CONFIRMED Will Osula sold to Newcastle United

I think Osula has looked sharp and improved in this pre-season, and always looks good in the 23s (though even there he's also been wasteful when I've watched him).

He's also mostly looked very average whenever he's played league football for us and Derby.

10 million is a sound offer for what Osula's proved to be so far. It's surely more likely 10 million ends up being a good deal for us rather than Newcastle. I'm not sure he has the ceiling some tout, though he could definitely end up being a good striker.

I feel similar. I'm not sure how they arrived at their 10 million pound valuation. He could go on to be a proven Premier League striker, but I have seen precious little to suggest that so far.. Obviously, Newcastle are in a position to gamble, but personally, I would be inclined to accept this, given BBD is apparently going for 7 million.

Can I just add the lad is 20-21 so those quoting stats 4 years ago are referring to a child. I remember moyes offered us 750k for jags before he broke properly into the team should we have taken that?

No but with all due respect 750k isn't 10millon.

750k in 2000 wasn’t the same as 750k now either
Of course not but I'd imagine it's still a big difference. If there's any other option I'd rather keep him but if its the difference between signing a few players who improve the first 11 or not doing then I'd go for selling him myself.

What about Jordan Slew should we have held on to him when Blackburn offered £1.2m?

£10m is worth more to us right now than Osula likely will be worth to us this season.

If his sale allows us to unlock numerous other deals (Cooper, Worrall, Millar etc.) then we have to consider it for the balance of the team.
Osula might be worth £25m in a year's time, he might be no further along. He's had a lot of chances for us and has yet to produce. I agree he has the raw attributes but I don't think we can gamble our transfer window on him coming good.

The money won’t be re-injected but if so sell Souza

I’m genuinely missing the punchline here?
You’re really going to have to pay more attention,
Repeat after me:-
Sheffield United routinely & habitually sell (invaluable) playing assets for a pittance (booooooo !!!!)
Sheffield United routinely & habitually purchase (inept) playing assets for extortionate amounts inversely proportionate to their value / worth (boooooo !!!)

Todays homework, Informed by re your recent learning:
With specific reference to the above ‘business model’ explain how the owner(s) of Sheffield United Football Club are able to generate vast personal wealth (in common parlance ‘trousering PL payments) whilst simultaneously pursuing such a profligate employment strategy (colloquially referred to as ‘signing over the hill crocked shite’)
nb
Casual racism is permitted and reference to the club’s Chief Executive involving reptilian analogies will garner addition marks.

Personally IF the sale of Osula is to fund the bringing of new players to BDTBL, means that PA is staying put. I doubt that the supposed new owners wouldn't sanction this transfer.

I tend to think new owners could also sanction the transfer. They may just see it as good value for a player who is yet to lock down a starting position.

As said previously, I would like him to stay but new owners may be just as likely to sell as the Prince.

It equates to £1.5m
I’m not just talking about the inflation since then. That’s been far outstripped by the rise in transfer fees across the board, so you can’t just equate amount X in 2000 to amount X in 2024, even if you apply standard inflation to it

Fair point

Hello Stegosaurus here

More evidence that we need to flog Osula. Wednesday have been told it will cost 4 million to get Ike Ugbo. That would still potentially leave us with some extra millions to get a decent goalie or a defender in. So much for the posters saying we couldn't sign better for 10 million lol.

Wilder would be a FOOL to turn 10 million down. Ugbo is a proven Championship quality striker and much better than Osula. Him and Moore would be a good strike partnership.

Proven is a bit of stretch. He's nearly 26 years old and has only scored 12 goals at this level.

Hypothetical question Would you sell Osula if the money was used to buy BBD?

I’d hold out for more then, his contract isn’t even a threat at the end of next season and we don’t need to get desperate until after that, if they want him they need to pay.

Unless we really need £10m now, in that case ‘a bird in the hand’ and all that.

I agree we can push Newcastle for more or at least a lot more in add-ons.

It's funny I was thinking back to that era too when Michael Tonge was one of the hottest prospects outside of the Premier League, with Liverpool rumoured to be sniffing round for £3M soon after we beat them in the Coca Cola semi final.

If we'd taken that offer, had it materialised, I think we'd have been pretty upset given Tonge's potential. However, he never did realise it, making what, 30 Premier League appearances compared to Jermaine Jenas who he was meant to be on a par with at that age making about 275. In hindsight, taking the £3M and investing it in the 'triple assault' team may have been the prudent move.

I do think that given our current circumstances and situation then we need to focus on recruiting 'very good' players rather than hoping that a player we have may end up being 'great'. When we have enough very good players we can then afford to see if a player can become great, but now it feels like £10M helps a lot right now which Osula may not

If its £10m I would definitely be tempted as long as there add ons and very good sell on clause and the money is re invested

If we hold onto Osula and he doesnt improve we would regret not selling him
If he does go on to be more like DCL we have that bit of insurance of sell on fee / addons

He’s not though is he- plays well and scores for his new team for 8 or so games then fades. Did exactly same at Cardiff and the Fowls. No way he’s worth 4.5 mill, and no way pigs can afford anywhere near that- they’re skint

Nice balanced post. I agree. I know the nature of any forum tends towards extreme views but honestly I see this as a practical 50-50 call. I completely understand people wanting to keep him, he looks like a real prospect and I love seeing a home-grown lad make it with us. But, right now, 10m would be transformative for our squad.

If we keep him I’m happy. But if I was playing poker I would fold on this one.

I don't think that's even close to transformative money at this level anymore. The first thing you'd have to do is replace him. We don't want a squad full of loans replacing permanents - especially with our deficit of players and need for permanent signings. We need four or five permanents. The right full backs, centre backs, wingers/strikers

Job one: replace Osula with a permanent, top Championship level striker who would be an upgrade this season. Ideally young enough with development potential that allows him to be a saleable asset in the future.

Job two: Use any money left over to sign permanent signing in other positions.

If you don't bring permanents in and spend it all on loans you'll have nothing to sell next year if we don't go up. Big trouble.

I think you'd maybe get the striker. BBD, for example, is 7 million plus sizeable wages. That's almost the whole Osula fee gone.
