I think billy should carry on playing as long as he wants and is able to, there is no disgrace moving down the leagues. If i was him and still had the will id be playing non league / sunday football until it was impossible not to why should he quit when its the thing he loves doing.
This is coming from a pensioner who is playing walking / running football 3 times a week and will continue to do it until it becomes impossible, the love of the game is too strong, so billy keep playing

It depends on the love of the game for Billy he doesn’t need to prove himself as a footballer. He has scored in the Premier League has been the number 1 striker in his generation in the football league and even had a time albeit brief spell in the MLS. If he still has the legs for it I think he could even drop down from League 2 level like Jon Stead did. He went to the then National League Harrogate Town and they got promoted. Most if not all of the National league are full time. A spell at somewhere like Halifax could be a good move

Billy will have a choice of clubs if he continues to play! Not ready to retire yet I would think.

IMHO it's great that he wants to keep on playing - he obviously still has the hunger to do so.

What it does show though, with his very limited contribution at Hull, is that PH / Utd were right not to offer him a contract last season.

I'm surprised he wasn't offered a contract in the MSL, especially after his decent showing at LA. That's where I'd head if I were him - far better than having to face Carlisle or Barrow away on a wet, freezing Tues night.

Absolutely nothing embarrassing at all about earning a good wage for your family while doing something you love.

It’s not fucking embarrassing when Gary Cahill plays footy with the dads from his kids school either or when you see premier league veterans playing Sunday league. It’s brilliant for people who have made so much from the game to want to carry on playing it just for the love of the sport.

Everyone gets older that can’t be helped but I’d say it’s far more refreshing to see people carry on playing football than those toxic wankers who’ve come out and admitted they hated football and did it for the money.

Saw Billy coaching some kids at the Woodburn road football site (formally pitz) the other week while I was there playing and he looked lean and as passionate as ever.

Why does that make them 'toxic wankers' exactly? Why should football be any different to any other job? Many people hate their jobs and only do it for the money - it doesn't make them 'toxic wankers' anymore than the footballers who feel the same way. I'd imagine there are many footballers who only see it as a 'job' and don't care for football outside of it - that makes them no different to most other people in society.

Hull wasn’t a great move for him. Probably no longer up to the rigours of Championship football. No goals in 11 appearances.

He’s nothing to prove to anyone. One of the great goal scorers of this millennium. Nor will he get any significant payday anymore. So little point chasing that.

If he wants to keep playing he should do what Didzy did and go play lower league football and score some goals.

Someone local, Doncaster, Bradford, Chesterfield or even Scunthorpe could be great moves for him if he wants to play for the love of the game, bag a few and not have to travel.

Nothing embarrassing about his move to Doncaster Rovers at all. It certainly won’t be wage motivated as he will be undoubtedly be set for life money wise. Good luck to him and hope he comes back soon in a coaching role.

It's precisely the opposite to embarrassing. Playing professional football, particularly in an outfield position, at age 38, is a phenomenal achievement. Somebody still thinks he's good enough to pay him good money to play for them. It's a meritocracy and he' still getting deals. For the hard of thinking... that can never be embarrassing. The most honorable route to retirement comes naturally: nobody will pay you anymore or your body let's you down. Or they wont turn up to watch you. Paul Mccartney sold his tour out in a minute the other day, and Andy Murray was in the top 40 tennis player in the world, at 36, with one hip for the last seven years. Their opposition have failed to retire them too. If they had forced them off the stage they'd already be long gone. I hope Bill makes it to 40.

In two years time, this thread will still be ongoing talking about Billy Sharp signing for Brackley Town in National League North

Oh, and Stegosaurus here

Not even hiding it now. Do trot-ter on.
I'm a born Blade. Billy is a chav. Doncaster is chavvy. If it wasn't for football he would be having a breakfast infront of the fruit machine at a Spoons.
