I thought our much maligned midfield was outstanding today, and not just Flynn (who Talksport are calling the best player on the pitch). Villa were reduced to knocking it sideways across the halfway line for long spells, particularly in the second half, because our midfield 5 (if you include Baxter) simply shut down all the outballs, time after time. I thought it was the most organised, and disciplined, and sheer hard-working display I've seen from a Blades midfield for a very long time.

Big congrats to the players and the gaffer. Would be great to prove the Cup haters wrong by carrying this form into the league.

I know he gets a lot of stick but Doyle's contribution cannot be understated today. I thought he was excellent. Best I've seen him play.

He did indeed have a very good match.

He did indeed have a very good match.

Was first to his 50/50's, used the ball well when he got it and generally led by example in the middle. They all played well but given the shit he gets he deserves a mention or two today.

The only criticism to temper my praise for the midfield today was the casual/lazy balls from Baxter which invited pressure on to us when we were in control and looking to go forward. Other than that slight negative, I can't fault any of the men across the middle of the park.

I've not been a great fan of Doyle as club captain but that was a captain's performance today and he won challenges and got to balls he had no right to. Excellent effort.

What pleased me most was that we didn't panic when we lost the ball. We just regrouped immediately, formed up and stuck to the task collectively.

We were also very positive when we got into good areas. Murphy, Flynn et al consistently lifted their heads up and drove at Villa. Something I never saw from them before Clough arrived.
