Just looked up in Denis Clareborough's complete records book. We had a player called Ashley Fenwick who came on as sub at a pre season match at Skegness Town so it must be him. Couldnt find anything about him in google.

Not Ashley Fenwick, he's now a Physio at Wednesday.

Brian Smith front right and Cliff Powell next to Deano, didnt they both get serious injuries? Also simon webster at other side of deano. Remembet standing on the kop just behind the goal and he scored a header from edge of box...vs Huddersfield?

Am I right when I say Peter Duffield broke his leg while scoring a goal?

Assume it was Sunday afternoon because it was live on Sky? 😂
I don't think so, not sure that was a thing then?? I have a feeling Swindon played some of their games on a Sunday for some reason. I think we won 2 0 but I'm not Silent!!!!

It was a pre-Christmas game. Crowds would fall in December due to Christmas shopping so some teams moved games to Sunday (there was no Sunday trading then).

We won 2-0. The collision in which Duffield broke his leg resulted the first goal. It is recorded in FL records as a John Gittens own goal but some papers gave it to Duffield. Mark Morris scored the other goal.

I'm surprised Dempsey is in the pic. Bassett told him he didn't want him in the summer of 88 and he should find another club. He played a few reserve games at the start of 88-9 before going to Rotherham. Never a hint of a first team game, so surprising he went on pre season training.
Having had the chance previously to ask both Bassett and Dempsey about this previously my understanding is a little different. Harry wanted Demps to be his Dennis Wise of the team and play the same role that he did for Wimbledon, Demps being brought through the Man Utd juniors didnt fancy this and they mutually agreed he would move on. I believe before this decision was made that a new contract had been offered to Demps. It may well have been a decision that he went on to regret!
He's had his time though as a very successful coach and has always been highly regarded by Sir Alex and went back to old trafford when Solskear was appointed manager, he still remains there today having been the u21s manager last season. A top bloke who still has lots of time for us.

Fair enough. I took the story from the press at the time. Didn't know the background:)

These decisions always seem to.me strange on the players ' part. Joining Rotherham was obviously a step back in his career and he would have taken a wage cut. Do footballing principles really mean so much?
