Has cloughy been on the Blades forums? Has he spoken to the fans? Either way he has publicly outed that 1 up front isn't going to happen during his time at the lane unless forced I guess. Heres the extract courtesy of SUFC.CO.UK

Nigel Clough intends to go into battle with two strikers, as much as possible.

Speaking to the media this week ahead of Saturday's visit to Shrewsbury Town, the new Blades chief also revealed that his favoured formation is an orthodox system.

"4-4-2 gives us a real solidity; we have two banks of four who contribute defensively and offensive.

"We will back ourselves playing 4-4-2, you have to. On the odd occasion we might have to add an extra man to the midfield but I certainly want two upfront whenever possible."

Looking ahead to Saturday's game, Clough added: "Everyone has trained well ahead of Shrewsbury, which means we have options and decisions to make ahead of the weekend. That said, we won't make wholesale changes unless results deteriorate.

"We have watched several DVDs of Shrewsbury and we are continuing to study every team in League One.

"We will pay the opposition the necessary respect but we have to concentrate on ourselves."

...and Pinchy:)

Actually I favour 4-4-2. There is no reason why good, creative football cannot be played within that formation. What I dislike, as you may have heard, are aimless long balls in the general area of 'their box' whether to one striker or two.

It's a myth that I avidly approved of the football under DW (apart from the Notts County game). You won't find much (any?) praise from me for performances after that one. The most I said in defence of DW was that his principles were right and that the welcome quest for proper football was a work in progress that needed time and patience. I also acknowledged that you can only lose so often before you have to go. He did and he did.

Happily, the quest goes on under Cloughy. His instinct and experience will ensure that our transformation into a proper football team is achieved at a steadier pace, but he will get there. I'm sure of that.

Personally i favour the somewhat out of style and much maligned 3-5-2, but it does mean having 2 fast and fit wide men who can make seamless transitions between defend and attack quickly. Which we don't really have. I hate 1 up front, really hate it. Strike partnerships open teams and win games. Unless you have world class midfielders, then one up front is always likely to be a struggle to score enough goals.

Principles.
See this comment is like a statement of some purist way to play football and is some kind of patronising comment that 'Pinchy knows best'. There are many ways to play attractive football and if you wish to stay in league 1 and play the M K way then move there.

I only know one way. Pass the ball.

Oceania was at war with Eurasia. Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia....

Yes. They are entirely compatible. History shows that.

It's not easy to score when the other team has the ball.
So when you don't have the ball you cannot pass, therefore you are actually not playing football despite being on the same pitch as the other team with 11 players who have the ball at the same time during those 90 mins that has been declared a football match?

I told you........

Post 12.

Why are you so averse to the idea of your team passing the ball to each other? It is a feature diagnostic of Sheffield United fans and it's incomprehensible to me.
That does not answer my question at all and your attitude to those who question you is appallingly 'Nose in the air'.
Your attitude of assumption says much about you.
Did you watch Waterboy by any chance last night ?

No, I was reading El fútbol a sol y sombra by Eduardo Galeano whilst enjoying a pint of Pale Rider. Wasn't everyone?

"The ball laughs, radiant, in the air. He brings her down, puts her to sleep, showers her with compliments, dances with her, and seeing such things never before seen his admirers pity their unborn grandchildren who will never see them."

Eduardo wrote, of course, of Nick Montgomery.

you've been watching the keepy uppy trials again. Enjoy your world of clapping rapidly and giggling at the same time.

Nice to see Pinchy inventing another straw man to facilitate another non argument.

Pinchy, that champion of David Weir football. You just have to admire the cheek.

:-)

I shall do if my team win today. Is yours playing in Graves Park tomorrow morning?

Why do you not like the players to pass the ball to each other? You know, play football. Do you have an inferiority complex?

I know what you're doing. It may appear subtle to the S2 Hoofbillies, but I can see through it.

just pointing out that the winning football you've been preaching was executed by the poorest manager in our history.

Just saying like.

I love the revisionism that it's a myth that Pinchy was a great fan of Weir. By the end, he was like Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The last man standing after all Weir's other supporters had given up the ghost...

I'm a supporter of proper football. Why do you dislike attractive, skilful football do much? Is it just that you prefer the ugly things in life?

Pinter rather than Shakespeare? Hirst, not Da Vinci? Offal in preference to ambrosia?

It's rather sad, really.

Your proper football was exposed for what it is and the case is over;

Pinchy love's shite.
