Wider always wants to win, but will he approach this game differently, given the injuries and threadbare squad?

He will still want to win, but he could be excused for playing the academy lads who have been keeping the bench warm and not playing games.
Marsh must be bursting for a chance to show what he can do? A few might need a rotation rest, to make sure they are not too knackered for the more important Norwich game. Peck and Brooks might benefit from a rest if Wilder has plans to play them against Norwich
Is this why he brought Curtis back from loan duty?

Who would you play v Cardiff?

The incoming new players plus those who didn’t start the last match ?

Sam McCallum, RND and Ryan One would be the only players who played some part yesterday that I would want to see playing I am not sure I would want to risk any of those who have been out injured play. Cardiff will not put a full strength team out anyway as they must see avoiding relegation a priority. I think Wilder needs a rest as well.

Very good point regarding Wilder. I never even considered that. Knowing him, he would probably kick up a srink and feel left out. 😉
Sounds like RND needs the game time anyway?

Don't you have to play so many 1st team players or players that played in the last 1st team game, or is that rule for a different cup ?

You say Wilder always wants to win, but have we had any sort of cup run in either competition while he’s been in charge? Apart from getting to the quarter final in the Covid season, I can’t remember any others, which maybe suggests he doesn’t take the cups seriously.

Wilder has made little effort to win some of the other cup games we have played in his two spells, most notably Barnet in 2019. He will happily play a weakened team.

Expect a team similar to the one we used v Wrexham, only a bit weaker.

Why would Brooks need a break? He has hardly played this season, there are 5 days until the game and then 9 to the next. The only ones that need a rest are, Davies, (mostly because of his previous injury record, Peck, Hamer, O’Hare and Burrows. I see no reason for the centre halves to require one, or Gilchrist.

JLT said he and others definitely needed a rest in the post-match

I think Curtis is cup tied

I'd play all of those who were on the bench yesterday (only one keeper though!) plus any returning from injury, if they are fit enough, maybe for 50, 60 mins. Load the bench with first teamers who are fit. Simples.

No point in playing Curtis unless he is staying to play for the 23s.Anothr loan is more likely which means he can't play Thurs.

We can probably cobble a defence together around RND, Baptise, McCallum and a couple more from the U21's. And the forward line could be a combination of Brewster, One and Marsh.

But how on earth do we put out a competitive midfield without using at least one of the midfielders who started yesterday? And they are the players who need resting the most. This is assuming none of the injured players will be ready to chuck straight back in, as I imagine they are being held back for Norwich.

I’d pay for them all to go on a beano to Camber Sands if I were chairman. Play the kids, let em have some fun.

CW said after the game yesterday Ohare, Hamer and Tom Davies shouldn't have started and there were concerns about 3 or 4 others. He'd had to over rule the medical staff. That tells you were are at risk of further injuries so the FA Cup game has to be a scratch team.

Selection is compounded further by the ridiculous timing for television on Thursday, BBC Wales are showing, when the majority of other teams are not due to play until Saturday meaning a shorter rest period of 5 days compared to 7. Add in the U21's are playing their first PDL game in a month on Tuesday away to Burnley and the selection headache is amplified.

In an ideal scenario we sign two players before Thursday and give them a run out for 45 mins and Moore has recovered from his illness. Assuming none of this happens the club should play the u18 team on Tuesday and use the bulk of the U21 squad for the game against Cardiff.

My suggested line up as follows assuming Dovy and Waldron are not recalled from their loans. Frecklington and Curtis are cup tied;

A Davies
Baptiste Gilchrist JLT, RND
Blacker McCallum
Brewster Marsh Brooks
One

Subs;

Faxon
Easton
Tahir
Boyes
Hampson
Aston
Tinsdale
Atherton
Beattie

Whilst the FA rule states that, “Each team participating in a match shall represent the full available strength of each competing Club", there are many precedents for fielding non-regulars, without punishment.

Given we have had so many academy players on the bench, I think we will be fine to field an 11 of players we have hardly ever seen. I'd ideally like lads who have been used to training and playing together though, as that gives them the best chance.

When a 1st team player is coming back from injury and plays in the U21s, you can see it's disruptive to that group, and they don't usually play as well. Lincoln City in the Carabao cup last season was another example of watching players who clearly don't train together and it being a bit of a shambles.

I'd like us to rest everyone who needs it and then field a team who are used to each other, even if that meant literally fielding the U21 team.

Change the team as much as possible with a well deserved rest for the regulars. I know very little about our academy players so please feel free to adjust...

About as close to starting 11 as we could/ should hopefully for. The other blanks could be new signings if any get through door before this game.

On the bench we should have players that could do with 20/30 min run out (coming back from injury) to grt up to speed for Norwich.

We also have Freckleton and Curtis back (if we are not planning on loaning them back out).

That's about as strong as I'd go. Give Davies and Peck 45 each

Nobody should expect a strong line up or decent performance. It's rarely even satisfying from individual point of views. Wilder will be pleased to get knocked out based on his cup approach and record with us, and on this occasion I have no problem with that

I've done 5 mins Googling and I'm still unsure what the rules and regs are on team selection currently.

Can't remember if it was the League or FA Cup that said you had to include a certain number of players from recent league games.

I love the FA Cup and usually hate getting knocked out but would completely understand us fielding a very weakened team on Thursday.

I think it’s the league where you’ve got to field a certain number of players from your previous match, following incidents such as Liverpool changing their whole team and helping to relegate us. I’m not aware there is such a rule for the cups as it’s doesn’t affect the integrity of the competition in the same way it does in the league.

There's nine sleeps between the Cardiff game and the Norwich game, plenty of recovery time for everyone.

The only question should be "who's fit enough to pay against Cardiff without taking undue risks"

I'm 70 this year and ever since I was a lad the F.A Cup final has been my dream destination but in reality I guess that Chris will be as negative as he always is in cup ties, claiming "the team I put out should have been good enough to win", as he always does.
