I don't know about the "...to watch football?" bit. Sheffield is a miserable place; it was when I was a kid and it's got worse since. The football clubs are a perfect reflection of the state of the city.
It's the downtrodden, "muck n' nettles" attitude that seems to be hard-boiled into folk like it's coded into their DNA. It's tedious and I was desperate to escape it.I think what doesn't help is the continuous comments from loads of Sheffielders who support United and Wednesday
"We don't want to play in the PL because it's corrupt and we have no chance"
"So would much prefer to be in the Championship, that's proper football/ proper fans and more our level".
You even see comments like "would hate to be like Man City....it's just not us"
and "if we ever moved to a fancy stadium like the Spurs stadium I'd stop going"
Sheffielders prefer cheapness (best value) over quality in almost everything.
Often wondered if the above are the reason that put off anyone with ambition buying either Sheffield club.
It's because they don't believe the Sheffield fans have the same ambition to match there's.

City councils as opposed to village idiotsIn terms of attracting investment and vision, it’s annoying but understandable how we have dropped behind all these London satellite towns in the south east, given how much they dominate the economy over the last ~30 years.
But I can’t really fathom why Sheffield has also lost out to the likes of Leicester, Burnley, Leeds, Wolverhampton, Stoke, Newcastle, Nottingham, Birmingham… why have they all got big investment? what do they have that Sheffield doesn’t???
Both would rather die than merge - of all the progressive things that the clubs and the Council continually fail to do , that is top of the list. How long will it be before the clubs are merged if they both become unsustainable in the future ?

Bang on.Sheffield has always been shite at attracting investment, status of a City but run as a small town.![]()
Bang on.
In our case , look at what the Council did to Brearley when he wanted to create a super stadium at the Lane
The council have always been more sympathetic to our neighbours, no airport, no electric rail network even the tram routes are shit.Often used as a stick to beat the Council with, but knowing how things ended up with Reg, I don't think it would have been that 'super'.
He used to say it was because of his politics, but the way things ended must make people question how likely, real development ever was.
The Council deserve plenty of shit, but not for this.
The perennial reminder that Brealey appealed to.the Tory government against thr Council s decision and the government backed the council.Often used as a stick to beat the Council with, but knowing how things ended up with Reg, I don't think it would have been that 'super'.

So am I.I’m glad you did.
I’m well aware.You’re not missed.
I was referring to the wider Sheffield populace, but as both clubs reflect the plight of the city so well, it’s hard to differentiate. The “stop pissin’ abaht, lump it forrad” brigade have such low expectations and it’ll never changei dont think its a muck and nettles attitude more a ' its the blades way ' attitude
completely ignoring anything positive that has ever happened and always expecting the worst
real losers mentality must rub off on the players and its only when we get strong characters in who are the antithesis of this that they drag the club along with them including its simpering lick spittle fan base
I reckon it’s Glasgow. You’ve got all that sectarian rage projected onto what is basically pub football.

“Special”? Like the kid down the street that’s called “special” because he didn’t stop pissing the bed until he was twelve?Nowt wrong we Sheffield it’s special
