The Wider approach to Cardiff FA Cup game.

You say Wilder always wants to win, but have we had any sort of cup run in either competition while he’s been in charge? Apart from getting to the quarter final in the Covid season, I can’t remember any others, which maybe suggests he doesn’t take the cups seriously.
He actually said ‘Wider’ always wants to win but that’s just me being pedantic!

I initially thought this thread was about playing with proper wingers in the FA cup.

Completely changed side.

Sadly this season the cup is a write off. Squad size made sure of that.

Davies
Baptiste
Shackleton
RND
McCullum

Academy

Brewster
Marsh
Brooks

One

Faxon and rest from the academy.

Only thing I’d maybe change is popping any new signings on the bench for a little cameo. Get the debut pressure bit done and out the way.

If we play with the same level of commitment as we did against Watford, our second XI team will breeze past Cardiff into round 4.

Faxon

Colechin
Baptiste
JLT
RND

Easton
Shackleton (if fit) / McCallum

Christie-Cranie
Hampson
Marsh

Brewster

Might consider Onay instead of Brewster, but apart from that, good picks. 😊

Why would Brooks need a break? He has hardly played this season, there are 5 days until the game and then 9 to the next. The only ones that need a rest are, Davies, (mostly because of his previous injury record, Peck, Hamer, O’Hare and Burrows. I see no reason for the centre halves to require one, or Gilchrist.

JLT has played every game recently and we have a senior player in RND to cover his position.

Anel has been out suspended then injured and shouldn’t really need a “rest” as such. It depends if he’s playing with an injury or not. Baptiste can come in if necessary.

Just don’t think that centre halves should need a break, though I can see the argument for giving RND and Baptiste game time. Since we stopped playing with overlapping backs, they don’t really make many high intensity runs, so aren’t wearing their body down.

Just looking at the Cardiff forum, some urging the club to play no 1st team players on Thursday . Looking more like a reserve fixture .

Moore didn't play because of a high temperature and feeling unwell so hopefully he'll be over it and will play

Isn’t that the EFL Trophy?
Yep. Other competitions just have the standard rules around playing the "strongest available side".

I forget the exact requirements, with us not having played in the thing for so long, but it's something like 5 players in a starting XI for the EFL trophy, have to either have played in the previous league match, or will play in the following league match.

Academy players + fringe players regaining match fitness and sharpness.

If Souza, Seriki, Rak-Sakyi and Campbell are ready, get them on for last 20mins

No Curtis or Freckleton (cup tied).

Hampson

Blacker
Marsh
McCallum

Brewster

Subs: Davies, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Tinsdale, Waldron, Cummings, Oné, Brereton, Moore

Think we need to wrap first teamers in bubble wrap ,can not afford any more wounded . Fringe players and some lads ,you never know we might unearth a gem . O r maybe some coming back from injuries who need a run out (if there is any).

O'Hare, Hamer, Anel, Cooper & Gilchrist should be watching in the stands, Brewster up front hoping to get a goal for the reserve team. Probably play 10 behind the ball and hope for a breakaway

I obviously knew that 🙄

RND to Centre Back. McCallum or Boyes at Left Back. Or just let Robinson keep his place.

God knows what to do at Right Back.

Wilder is putting in the miles on the treadmill as we speak. He can still do a job.

Colechin has been on the bench, Waldron is also highly regarded (might be injured?).

Waldron is on loan at Scarborough FWIW, although it was only an initial month's loan and so will expire today/tomorrow. Not impossible he come back for a few days, plays against Cardiff and then goes back to Scarborough / elsewhere!

Raises a question I don't know the answer to...if he plays for us in the FA Cup, does that mean he has played for two teams this season and can therefore only play for us or Scarborough for the rest of the league season, or do cups not count in that 2-teams-only rule?

Edit: get a pod done ya lazy get

Don't you have to play so many 1st team players or players that played in the last 1st team game, or is that rule for a different cup ?
it is not a fixed percentage or anything. This is what the rules say: NB "available" ... that's the weasel word in there.

15. PROVISIONS CONCERNING PLAYERS

(a) Each team participating in a match shall represent the full available strength of each competing Club.

What new players?
Not ITK to name them, but CW seems pretty confident that he will have 8 players to add to the Norwich squad. If we at present have 6 injured then there will be at least 2 new ones.

Cup games count AFAIK, it's "official matches" in the FIFA wording:

Not sure if there's some loophole with being registered for non-league teams.

PS: I'm actually watching the Watford game right now in preparation! Hopefully recording tomorrow.

So I guess we won't play him unless a Scarborough deal is in-place. That's a shame.

Good news re pod. HNY by the way. UTB

Hope you're right mate ... we need em!

Pretty sure Scarborough play low enough down the pyramid that it’s not considered an appearance by FIFA’s standards. An FA Cup game definitely would.
