Our new manager is.....

I don't know how many times, or to how many people I have to repeat this, but: History shows us the best way to win football matches and trophies. A cohesive team unit, comprising players of high levels of technique and skill (relative, of course, to the level at which they play), retaining clean possession of the football, passing accurately and creatively to each other, making intelligent off the ball runs so as to create space for forward movement, suffocating the other team's space when they have the ball, playing at an even tempo but with capacity for rapid changes of pace and direction.

That, as succinctly as I can put it, is proper football. It is light years away from the ragamuffin, shadow-chasing, Gerritintbox world of prehistoric S2. It owes nothing to Dave Bassett, or Charles Hughes, or Kevin Blackwell, or Mickey Adams or any other notable dinosaurs. It does not envisage numpties like Kozluk and Montgomery as it's players of the century. Anyone looking for Comedy Gold need look no further than that proposition.

That's what I'm on about. It is not funny; it is an absolute delight, by contrast to thoughtless, brainless, hopeless Hoof. It is your prerogative, and that of others, of course, to enjoy ale house football, in the comfort of your Bladey time warp.

As a matter of interest, which Tug-O-War team do you all support? I think we should have a poll.
The interesting statistic is that we have only had 2 periods of what can be described as success in the past 25 years,Dave Bassett and Neil Warnock, both alleged by Pinchy to be hoofball managers!!
None of the other so called 'proper football' managers have brought any sort of success eg Weir,Robson etc.
Enter Sir Tony Pulis............:)

Couldn't agree with you more. The problem is at our level you don't have the players who are capable and quick in mind enough to play that way. Even Swansea and Brighton mixed it up in this division on their way out.

You love hoof.

Pinchy....refer to my favourite manager in past 25 years poll on here.....enough said! :)
Passing around midfield and defence and pissing around don't win games and bring success, goals do.
As i have said before, attack is the best defence!

I don't give a toss what style we were playing if we were top of the league and getting promotion!

That, in typical Hoofer fashion, misses the obvious point: I hope this is the last weary time I have to repeat it:

History (with the odd exception, but nowhere near as many as Hoofers would like) shows that the way to be successful is to play proper, pass and move, football. For that reason (even if you haven't an aesthetic bone in your body) you should care very much what style we are playing. I can tell you that our directors care a great deal and much credit to them for that. There is, of course, a self-interest in their thinking because they want a successful club playing to full houses. Proper football will deliver that. Hoof will fail dismally - because it's archaic, mind-numbing rubbish.

OMG. If that is the only way to get out of this division then so be it but I did say "mix it up"
Twas a joke fella. However, pinchy will expect an explanation for the absurd notion to "mix it up".

:)

Straw man alert number 1001.

Oh, there are far too many to do that and I haven't the time or inclination to do a search. Perhaps someone who has will do so. Some are quite explicit, others reveal their perversions by calling for the appointment of Pulis or Morgan, or the return of Warnock or, even more absurdly, Bassett, be it as manager or Director of Hoofball. Yet others give themselves away by the ferocity, rapidity and sheer hostility of their responses to any contribution I make in favour of proper, attractive football.

I think you've just given the game away. In other words there aren't any for you to be able to give any examples.

For some strange reason you seem to feel compelled to invent an enemy to argue against.

Therefore we obviously didn't have hoof under Warnock, as we were playing in front of full houses.

Tried tug-o-war but its a straight best of three, no style marks given

Just seen Spurs go 2-0 up with a lovely goal. The ball was hopefully punted up front, the Villa defender headed it down, but Spurs pressed well, intercepted, and a couple of lovely passes played Soldado in to score.

Can someone tell me why the fact it arose from an initial hoof upfield detracts from the end result? Does AVB love hoof?

When Michael Brown scored THAT goal against Wendy, there were no passes leading up to that. It just fell to him from the defenders clearance and BANG. Pressman is still picking it out of the back of the net now.

Should he have brought it down and passed it around the edge of the box 78 times?

There's a time and a place for hitting it long I just don't want to see it for 90 minutes. Football needs to be 'mixed up'. The problem for Weir was that the players were unable to actually play football or wouldn't. Who knows he's gone now and to date we don't have a manager. Yesterday's match was crying out for someone to take it by the proverbial scruff of the neck and play some football to feet, then those clumsy Vale defenders would not have known what to do. If Warnock or Bassett were to return I won't be going again until they are replaced. Have you lot never heard the saying. 'Never Go Back'.

As did Jagielka's 30 yarder against Leeds in the league cup.

Yes I thought about that one aswell actually, and Tonge's second vs Liverpool.

Tonges first vs Liverpool came from a HOOF aswell.

Kabba's and Peschisolido's goals in the Forest playoffs were from long passes up field too. Horrible football to watch.

We actually mixed it up much more during the better spells of Warnock's time with us than a lot of people give us credit for. It's extremely lazy to label those days as simply hoofball.

That's a bit like saying Alf Ramsey, a 'shunt 'em on to the cinder track' full back, knew less about managing a football team, than Bobby Charlton, the darling of English football in the 50's & 60's. One went on to revolutionise how we played the game and won a world cup, the other failed at PNE!
Pinchy, you are fast becoming the Brian the Blade of this message board - Just a wind up wallah and sounding more ridiculous by the day!
Post of the week (I am talking about BOTH paragraphs). The book Jack and Bobby by Leo McKinstry is a very good read. It was said at Preston that Bobby Charlton found it difficult to understand why the players couldnt do things he could do. At one training session he got a group of players to watch him how to play a pass from one side to the other and it he delivered a pearl of a pass that had the players saying to each other "crickey, I cannot play a pass like that

I don't think many posters seriously believe Warnock will return, or that it would be desireable for him to do so. And Bassett's managerial career is clearly behind him.

However, those two are used as good examples of managers who set their sides up to play to the strengths of the players that were available to them and in a way that the players were comfortable with. In doing that, they were able to achieve a certain amount of success. Certainly, more success than any other managers that we've had during the last 38 years.

Weir did not do this and that is why we are at the wrong end of the table with relegation being a real possibility.

We should not get above our station. Good football is for the big boys. Now just kick that ball as far as you can.........good lad!

Now then, time for a bit of forelock-tugging.

You really do love alehouse football don't you? Up to now I half thought you (and others with a vestige of intelligence) were tongue-in-cheek in your advocacy of kick and rush. I was wrong. You really do favour football for the talentless.

Astonishing.

I just love having a good time on a Saturday [or whenever Sky think we should play].
That should include a few pints and attempting to batter some poor football team at BDTBL

Thank you for such a well thought out and constructive post. A valuable contribution to the discussion.

Perhaps you could list the posts where people have expressed those views.

No, thought not. Another fictitious enemy with whom to argue. Another distortion of reality.
