Those 60 appearances are spread over 7 seasons- 2 of which were severely disrupted by significant injury
Subsequent 5 seasons he got selected around a dozen times each.
Afore spell at WBA had a (loan) spell in Portugal where he played regularly (>30 games / 1 goal)
Smeltic supporters of my acquaintance state
“He's not part of the plans he's had more chances than anyone l can remember did well at West Brom last season, seemingly Burnley have got him”

Appears to have ‘proved’ himself at our (current) level although whether he (along with others ?!?) can make the step up if (when?) promoted is another matter
As you say, appears a reasonable ‘punt’ - If we pay a reasonable (<£1m?) & he contributes to promotion would be a decent buy & even if not up to scratch for PL we could / would likely be able to recoup outlay
Certainly a better option that the lad @ Posh
He's proven at west brom though, albeit only for half a season. Realistically he's probably one of the best we could get on a permanent.

The other option we know of is the lad from Brighton who looks very good too but his outcomes weren't as high as Johnston and I suspect that Johnston is nearer his peak than Sarnimento.

I haven't seen any of Mikey Johnston other than YouTube bits, but my inclination would be towards Jeremy Sarmiento if it's between the two.
Johnston is 25 and hasn't done much in the game.

Sarmiento was picked up by Brighton's great scouting network having been with Benfica for a few years. He had an impressive loan spell with Ipswich and has just turned 22. Feels like there's more potential upside in a permanent for him.

I saw him v Leicester away on tv

I was really impressed - he really ripped into LC that day .

If it’s the same guy and he can repeat that - then welcome aboard

But can he ?

Glenn little was very tall for a winger and wasn't bad either on other end of the spectrum. Can see why it would be nice to have a tall winger, coming in to meet any deep crosses lol.
Who was the tall (ish) winger we had in Warnock days - ex Millwall?

I'm the opposite. I feel like we've got enough players in their early 20's already so would welcome someone slightly older. I think Johnston has a bit of bite and shithousery about him as well which tends to go down well round these parts.

He scored 7 in 20 at the level we are spending at least a season at.. what more do you want??
Brewster did well on loan at our level for a time.
Maybe he'd turn out to be a later bloomer but he's done very little in the game for a 25 year old.

Says 2026 on here though? I read it elsewhere that's he's under contract to 2026 too.

I stand corrected - apologies
On reflection I should have recognised a (routinely drunken) Smeltic supporter is no source at all - I’m guessing my subsequent post referencing MJ’s abilities is likely to be tosh ‘n’all !😉

Half a season ....................bit like Brewster proving himself at Swansea for half a season then?

Johnston won't cost £20m in fairness! Also Brewster had only played that loan spell at Swansea pretty much so was still very inexperienced.

Absolutely no need for a winger to be tall. None whatsoever

Exactly Nathan Dyer was tiny and a brilliant little player.
If we sign Johnston, sell Souza and Moore gets injured, we may find ourselves with something like:

- - - - - - - - - Murphy - - - - - - - - -
Shackleton Souttar Robinson Burrows
- - - - - - Hamer Arblaster - - - - - - -
JRS- - - - - - -O'Hare - - Johnston
- - - - - - - - Brewster - - - - - - - - -

Decent team, but I think that's one six footer among the outfield players. So Johnston, or a Dyer, at left wing wouldn't be a problem in itself. But the above line up may not be able to cope against physical teams.

To solve it Wilder may decide to put Gilchrist at RB or Trusty at LB. Or feel forced to put a Johnny Ertl for Hamer in midfield. Maybe not disastrous, but if those mentioned have been in great form, forming amazing partnerships with the players around them, breaking that up is not really what you want to do.

Got any 6 foot 3 wingers in mind then?

I quite liked Ifill.

A few years earlier but David White was also pretty big if memory serves. Had a good half season before getting injured I think. Looked more like a rugby union wing than a footballer.
I rated David White he had real pace
