Having read most of the derby related posts on here the last week or so, I think the exact same could be said of most blades.

Hardly any confidence and excitement about the potential of beating the main rival. Just a “what if we lose, I’d take a draw” mentality.

Ah well
Because of how rarely we play each other there's only a handful or so of wins either way this century. They are rare things!

There is a lot of guesswork going on there. What would their gates be if they didn't have their successful spell ,whenever that was (before my time).

All we know is the reality, we are generally getting bigger gates, better results and watching better players.
Fair enough - I'd just like to see them obliterated and I guess that's not happening fast enough !

SUFC finished above SWFC 18

Apparently, according to their fans, some neutrals and some pundits, they are a huge club and we are a smaller club than them. Hilarious, it's not even close. We've finished above them in 75% of those seasons. It's not even close.

Facts. Don't let them get in the way.

Whats crazy is this is nearly 1/5th of the clubs history as well.

But for some reason the 'fifth' before that is significantly more important when an argument props up as to whos bigger.

The only thing I will add is the last 'fifth' both teams have underachieved aside from 3 or 4 seasons, with only 1 season from us making a mark near the top of the English football pyramid

Thr city is generally support wise 55% Midweek and 45% us. It moves around a little when one teams is doing better than the other. If we could sustain 3 or more years in the Prem the scales would slowly shift as youngsters want to support a Premier League team. Alas last time it was short and quite the opposite to sweet. Establish ourselves and we will see the swing. Till then?
Absolute bollox. Love it when people come out with random made up percentages with no evidence whatsoever to back it up.

I'm talking about the team/management rather than the players. They come into every derby now with the same loser, 10 men behind the ball mentality - a lot like us in the Prem, unfortunately.

The variability of their attendances show that they have an unusually high proportion of fair weather fans. They have always crawled out when things are going well.
WAWW
We are Woodwork Wednesdayites

They are in a hole right now. Crumbling stadium, poor facilities, an academy that seems to churn out one average squad player in a decade and the best player they have under contract is 34 years old!

Their chairman doesn't want to invest, they're losing money, seem to have minimal income generation outside of match day tickets and TV cash.

The only good thing they've got going is the manager.

But footballs a funny old game. They could bring in a couple of loanees, gamble on a lower league striker in January. They exceed expectations. Go on a run,.make the playoffs. Surprise everyone, get promoted and all of a sudden things change.

It's far fetched, I know. But we should never get too cocky. We've seen our selves, a couple of times, that a team can be in the abyss and then all of a sudden we're on a crazy ride up the leagues.

With the exception of their 'mega-support' and perhaps 'best stadium in the world' fallacies, their delusional focus in two lines...

So, far from a 0-0 being a win for them, or a 0-1 being a draw, it seems they won't actually lose a derby game until the score is 5-0 to us!
Boxing day 1979 was almost 46 years ago. Just 28 years before the Boxing day game, we'd beat them 7-3 (September 1951) Were we still banging on about it before we played them? No.
Only in S6 can the bragging rights not apply to a team who fails to beat you by more than 4 goals!
As for a top 6 finish this season, I'd do a 'Gary Lineker' through Sheffield if they did but without the covering of over-sized boxer shorts.
Thankfully, for the good people of our city, they won't be subject to the sight of my saggy scrotum any time soon, even with their '2 or 3 good additions'

I've seen a few pigs say that United "missed a chance" to get a big win. They're probably right.

That said, we played pretty poorly on Sunday (it was our third or fourth worst performance of the season) and, if anyone missed a chance to capitalise, it was Wednesday. That was a great chance for them to get an upset and they completely missed it.

Think 17/18 should be champ for us, not L1

Surely you are mistaken after watching this 10 minute clip, we only had the ball for four seconds (when we scored) otherwise they'd have edited that out as well

That is rediculous. Compare this with the Behind the Blades for the action and chances that we had. This shows none of that. The mind boggles!

You're right, my bad.

Interestingly we've only been in the same division as each other 10 times during that same period and we came out on top on 8 of those occassions.

It's crazy how they've sank that low that anything less than 4-0 defeat against a team you say you're miles bigger than is now success.

As for the 2 or 3 better players to get in the play offs, literally every club in the league could say that because it's always that tight below the top 4 or 5. They've got a run of easier games coming up now so let's see what they do.

More importantly, only one of those times were we in the same division. Out of the 10 seasons when we have been in direct competition this millennium, the record is 9-1 to us.

We beat them comfortably without a proper striker available. They need to get back in their box.

We've gone from 17k fans to 27k fans in 20 years.
This ^^^
Sheffield Uniteds fan base has grown substantial. Dispite what any one thinks about Warnock, during the seasons he managed us we attracted new fans, youngsters.
In terms of support, there is now next to nothing between the Sheffield clubs. We need more capacity.

We don't seem to have hoovered up many of the fans - they still get big gates and we fail to fill the Lane - can't understand it really
Do you think we'd get gates as high as theirs if we'd had their last two decades ?
I don't
United's ticketing policy is bonkers ! I live in Thailand and recently visited Sheffield and called United about buying a ticket to watch them play Stoke.
The woman in the ticket office said I need 500 points to buy a ticket, I don't have any as I live abroad.
There must be quite a few fans like myself you would like to go but cannot as they don't want to pay to become members for a one off game or their first game etc.

They spent more than enough time there on Sunday 😀

In all seriousness though I think the stats of wins v draws for both sides it's fairly even isn't it? We edge the wins by about 4 matches or something.

I don't think they have an inferiority complex, I think we have an inferiority complex. Alot of fans, myself included, seemingly go in to a lot of games with nerves, even nervy watching. It's only after you realise the team were often comfortable in the game. We're in such a weird position at the minute where we may be a shade too good for the championship but nowhere near Prem level. Difficult to make that leap and that I think gives us a complex.

Those on the other side have a superiority complex in collosal proportions. I mean I sometimes envy them, I walk away from a 2-0 win wishing we had been more dominant and scored more because I think we should be doing that to certain teams. They walked out of a 1-0 loss and spun it in to a victory.

Well the last time they were over confident we humiliated them.
I do find it hillarious though that a club that refer to themselves as the massive praise performances like today, celebrate draws like wins, and moan about how expensive some of our players are.

Are you massive? Or are you the arrogant little cousin that talks like they're Jay from inbetweeners, secretly knowing they're a joke.
Ah yes. La Liga was going to sort out the wheat from the chaff once we’d got promoted from League One, wasn’t it? 🤣

Hopefully new ownership will make the difference and see us actually attempt to build a Premiership squad over the next 3 or 4 windows. As it stands we already have a better side than we fielded in the top flight last time out.

You have some good points there but I still can't understand why we can't sell a couple of thousand more home seats when we are riding high at the top of the league.
If the pigs were in our position , I am confident they would be selling all their home seats.
Conversely , if we'd finished below them for 18 of the last 24 seasons and had a horrible team of cloggers like they currently have , in the bottom half , we'd not even be getting 20k , never mind their average of 25k , only 1k or 2k behind us , who are so much better ?
Why are so many of them so loyal to a pile of shit ? Is it bred into them ?
I hate them with a vengeance but I have to say the loyalty of so many is quite remarkable.
In that sense , they are undeservedly a "bigger" club.
I would have thought after 2 decades of pasting them , our tickets would be like gold dust and we'd have a waiting list for STs to justify ground expansion , but strangely it's not happening.
I would have expected a much greater shift in support from blue to red but perhaps there are not enough newcomers to Sheffield and loyalty just passes down family lines ?
Maybe this is why it's so difficult to attract a buyer for club , as they can't get a response to success which might be achievable in London or West Brom or a one club city like Derby whose gates are high despite going nowhere.
It's simple enough
LET PEOPLE IN THE FUCKING STADIUM

It's beyond a joke that a football club caters for it's usual 27,000 - 28,000 fans and does fuck all to allow new fans in without the most incredible hoop jumping known to man.

These people are NEW CUSTOMERS/NEW FANS and if the club won't allow them in and buy tickets with a mate/family they won't come. Why would they?

Why would anyone go somewhere they are not used to going and sit on their own all day?

And before all the loyalty points clapping brigade arrive, let's get to another FA Cup Semi Final and do it the old fashioned way.

Have a queue around the car park and all the way down Shoreham Street and be able to buy a ticket for yourself, your mate, your sister, brother, aunt, grandad and whoever else you want to buy one for, and I GUARANTEE THAT WE WILL SELL EVERY LAST FUCKING TICKET.

It won't affect anybody that is a season ticket holder or loyalty points holder because there's only 28,000 of them anyway, and they'll still get first dibs.

Maybe then someone might understand that the system is flawed.

you should be allowed to buy a +1 on home or away tickets

You are bang on the money, we have so many floating fans out there without any new ones wanting to come on board. I know of loads of Blades that didn’t go on Sunday for instance, missed out due to how quick we sold out in the morning of general sale whilst at the same time not even realising they were on sale, their own faults entirely but we must make it easier for new fans especially to be able to watch the Blades at some point.

We need a bigger stadium at some point but I’m not sure how this will all happen, will be a tough transition to make for all involved because it will mean a lot of people will probably miss out at some point for the extension to materialise.
