Seriki or Gilchrist

You start gilchrist against these and bring seriki on…
I agree it is a problem. Gilchrist is good and solid at the back but Seriki gives you more going forward .Very little between them with both having different skills and they are good at what they bring to the team .Depends how the match is going i think on who starts and who is held back to bring on later .It is a nice problem to have and no doubt Wilder will get flack which ever way he goes . Being at home i would go for Seriki to start getting the team on the front foot and hopefully bring on Gilchrist to defend a lead .

I think a significant factor regards the decision is that we always start with Rak Sakyi down the right hand side.
JRS is great going forward but a novice/ liability regards defensive duties.

I suppose Wilder is thinking having JRS and Sereki down the right flank is really exciting with excessive attacking strength but there's hardly any defensive insurance and that flank would then become our weakness ready to exploit by any decent attacking team (like Sunderland).

At least with Gilchrist staying back and being a natural defender/ tackler it gives JRS much more freedom to concentrate on his attack play.

As you mention, Sereki is a fantastic option to hold back and bring off the bench to terrorise a tired Sunderland defence.

Sunderland will be playing Watson with Mundle out. Don't know much about him, but he's fast and tricky. Seems like a better fit for Seriki, but it's a nice headache to have.

The 2 are each very good in different ways. Which were perfectly demonstrated in the derby. Gilchrist is a solid defensive full back, while Seriki is more of a marauding, attacking wing back, who relies on his pace to handle defensive situations rather than innate technical ability like Gilchrist does.

In a match like Tuesday, you can play Seriki with very little concern of the decision backfiring. Our team was competent enough to retain possession for longer periods, preventing Oxford from building forwards slowly, and perhaps forcing a mistake out of Seriki as a result. We can cope with any counter attacking threat with the other defenders, along with Vini, to sniff out any major threats, and force them, as we did a few times in the first half especially, into shots from range.

Tonight is not likely to be one of those games. Sunderland are a much stronger side than Oxford, even while missing a few players (e.g. their left winger whose name currently escapes me). They will almost certainly have more of the ball, and put a greater amount of pressure on our defence than Oxford did. As such, you play Gilchrist. He can sit behind the wide player, and hold a strong defensive line with Souttar and JLT in the middle. He is excellent at one-on-one defending, so should do fine going up against a winger as Sunderland will have. Then there is less reliance on the winger in front of him to come back and defend, meaning you can leave him further forward and force Sunderland into a decision on whether to leave a defender back to watch our wide player (probably JRS), or push forward, and gamble that you won't be caught out on the break.

Are those really the only terms you’re using to pose this question? Any other factors you think might be significant?

🙄

When I say bottle it I mean there will likely be pressure from Chelsea to play him and we will likely have paid nearly a million for him

If we drop Gilchrist for the next 10 games until the end of the JTW I can see Chelsea wanting to find him a new club for the second half of the season

Seriki for me has been the surprise of the season. From very early on we knew we had Blaster, Peck and Brooks through from the Academy who could all play at this level and then Seriki burst onto the scene. Looked good against Wrexham in Cup but got injured early on and was injured for a few games but since hes come back looks a real player at this level. Certainly on a level with Peck and Brooks. What a production line. One' not at level of others yet but clearly looks like he will have what it takes to play at this level.

Which ever way Wilder goes both players have skills to be in the team

I am not having a go mate but can you see what you typed here? I mean you have to choose one of them to start way before you see how the match is going no?

Gilchrist to start tonight for me, Seriki to come on if needed, other wise same as Tuesday, Roberts needs watching but lets take it to them from the start, attack!, UTB

Makes you wonder if getting injured in the Wrexham match stopped Seriki from potentially going out on loan again (where he might not have had the season like he's had so far) and gave him a route into the first team when he came back from injury, given that we signed Shackleton as RB cover.

You start Gilchrist and bring Seriki on. The joys of having a squad. Seriki was great against Oxford but it was Oxford and he'll probably benefit from a rest. He's also not as good a player as Gilchrist, week in, week out. But having his pace to bring on will be key.

Id start Seriki. More of a risk as we’d need to score asap in the first half. I imagine it will be a cagey first half, which I don’t want, probably suits Gilchrist if the case. Depends on how Wilder approaches it.

I assume that's not a serious suggestion
I wouldn`t play Gilchrist instead of JLT, but it is worth remembering that Gilchrist is a centre back at Chelsea so could be an option at right centre back should the need occur during the season.

Yes i admit i have not made it clear ,i was trying to make the point that who ever starts and who ever is on the bench is not really a problem ,both have qualities that complement the team . Qualities that can change the way the team operates . sorry about that

Striking looked good in the week and in his cameos, Gilchrist has looked solid all season. Tough choice, but a great problem to have

I’m generally still high on Seriki but I fear he reminds me a bit of Oli Burke at times.
