Getting big 'isn't happening' vibes from these latest updates.

Surely other irons in the fire, you'd hope.

His stats last year for Boro are almost identical to Brewster's at Swansea, before we signed him.

It's frightening to think that we may end up with a similar quality player, even for "only" £15M.
Brewster is a complete and utter anomaly

We signed Brester for £23m and he wasn’t proven at any level but Yoooofffff teams.

Prices have gone up in every aspect of life and not as much as in football, thanks Saudis. We are just in a time warp thinking we can buck the market, someone will step in from ‘t championship and pay it, maybe Leeds.

If we are that skint stop spending, accept the inevitable, go with what we’ve got and develop our Yooffs int PL but please stop embarrassing the club by showing how poorly we are run.

Cheers, yeh can’t claim we missed out on that, could have afforded that, clearly didn’t want too

Now looking like we won’t afford Archer either

We could easily afford 12 million for Akpom.
However the transfer fee is only half the equation.

The rest of the equation, which many of out fans never really consider is the salary
but more importantly the "relegation clause" and length of contract.
Common sense says any promoted club has a good chance of instant relegation, so when we're negotiating salaries.
It's not the set salary that matters, most players are looking at the drop in wage figure if and when we're relegated.

No way can we afford a no relegation clause, it's obvious really because it could lead to probably FFP issues, with points deductions and possibly admin.
Also if you accept the reports that he was given a 5 year contract, then basically Akpom has secured his future.
There's no way we would commit ourselves to such a lengthy commitment.

Imagine if we're relegated and a new owner comes in.
He'll think who ever gave Akpom a massive contract with no relegation clause was total madness.
Especially if he's ordinary again this season, all Blades would be saying "you only have to look at Wikipedia to see he's a one season wonder, Bettis out".

You start low, but you don't start so pathetically low that the selling club thinks you're not even remotely serious

Have we insulted Villa and they’re now refusing to negotiate with us? If the answer is no, then I don’t see what the problem is

Can you show me the for sale advert for Archer? Is there a Playertrader website I’m unaware of?
Who enters into negotiations with a player without knowing the ball park asking price?
UTD: "We understand you're open to the idea of selling Archer, how much are you looking for?"
AV: "Sure, we'll allow you to talk to him, but the price is a secret - we're not telling you until you've agreed everything in principle with him."
We must've had a rough idea.
We are playing a dangerous game, and we're gonna end up with no-one or some fifth choice gamble.
Like it or not, £18m is the going rate. It's not like he'll have no resale value.
Sounds like we're penny pinching to me.

Every buying club bar Chelsea tries to get the best deal how is this news to you

So we’ve had two bids knocked back by Villa in the last 48 hours. Villa (the necky fuckers) have given us a few different prices depending on the type of deal to do with any buyback clause or no clause etc. Minimum is £18m.
A few different prices but minimum is 18m…. Close thread

At £18 million we should walk away and look at other options.

MagnifiqueShorehamStreet hit the nail on the head even though he was joking. At the sums we are prepared to pay to compete in the hardest most prestigious league in the world we will keep getting rejected. We will end up going that far down the list with low ball bids we will end up approaching LA Galaxy for Billy Sharp.

Not saying don’t negotiate but £8-10m is embarrassing. Go £14 as a start.

We are fucking about.
Established teams, and even those on the fringe like Fulham, could easily take a punt on him as a squad player at £18m. If it doesn't work out for them, so what? So we could easily miss out on him by fannying about.
I'm not suggesting we charge in with the full £18m, but at least offer something near like £14m and go from there. Not fucking £8m!!!

The market is what someone is willing to pay for him.

We’re bidding against Luton and maybe some Championship clubs, that should tell you that Archer ain’t worth what Villa are asking. That’s part of signing a player, knowing who else is interested and adapting your buying strategy to suit.

We're proper fucking tyre kickers aren't we.

By all means start lower but ffs. Like these clowns on under the sun who put an offer of 100 grand in on a property on the market at 150g's.

Not sure why we would pull out of a 12m deal for Akpom if its too much, only then to spend 18m+ on Archer.

Also re Che Adams, his release clause expired yesterday, so its pretty dumb to then bid for him....

There's always ways around any deal.....just need a bit of imagination.

Something like we'll pay you 12 million not 18 million
and if we stay up then we'll give you an extra 6 million, so they end up with their 18 million

or we'll give you 8 million from any future transfer, so Villa end up with 20 milion.

These are just a few quick examples of how Villa get at least £18 million using a little imagination.

Serious though why are we bothering sticking ridiculous bids in when it’s clear we can’t afford them, 10m below their asking price is just embarrassing.
