We desperately need a right back. I would love this as a signing. Thought he was very good for Luton a few years back too.

Interesting if true.

Per other posts recently, I haven't been overly impressed by Gilchrist.
I've been waiting on the improvement but he actually seems to be getting worse.

Gilchrist is a player that looks better on TV than in the Stadium. On TV you see him making these last ditch sliding tackles or blocking a cross... in the Stadium you realise it's his poor positioning that puts him in those vulnerable positions.

Further to this, more and more wingers are realising that if you simply take him on down the outside his one-on-one defending & recovery pace isn't strong enough and he's getting beat fairly often.

In an attacking sense, he really offers little-to-nothing. He'll pass the ball forward then conservatively jog back to position.

At least with Seriki you know you're getting an attacking threat, which in itself negates the opposition winger's ability to attack.
And he's out player.

Neither Seriki or Gilchrist are what I'd want to have to rely on over 25 games, so a signing like Bree would be great to get us over the line.
Also, sending Gilchrist back would free up another loan slot...

It's an unpopular opinion and I hate to criticise a youngster.
He has potential and seems to have fitted in really well with the lads, but we're getting towards business end and maybe a big decision needs to be made.

think your being a bit unfair in your criticism of gilchrist hes been a very good loan signing imo and your forgetting one important thing hes a centre back not a right back i think hes done well for us filling in for that position personally i would give seriki a continued run in the team when fit i like him and gives us more of an attacking threat down the right

Seriki dosent look convincing defensively though, which is a concern if you are a right back.
Seriki is best at the moment coming on as sub after about 70min not starting.
Agree about Gilchrist though, he can't be doing that bad playing in a side that's only conceded 11 goals in 21 games and like you said playing out of position.
I do think our fans sometimes expect too much from players especially when they come from the top six sides.

Can't say I'd be that impressed with Bree either, dosent seem to be getting a lookin at Southampton who are going all out trying their best not beat our points total from last season.

Hard to accept that though ancientblade . He's been brought here to play RB, not CB.
He isn't "filling in" for us there, his whole purpose is to be our RB.

He has done OK, but I don't fully trust him and I don't see why we should continue trying to develop Chelsea's player when we have our own player in Seriki and the difference is negligible (I actually prefer what Seriki brings).

As I say, we're approaching business end. We can't have a lad learning on the job in such a key area. I'd be really happy to bring in someone with more experience for the second half.

The arguments against will be "we're top, we're doing fine, look at the defensive record, why change it..."
Alex Ferguson won so many titles with Manchester Utd by never resting on his laurels and evolving when others stood still.

We're not the finished article and if we have resources in January we should use them to improve.

see your point but seriki will only get better by being given more playing time add to that the fact that the final 3rd is our weakest area not our defence and seriki adds to that with his forward runs hes been caught out of position on a couple of occasions but needs cover when hes marauding forward with gilchrist seriki and shackleton able to play rb dont see why that position should be important for us to cover in january striker winger and midfielder are more important areas we should be looking at imo

yes hes been brought in to play rb but hes not a right back so think he needs to be given a little slack having said that my opinion is that seriki should be playing home games and gilchrist away games

Don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest Right Back is an area we can improve on. I like Gilchrist but he’s come through as a Center back and it shows. Might not all be his fault but he’s not been able to build a partnership w JRS. If you compare that to burrows on the other side, no question which is our stronger side and teams are starting to target us there.

Wilder is no mug and knows a good fullback when he sees one. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he wants to bring another one in and then use both seriki and gilchrist as back up, each with a different skillset.

Not a massive criticism of gilchrist, he’s being asked to play a new position for a top of the league champ side. It’s a big step up for him and I’m happy to have him in the squad. He hasn’t let anyone down and If we’re under the cosh late in games he brings good height and aggression from RB. But for the next 25 games we need to maximize every position we can and I think right back is one where we can do better.

Right back is an area we can improve and we do not have our own first choice option on the books. If we had cash, I would say it is the next priority in terms of permanent signings and squad building. Yet, Gilchrist has still been part of an exceptional defensive lineup, despite some struggles in recent games ( I do agree opponents seem to be deliberating targeting his lack of pace in recent weeks), so given I assume we have 2 loan spots to use, I am not sure it is as critical as other areas.. At present with an automatic promotion on the cards, I think a striker and a central midfielder would have more an impact and where we also carry more of risk in terms of options and fitness.

Controversial opinion.

What I have seen of Gilchrist-

Positives- Strong in the tackle, fearless and aggressive. Vocal.
Negatives- pace, positioning out of possession. Attacking options lacking crossing, shooting and carrying the ball.

Right back?- no, not at this or the next level as he’s just not quick enough.
Cb?- not premier league level, too short and doesn’t have the pace to make up for that. May end up at this level or below is my assessment.

So while he’s done some good things and been part of some success so far we could improve that area greatly.

Genuine questions coz I can't remember.
Did CW ever say whether Alfie was coming in to play CB or RB ?
Also , was Shackleton coming in as a RB or that dreaded 'utility player' ?

Started for Southampton today - subbed at half time (at which point they were only 0-1 down)

Shackleton was backfill for Osborn - to play any of about 6 positions (poorly!)
