I'd have to question BBD's career ambitions if he dropped down to the Championship to join us, irrespective of how we do next season. He's proven himself to be capable of playing in the Premier League and that's where he should aim to be next season. He has nothing to gain from coming back to the Championship.

We should be doing all we can to get him. Didn’t look out of place in the Premier League.
Therein lies the problem I would imagine. He put himself in the shop window for a move if he can’t get back into the side at Villarreal. He would get in the squad of all the promoted teams and probably 2 or 3 others in the bottom half.

Another season with us, and I think we'd not be far off promotion.
He'd be a top earner, but bloody worth it.

To be honest I don't want us to go back up again next season without some serious investment into the first team. We have come down with a team weaker than the one that took us up and the word from Wilder is free agents and loans only, other than some small fees, unless we sell first. We will likely still be as weak at the start of the season.

We'd be humiliated again if we went up and likely just as crap, if not worse than last season.

Why bother?

I'd rather spend the next 4-5 years in the Championship team picking up 2-3 young, quality players each season who we can coach and develop or sell on for larger fees than we paid for them, and reinvest that money in a replacement and strengthen another starting place with a quality player.

Yes, it will take time and patience, but that's far better than a third season in a row of being beaten by everyone. I can't stomach the idea of losing 9-1 again on aggregate to the team in 19th, who were arguably as bad as us, and battered us in our own back yard.

Balls to promotion and balls to the Premier League. Balls to short term fixes.

Good business if we could get him. Did fine in the prem, would be great in the champ. So if we were to go back up he’d hack it. We’ve too many players who can’t bridge the quality gap between the two divisions, he can

People pouring cold water on a player choosing to commit to a team way below his abilities just because his family might be settled are forgetting a certain M. Lowe.

Aye
Except that that “certain M Lowe” has committed to a team commensurate with his “abilities” - both are absolutely shite

I hate all this "ambition" crap. He'll be paid a ridiculous amount no matter where he goes, whether it's 15k pw here or 30k pw at Southampton, it's still an insane amount of money.

If he felt settled here and his family was happy, plus he'll be playing in a club that will (hopefully) be battling at the top instead of being dry bummed at the bottom, surely happiness>ambition?

£15k per week is £780,000 a year. Would you turn down an extra £780,000 to stay in the Championship, then you could earn £1.6mil playing in the Premier League, which you know and have proven yourself good enough to do? It makes no sense.

Who says Brereton-Diaz won't enjoy himself at Southampton? He seemed to enjoy playing for us, even though we were a shambolic shower of shit.

If he plays a full season for Southampton and performs as well for them as he did for us, then a mid-table team would likely buy him the following season. So it's a win/win for him.

Everyone has ambition and footballers only have a limited career. Why would you waste your career playing in the Championship when you know you're good enough to play in the Premier League?

Sheffield must be great if Ben and his family only arrived in January and already settled in.

Where has the suggestion come from that we might only be prepared to offer BBD £780k per year ?

According to Spotrac , in his time with us last season we paid him the equivalent of £1.82 million making him our joint highest earner along with , er………… Brewster .

Next in line came Angel , Archer , Hamer , Souza and Tom Davies all on £1.56 mill. Even Ben Osborn received in excess of £1 mill .

If the reported asking price of £6 million is true (roughly a third of what we paid for McBurnie and a quarter of Brewster’s fee) and given the impact he had on our attacking play , then not to at least make every effort to sign him and pay him at least what the latter is earning would go down in my book as one of our club’s greatest missed opportunities .

You may not be surprised to hear that I have witnessed quite a few of those ……..

Whilst I agree with what your saying.

Who's to say if we did manage to go up again swiftly that the resources would be the same?
We could be taken over now, or it could end up during the season or next summer. And the pot we fish in is different.

That's the biggest issue at the moment. IF we get taken over, and IF the new owners make good funds available.

BBD would be a great sign of intent from the new owners. Don't see him coming to us, but I hope he does. He and Osula would, could, be an awesome front two in the Championship. And, in the Premier League if we get back . I dream!!!!

First O'Hare, then David Brooks, now this...

STOP GIVING ME HOPE
Don’t get too excited mate, just a message from a friend who has never given me any info before. Thought it would be worth asking 😂

this is more very interesting news and think theres an outside chance we could get him he seemed to like his time at the lane last season and even more indication that new owners nearly here and were offering bigger salaries

If this takeover goes through I wouldn't be surprised if we got him back, assuming the rumours that he loved his time here are true. He certainly fit in well and was one of the few bright sparks from last season.

The story that he loved his time with us is not just a rumour - he is on record as having said so .

As you say , his appearances for us last season were among the very few positives that supporters experienced and if we could bring him back , he alone in my opinion could make the difference between us struggling to avoid relegation and challenging for the top six .

A proper player and one I would love us to sign.
