any means.

Norwich fans took the piss of course, but I was at Carrow Rd earlier in the season and it wasn’t exactly a cauldron of noise (albeit it was louder than today). They have the benefit of having a good sized standing section, which would really benefit BDTBL.
