Our wage bill was apparently ten times that of Oxford United, who have made the playoffs in League One. It was also one tenth of that of Manchester City, who play in the same division we are expected to be competitive in. The ”huge” amounts of money given to us, Burnley and Luton pale into insignificance compared with the money the established Premier League teams are spending, and vanish like smoke in the wind compared to the vast amounts hosed around by higher teams like Man City and the like.
The fact that we’ve all got relegated shows the vast gulf in finances between the moneyed clubs and the hopeful optimists like us. You’ve got clubs owned by dodgy billionaires, rapacious hedge funds, and oil rich sportswashing countries with dodgier human rights than Mordor all spending vast swathes of cash that make us look like church mice.
Admittedly we’ve not made the best fist of it this season, but when you’ve got teams that can bring five established internationals on as substitutes and we’ve got the likes of Sam Curtis brought on for his debut, and Rhian Brewster coming on to try and avoid getting injured for fifteen minutes and you start to think it might not be a level playing field.
