Maguire - Is he all that ?

Not just a reaction to today's cock up but an observation over the last 3 years. He's a grafter but he's slow, clumsy and poor on the ball. I must say he reads the game well for a lad his age but I'm not sure that's enough in his case. I like the lad but he's overrated and I'd take it if we got a decent bid for him but the fact that teams have been watching him and we still haven't seen a bid come in, I think, says it all !
 



I imagine we are fighting off offers for all of our team, yet Maguire and Long the 2 youngest players in the team get the grief. Even for the Doyle I never thought he could get any worse than he was today, yet nothing. Lappin, White, Flynn. No? Let's just fuck on the young lads who at their age should be forgiven bad games.

Where was this post over the last few weeks?

He's our leading goal scorer and still a pup. He's not going to be a really top player, but we are bang average, at best, from front to Back. He's definitely above being singled out.

Flynn and bizarrely Hill got most of the stick where I was. Maguire though, not particularly good.

I'm not singling him out for stick but he is often spoke of as being one of our hot prospects, I merely believe he is not as good as some say. His goal tally, while impressive, is a bit irrelevant as you don't tend to rate your centre backs on the goals they score

It depends what you are expecting I suppose. If there's anyone left who thinks he's a really top center half in the making, then I'd agree with you. I don't hear those statements any more.

I agree that most if not all the team have been poor so far but only Harry and George are regarded as prospects so my post was just to question Harry's quality and whether he is, indeed, the player we thought he would be by now
 
No he is shit. Don't think I would give one of them over 5 though today

Not for me. A reasonable defender who is awful on the ball. We've got, and have had, a lot worse.

Fynn still being named in the first 11 is most bizzare for me. But it seems unfair picking anyone out of a shower of shite at the moment.

Yet most want to pick on Maguire and Long. I don't believe they are the reason we are bottom of the 3rd
 
Aye, there were several players just in the team today that are worse than Hill.

As I say, the people around me weren't picking on Maguire and Long other than some deserved criticism for the first goal.

Yeah, Flynn should have got on the back pass, useless bleeder.
 



Maguire at times reminds me of Brian Gayle - back to goal sometimes he's very good, has a good eye, and intercepts well. Passing out of defence can be erratic. Facing goal then it's a little "O Dear" and is prone to the short back pass, and losing sight of opposition players.
 
Agreed you can't single just Maguire out when all the team are shit. My opinion of Maguire is he's ok when he's got to head the ball or wrestle an opponent and that's it. I think it's time that people stopped making excuses for the players and woke up and realized we are just damn right shit.. Big big changes need making in January otherwise we be exiting the league through the trap door into league 2!!
 
Someone needs to tell Harry (and rest of the back four) that they need to get back to simple football.

If in doubt, clear your lines, don't piss about with it.
If there is a short pass to midfield or full backs on, don't launch a 40-60 yd speculative cross field ball like Beckham and Gerrard.
Sort out the marking!

My observation on Harry - slow on the turn, but strong and determined. Passes comfortably and confidently.

Our back four need to learn from the Gillingham no 26!
 
i reckon if harry and george weren't academy graduates they would be getting some serious stick by now
 
Very poor game from him yesterday, but no Maguire is still a great talent. He did win player of the season for us last two seasons and won a number of young player awards.
He lacks in certain areas but he is still young a hopefully Clough will iron out any problems he is having.
 
To be fair a lot of people on here don't rate him very highly and have said so many times in the past. He turns slower than the titanic. Someone said ages ago maybe he could play in the Doyle role in midfield. I laughed. But maybe it's not quite as daft after all. Certainly Doyle can't play in the Doyle role.
 
Some of the rose tinted glasses wearing -give weir more time brigade- will be saying-" he's AHEM,still learning his trade" bollox.
Not that he hasn't probably been kicking a ball from the age of 6 or 7 like the rest of us did.
 
The opposition do there homework on us and most of them now have worked us out.

You'll never see teams go long against us they know McGuire and Collins can match them,as markers they as good as anyone in the division but they also know if they can go pass them for fun on the deck as they are probably the slowest pair in league 1

No, he'd have probably got the same answer. I didn't rate him that highly when he was here (as high as he is performing now). I thought he was a good player, and one that one probably earn a good career at either high champ or low prem. His improvement and evolution as a player, and the speed thereof, has blindsided me.
