Every year, the same thing happens. The last post is immaculately observed, but after being told it will be followed by a minutes silence, people feel the urge to clap and roar.
The chanting beforehand from the KOP was poor too, after two ‘shushes’ from GS.

It’s not that difficult.

One annoyance from a fantastic afternoon.

Not sure if there is an etiquette to this but could the minute’s silence come first followed by the Last Post? That way, there’s no chance for applause as happened today.

Exactly what I said today, we’ve tried multiple times and people are incapable of listening, so we need to make it as simple as possible.

Yep, annoyed me too.
I do think the applause at the end of the last post confused things though.
Technically people are silent through that, I don't know, I'm making excuses for people even though it pissed me off at the time as well.

People assume that the last post is part of the silence

It’s not a big deal, and it’s always respectfully observed

From what I saw after the last post the crowd thought it was over and the players just then went off presumably after the ref went "OK f*ck it it's not happening"?

I think if Sinclair says TWO MiNUTES silence inclusive of The Last Post and puts 2 mins countdown on the screen it might work better.

I think Sinclair is very good at his job btw, we're very lucky to have had him all these years. Other clubs have some total dross MCs in comparison.

Said the same. GS made it clear what was going to happen but thousands clearly can't follow simple instructions.

The Royal British Legion recommends this order of observance:
  1. At 11:00 am, the Last Post is played.
  2. The exhortation is then read.
  3. The Two Minute Silence then begins.
  4. The end of the silence is signalled by playing The Rouse.
In the fanzone yesterday, they said something (couldn’t hear what as it was too noisy) then had the 2 minute silence (after a bit of shushing) which was ended by the Last Post followed by applause.
Seemed to work well & think it would have been a better order for the match.

I guess that as there was a 'huge roar' it's more to do with how it's communicated rather than a defiance of it.
Sort the comms, sort the issue.

The clapping epidemic is a covid hangover from when we did the clap for carers thing. People clapping hearses as they go by instead of standing in solemn silence now. It’s well intentioned but it looks utterly ridiculous. It’s like people have simply forgotten why silence is appropriate for such things.

Or maybe... just leave the min silence for each individual to do at 11AM (if they choose to do so) rather than try and make a huge crowd compliant like school kids... just saying. Or do it before the post is a good idea too.
It’s the club showing it’s respect and gratitude every club does it and so they should
I don’t mind a few minutes out of my life every
Year for people who gave theirs
It’s an important tradition and it’s always been done and always will be this way

I agree with the poster, wbhy people cant show respect is beyond belief, it was even said by announcer the last post followed by a brief silence to be ended by the referee.

Much ado about nothing. How many people complaining stopped quaffing their pints at 11am to respect the correct time to pay their respect? The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Not trying to be disrespectful but it's suddenly turned into remembrance week where football's concerned.

Said this for years. Just make it as simple as possible. A moment of silence/reflection followed by the last post being played which when finished signals the end.

Even though what we try to do is simple enough: people arriving late, people who are 8 pints in and people that lack the capacity to follow a few clear instructions (or a mixture of all 3) make it look like we are being disrespectufl when i sure 99.9% of the people who roar at the wrong time don't mean to be.

Yeh needs to change. I couldn’t believe everyone clapping and shouting after GS said a ‘moments silence until the refs whistle’.

The reason of the cheering after the Last Post finished was Billy Sharp was going up the stairs into the press box/tv studio between kop and South stand and was spotted and kop started singing his name

It really only became formalized in the 90's and early 2000's.

Doing the minute's silence before would be a better idea. Gary Sinclair may have said it clearly, but it's wrong to assume that 30,000 were listening to him.

I’d agree, I’d also say it’s easier to observe because some people have the attention span of a goldfish and can’t keep their fucking trap shut for two minutes

I do dislike when they say a moments silence. Call it a minute or don't do it.

It did seem like GS had to explain a lot before hand. hard enough to keep up with sat at home, let alone after a few pints and surrounded by other fans.

It all just felt confused for something that for most is second nature.

The silence on rememberance Sunday used to be a profound moment of reflection when the whole nation stopped . I think every organisation having their own weakens it. Every televised game for over a week has started with an act of remembrance. Yesterday we had the the silence in the fan zone followed by again pre match. A minuet (or two) has also been introduced on the 11th. I’ve just walked past greggs with a poster in the window asking me to “join them for two minutes silence at 11 o’clock today”
