Every morning I run as I’m 72 and need to stay in shape.

Invariably as I run, I ruin my day by thinking logically about SUFC.

Logic! Is that the problem with today’s football?

When I was playing, it was about attacking and winning the game… no overthinking, no stupid formations, just build your team around the concept of attack, closing down, dominating midfield, and certainly no playing from the back down the middle of the park.

So, how about this season, we simply forget the numerous stupid formations and methodologies, and just go out there and play football the way it was designed… attack, score, command midfield, and win games….

Yep, it does get convoluted doesn't it?

Something I thought about last night was one of Bassetts gripes when we were on our way up and he used to complain we weren't ruthless enough at times, yesterday at 2 nil we should have gone for the throat and shown no mercy.

We are not the caliber of the "one nil to the Arsenal". You go two up early, you go for a third and a fourth etc. First goal yesterday was a high press, goal, second a break away, goal. Repeat and fkin rinse. No sit back, hoofball whatever. If the players aren't doing what the gaffer wants, call me crazy, sub them off. 😤

I suspect when toledo and I first watched football, teams had a goalkeeper, 2 full backs, 3 half backs, a centre forward, 2 inside forwards, 2 wingers and no substitutes. Our teams started playing European teams and we realised there were different ways of playing , with different formations. In 1966 wasn't Alf Ramsey castigated for playing without wingers - 'the wingless wonders'? I think Beckenbauer played as a sweeper for W Germany - possibly more of a deep lying midfield player in modern terms.
I suppose the different formations had to be countered. It was always 4 4 2 or 4 3 3 with overlapping full backs and somewhere along the line it developed into stopping the other team playing. When CW and AK came up with 3 at the back, it didn't take long for other teams to counter it - but it was great while it lasted.
It would be quite nice to go back to just attacking and trying to win but I'm afraid that's a bit of a pipedream now

How - when they changed formation they took control of the game - we tried hoof as we were pegged back for 30 minutes that didn’t work
Which then leaves the option change the shape tactics players going back to being convoluted like the opposition did

Build your formation and tactics around what each player does best and stop trying to make players change the way they instinctively play to suit your formation and tactics. It's what the best managers excel at. It's that simple.
