Managerial failings once more..

I said the same. Consensus seems to be to bring on 4 or 5 players to give fresh impetus going into the final 20 (which these days is nearer 30).

We dont. More accurately Hecky doesn't. He seems behind the curve with that. Considering how many late goals we've conceded, I'm amazed we keep making the same mistakes...

Firstly, I'm gutted that we didn't pick up three points there.. Not just because we desperatlely need them. But because it would have been a fitting tribute to Ains after the devastating news broke on here yesterday. Once more, my thoughts are with all connected to Matt. Rest well blade!

After the above it seems lame to have a whinge to be honest. I said it last night and I say it again, life itself it greater than football.

Going back to today's game however, it is hard not to feel underwhelmed by the gaffer again.

Asaba hit the nail on the head it terms of how we are setting up. We are playing players out of position and not to their individual strengths? Why?... I don't understand the team selections or the way that we set ourselves up.....What is the thought process behind it all?

Secondly, my biggest annoyance with Hecky.... Substitutions... And today being another glowing example of how inept we are at rolling the dice and making positive tactical changes.

Brighton have a player sent off and instantly their gaffer acknowledges that they will have to work a lot harder, therefore he intrduces fresh legs to keep the tempo up. Us on the other hand.... after weathering the first half and looking a little bit sluggish in areas, we persevere and don't change anything up.... Why?

It is surely no coincidence that we concede so many goals later in games. We burn our players out and fail to act on the tactical changes that the opposition make. Granted, we are up against luxury sqauds week in, week out... But never the less we don't do anything to try and counter the sudden influx of energy from opponents. With teams making 5 changes, they can literally rip tired legs apart and expose all of our weaknesses...

Perhaps it's also no conincidence that our injury record is appalling still.. Granted you can't place the blame solely on the mabager for that one... but surely tactical substitutions would aid in protecting our players a little bit?..... When it is obvious that certain players are blowing out of their backsides, then you change it up and remove them from the pitch... Why do we persevere?... Players are no longer able to track back and at times they look disinterested in receiving the ball as they simple don't have the energy levels.

I'm no football manager, but for me the failings are quite obvious.... Whilst it's a point gained, for me it is definitely 2 points lost through negativity.
Agreed re. Subs.

Every game on 55 or 60 minutes we should be switching 2 out of our 3 midfielders in a double sub. Two of Slimane, Osborn* and Fleck** should come on. Ideally we would have Davies and Arblaster for those roles too.

What’s more we should have these subs planned before the game, so the players coming off know to empty their tanks and keep intensity up before they come off.

* unlike some, i don’t have a problem with using Osborn, - he shouldn’t be our only option for changing games, but fine if coming on with slimane to add legs

** fleck’s days as a PL starter are long gone, but surely he could give 30 mins or so at decent intensity? Better than a knackered/cramping up Hamer, which cost us a last minute equaliser last week. 5 subs means there’s now a role in squads for guys who can’t do 90 (or even 45) mins.

We’ve got to get better at using the 5 subs - yes it favours bigger teams but we aren’t even trying to use it really - as a team that struggles on athleticism and stamina it can be an advantage to us but we aren’t getting the most out of even our thin squad.

The only player out of position was Baldock as far as I can see? Isn't the thought process behind that obvious? We are a back 3 team and he's the only other option to play RCB.

Brighton have players on their bench that are normally starters - João Pedro, Mitoma, Veltman all proven PL players. The young lad they brought on to bring fresh legs into midfield was dreadful and could've cost them the game.

We have fuck all on our bench, presumably everyone now accepts that these players are at least a level below PL standard. Fleck is the only player on that bench who has played to a PL standard and that was long ago. Who do you think should be coming on in these games, and who should they be replacing?

Let’s save these for when it happens against us. I will be kicking off saying it’s not a red. You lot better be the same.

Blah Blah Blah .....Great point, enough said . utb

I'd argue two or three set of fresh legs would stop us consistently sitting deep in the last 20 mins.

The last two games have been slightly different, but still with a bit more energy and dynamism in the final third, we might have gotten more out of them.

Don’t you agree with them being fortunate goals? Were papering over the cracks
We're not papering over any cracks.

Most of us know that our players aren't good enough for the Premier League.

That's not their fault and all we can ask is that they give everything in every game and pick up points when they can.

The same goes for the manager, it wouldn't matter what subs he made the players still wouldn't be good enough, and anyone that thinks we can compete by bringing kids and inexperienced players on is living in cloud cuckoo land.

The last two games have yielded four points from two teams with much better players than us so I simply say well done to all involved.

On Souza's back injury, how the heck wasn't that a penalty? Defender lifts his knee and launches himself into the back of him as he's going to head it.
No Var review check despite him being down injured for quite some time. Would we get away with that at the other end? Unlikely.

He even lifts his knee to connect with his back as well. I just think if that's us VAR gives a pen for that.

They just assume its nothing due to the pace he is going at for the header.

It’s like we want to concede late goals

Late in games generally, when better players are fucked anyway then don't fresh legs trump standard ability?

Surely an argument they do, as the starting XI tanks go past empty?

We've conceded quite a few through pure lack of energy to compete
There's an argument for it definitely, I just assume Hecky would like to and doesn't because of the quality of his options.

Upfront Archer might want replacing, but he's been clinical this season. You bring him off for Traore or Osula and they miss a good chance and suddenly it's the wrong decision.

Osborn and Fleck aren't match fit, Slimani is clearly miles off the level required etc.

I'd have brought Larouci on towards the end myself, but perhaps the same is true there.

Amen to that!

Would you be asking the same questions IF Bungle had put the chance away near the end and we'd come away with 3pts ?

No......a one off result should be irrelevant.

I know managers are judged on results but I think we should be judged on a long spell of performances.
I'm a bit on the fence at the minute , but think our performances have been pretty atrocious, and they were often not convincing last season too

but you can't argue with results. We stole loads of results last season.
Can't be down to good luck because we regularly defended in numbers for the last 20 minutes of most matches and always seemed to hold on.

We've gained 4 points from our last 2 matches...so don't mind givng Hecky longer but I'm pretty conifident it will end in tears and he'll be gone by Xmas if not earlier. The issue for me is I don't see much structure of building blocks for the future.

However what muddies the waters is we need to take into account that Hecky has been dealt a difficult hand so he faces a difficult job.
However think the approach is always damage limitation and always worrying about stopping the opposition.
At some point we need to think about and devise tactics about what we plan to do when we have the ball.
